Chapter One: Awakening

Inside the dimly lit, cramped, low-ceilinged tent, a frail figure sobbed softly.

She seemed trapped in some terrible dream; cold sweat gathered on her forehead and then trickled down in a small stream.

With a heavy breath, she suddenly sat up in bed.

The straw used as bedding was blown up and scattered all over the ground.

When Ye Nianzhen woke up, her first feeling was that her head was throbbing as if it were about to explode.

A jumble of images swirled in her mind—sadness, anger, regret…

The intense emotional impact nearly stopped her heart.

These memories and emotions do not belong to her now, causing her to fall into confusion for a time.

The tent's special windproof material provides excellent sound insulation, preventing the noise of the raging wind and sand from getting in.

But Ye Nianzhen still caught the faint sounds of cursing mixed with the girl's soft sobs.

The crying touched a sensitive nerve in her, and her confused memories suddenly became clear.

An image of a short, thin girl with a round face who liked to wear braids came to mind.

Like peeling back layers of a cocoon, the girl's memories, from her laughter to the bewildered expression at the moment of her innocent death, played out like a slideshow.

Ye Nianzhen clenched her teeth, a hint of metallic sweetness oozing from her throat, which she then swallowed hard.

She understood that she had been reincarnated once again.

*

The experience of the last failure was so painful that I couldn't recover for a long time.

But now is not the time for a post-mortem analysis.

Ye Nianzhen stood up from the makeshift bed on the ground; the low tent forced her to hunch over as she moved forward.

She hadn't walked more than a few steps when she reached the tent door. She unzipped the door and opened it.

In an instant, the chaotic air, mixed with fine sand, rushed in. She dodged to the side and quickly closed the door.

The sky was overcast, with not a ray of sunlight peeking through the low-hanging dark clouds.

Dozens of makeshift tents were crammed together on the desolate land, but few people came out of them.

In such terrible weather, a girl was being pushed and shoved by several people, huddled small next to Ye Nianzhen's tent.

Her face, so dirty that its original color was obscured by tears, seemed to notice Ye Nianzhen and cast a pitiful glance in their direction.

Ye Nianzhen's heart trembled slightly.

The girl's name was Xiaochun, but no one knew her real name because she was an orphan that the base had taken in.

Like other children who did not awaken their special abilities, she was assigned to be a handyman at the base.

Xiaochun works hard without complaint, and always has a smile on her face.

Such laughter stung some people with dark intentions. They began to bully her, insult her, and even threatened to take advantage of her when she was a few years older.

This is Ye Nianzhen's fifth reincarnation in this world.

She knew the simplest and most concise way to deal with animals.

She conjured an iron rod out of thin air; the rod was gleaming white and sharpened at the tip.

When the scoundrels saw a thin figure with disheveled hair and a few straws on his head appear, they laughed indifferently.

But the next second, their smiles turned into fear.

Ye Nianzhen's iron rod struck one person's head fiercely, and the person passed out without even making a sound.

Then she spun the iron rod and pointed the pointed end at the leader.

Beneath her disheveled hair were a pair of bloodshot eyes, swirling with emotion, staring up at him.

The rogue has a minor superpower, which is why he has been on field missions.

He had seen the eyes of those who had actually killed people.

His legs went weak, and he collapsed to the ground.

Seeing this, the other thugs were intimidated by Ye Nianzhen's imposing aura, thinking she was some powerful superhuman, and they all ran away in a panic.

Ye Nianzhen helped the little girl up from the ground.

She seemed to still be in shock, glancing at Ye Nianzhen with a bewildered look.

Ye Nianzhen did not respond, but simply pulled her and walked straight to the person who was unconscious on the ground.

There is no friendship among scoundrels. When they fled, besides the leader who left behind a stench, they also left behind their unconscious "brothers".

Ye Nianzhen held Xiaochun's hand and gestured towards the person with her lips.

Xiaochun was puzzled, so Ye Nianzhen demonstrated: "Watch carefully."

Then he delivered a swift and powerful kick to the man's groin.

The little girl's mouth was agape like an egg.

Ye Nianzhen, completely oblivious to her shock, gestured coldly towards the person on the ground.

This time, the little girl understood what she meant.

She clenched her small fist, as if to encourage herself.

Ye Nianzhen just watched quietly.

Xiaochun stepped forward, as if she had made up her mind, raised her short leg, and kicked that spot with all her might.

Some non-existent cracking sounds—

This thing on the ground probably won't be able to "do" any living things anymore.

Congratulations!

Ye Nianzhen looked down at Xiaochun and showed her first smile since waking up.

Xiaochun happened to look up and see it, and couldn't help but feel warm inside.

A belated sense of joy welled up inside her, and she kicked the trash on the ground several more times.

"Alright, let's go back."

Ye Nianzhen's smile became more genuine as she pulled Xiaochun into the tent.

The outside air is harmful to the human body, and it is not advisable for Xiaochun, who has not yet awakened her supernatural abilities, to stay for too long.

Speaking of this, Ye Nianzhen asked Xiaochun, "Where's your mask?"

Although the base was dilapidated, everyone was still provided with a gas mask.

Xiaochun hesitated for a moment, then lowered her head and said honestly, "I'm not wearing it..."

The answer was somewhat unexpected: "Why?"

Xiaochun: "I heard them say... that it's easier to awaken your superpowers by being exposed to the outside environment more often."
