Chapter Twenty-Five: The Base

After hearing Luo Shui's embellished account of the whole story, Ye Nianzhen frowned in disapproval.

The search for healers was indeed urgent, but before that, she had a base that needed to be reorganized.

After Red Nitrate was defeated by them, they became the new leaders of the base.

So, before dawn, Ye Nianzhen drove her RV into the jungle and found the Red Nitrate Team camped there.

She climbed onto the roof of the car, with energy cannons positioned on either side of her, exuding a menacing aura.

She raised her voice and gave the order: "I am now in charge of Exploration Team One. Those who do not wish to follow, leave the team immediately. The rest of you, pack up and return to base!"

An uproar erupted below: "Where's the Red Team! And the two vice-captains!"

"Where did you put them?!"

Ye Nianzhen's voice was cold: "Dead. Do you understand?"

The riots subsided for a moment, then a new disturbance arose, only this time their voices were quieter and their attitudes more docile.

Indeed, some troublemakers disagreed with Ye Nianzhen, while others wouldn't admit defeat until they faced the consequences.

These people didn't dare to provoke them, but they all left cursing.

Ye Nianzhen ignored them and, after confirming that those who remained were relatively well-behaved, gave them half an hour to pack up.

Half an hour later, the convoy set off in formation, returning to base along the same road they had come from.

*

Inside the car, Luo Shui glanced at Ye Nianzhen somewhat guiltily.

"Well... actually I didn't kill him. That vice-captain might still be alive."

Ye Nianzhen observed the road conditions and replied perfunctorily, "Oh, I was just trying to scare them."

"Huh?" Luo Shui's mouth dropped open.

Ye Nianzhen: "Hong Xiao probably didn't die either. This is to keep those people in line."

Clap clap clap, Luo Shui applauded Ye Nianzhen's swift and decisive actions.

Mingyuan woke up at some point, propped himself up in bed, and joined the conversation.

"They're probably all dead over there."

His body was still very weak, but he still tilted his head back, trying to observe Ye Nianzhen's reaction through the reflection in the car window.

Ye Nianzhen saw Mingyuan's expression in the rearview mirror and guessed what he was worried about.

She pretended not to notice and said casually, "It's good that they're dead. They were all scum who brought disaster to the area."

Mingyuan's expression immediately relaxed, a slight smile curving his lips as he lay back down on the bed.

Luo Shui, however, began to hesitate: "Huh? Should I kill him too? What if he goes and harms other people?"

He disliked socializing and lived in seclusion after entering the apocalypse, and his hands had never been stained with the blood of his own kind.

However, if he had known beforehand that the other party was a bad person, he probably... wouldn't have shown any mercy.

Ye Nianzhen reassured her, "It's alright, good and evil will be rewarded accordingly."

Despite saying this, she was somewhat uncertain inside.

Does good and evil really have their consequences?

At least in this small world, it doesn't seem to be like that.

*

With each person having their own thoughts, the convoy quickly returned to the base.

Ye Nianzhen got out of the car and felt like she was coming home.

It was just a low tent and a dilapidated house.

A number of people were already waiting at the base gate, and they looked puzzled when they saw her coming down first.

Hehe, this is exactly what I've been waiting for.

Ye Nianzhen walked to the most conspicuous position, put her hands on her hips, and shouted.

"From this day forward, I am the master of this base!"

The expected uproar did not occur. Most people were indifferent or showed sarcasm, thinking that this crazy woman was up to her old tricks again.

Xiaochun burst out of the crowd and flew into Ye Nianzhen's arms like a bullet.

Ye Nianzhen ruffled the girl's hair, picked her up, and spun her around.

The child has been eating well and living comfortably lately, and has clearly gained some weight, with a fair and clean face.

"How have things been? Has anyone bullied you while your sister was away?"

Xiao Chun hugged Ye Nianzhen's neck and said happily, "No! Ever since those bad guys mysteriously disappeared, no one dares to mess with us anymore~"

The "we" in this context refers to some orphaned children without parents in the base, whom Ye Nianzhen sheltered under her wing.

"And..." Xiaochun whispered in Ye Nianzhen's ear, "I also know the special move my sister taught me!"

Ye Nianzhen gave the little girl a thumbs up.

In just a few days, Xiaochun is no longer the helpless child who would be bullied by others.

Ye Nianzhen put the person down, and just then, the other people in the car also got out.

Luo Shui helped Ming Yuan, and these two were familiar faces, but Qin Qiu and the young boy behind them were strangers. Xiao Chun looked a little timid and hid behind Ye Nianzhen.

Ye Nianzhen patted Xiaochun and whispered to her, "That older brother is shy, how about you take him to the base to get acquainted with him?"

A sense of responsibility welled up within Xiaochun, and she immediately straightened her back and stepped forward to take the boy's hand.

"Come on, little brother, I'll show you inside. From now on, we're family!"

Seeing this, the young boy actually looked embarrassed and silently followed.

Ye Nianzhen asked Qin Qiu to supervise the team members in organizing the supplies, while she took Mingyuan to the infirmary.

Luo Shui has long since disappeared; he's probably off enjoying some good food—that's all he cares about.

Upon arriving at the infirmary, the doctor who had treated the two last time was still there. He raised an eyebrow in disbelief when he saw them.

The doctor gave him a look that said, "It's you again." Mingyuan could only give a subtle smile, signaling the doctor to keep the previous incident a secret.

The doctor sighed, and after a thorough examination, concluded that the patient had "anemia," "malnutrition," "no serious external injuries," and "internal organ damage requiring rest."

Ye Nianzhen disapprovedly, crossing her arms: "Don't do it again."

Mingyuan smiled at her and said, "Okay."

This attitude clearly shows that she knows she is wrong but will not correct it. Ye Nianzhen moved closer to the person on the bed, almost forehead to forehead.

"No, for example! What do you think your teammates are for?"

Mingyuan was being pressed closer and closer, his body leaning back slightly. They were so close that they could hear each other's breaths.

He was too nervous to hear Ye Nianzhen's words clearly, and repeated like a parrot, "...What do you do?"

Ye Nianzhen suddenly straightened up and flicked Mingyuan on the forehead: "They are for relying on."

"Ouch!" Mingyuan rubbed his forehead, making a pitiful expression: "I know, I really know I was wrong."

Actually, I secretly breathed a sigh of relief, but after a while, I belatedly felt regret.

At such a close distance, is it possible to...?

Suddenly, a scene flashed by of Ye Nianzhen and the black dog embracing intimately, along with the gaze of the man in black towards Ye Nianzhen.

Gentle, focused, as if she were the only person in the world.

The fluttering heart and the pink, bubbly fantasies were all drowned in the boundless darkness.

Mingyuan's eyes dimmed.

Teammates... Yes, to Ye Nianzhen, they were all teammates on equal footing.

Even so, as long as I can stay by her side, help her, and protect her, that's enough.

The moon is always out of reach, but if you climb to the highest peak, the moon seems within reach.

Mingyuan was willing to be that foolish moon chaser, deceiving himself, and forever guarding the place closest to the moon.
