Chapter Six: Defense Line

Mingyuan was still immersed in the shock this scene brought him.

The "princess," her face covered in dirt, plunged her hand into the wolf's head, pulled something out, and tossed it to him.

"eat."

A familiar scene, familiar words.

Mingyuan nimbly caught the object, wiped away the bloodstains, and discovered it was a small crystal.

The crystals are translucent white, about the size of a date pit, and brimming with a gentle, nourishing power.

Ye Nianzhen: "This is a level one magic crystal. Eating it can enhance physical strength and is beneficial without any harm."

She then used her dagger to stir the brain matter of another zombie and picked out a similar crystal.

This time it was smaller, and it shattered during the battle.

“Look, zombies also have brains, but they won’t die unless we destroy them, so they can’t be used by us.”

Ye Nianzhen looked regretful, but Mingyuan felt fortunate.

Those are monsters turned humans; he doesn't want to eat the stuff that comes out of their brains!

After wiping the crystal on his clothes, Mingyuan mentally prepared himself before putting it in his mouth.

Surprisingly, this thing melted instantly upon entering the mouth, turning into a stream of pure energy that flowed into the body.

This feeling was familiar; Mingyuan recalled having a similar feeling when he killed the first mutated rat.

He raised this question.

Ye Nianzhen wasn't surprised: "Oh, is that so?"

"If the crystal is destroyed, the zombies and monsters will die on the spot."

"At the same time, the energy in the crystal dissipates and is absorbed to some extent by the surrounding organisms."

Ye Nianzhen rested her chin on her hand: "So the saying 'the more you fight, the stronger you become' is true among superhumans. The more you kill, the stronger you become."

"Ingesting the magic crystals of high-level monsters can also promote the evolution of supernatural abilities."

Seeing Mingyuan's stunned expression, Ye Nianzhen patted his shoulder earnestly: "These are all experiences I've summarized over many years of research; they're major secrets!"

"You must cherish this and keep it a secret from me!"

The naive Mingyuan nodded vigorously to show his loyalty.

Ye Nianzhen revealed a sly smile with satisfaction.

This is actually content that the Northern Base will release to the public for free in about six months; it is not Ye Nianzhen's research result.

However, it is indeed little known nowadays.

In order not to disrupt the development rhythm of the small world, Ye Nianzhen asked Mingyuan to keep it a secret.

As for why Mingyuan was told in advance... well, it's better to keep the good stuff in the family.

Of course, she would show great favoritism to the members of her team!

Just as the crisis was over and the two were about to return to the base, they heard a commotion coming from outside the base.

The two looked at each other and, without prior arrangement, headed in that direction.

*

Let's go back to midnight the day before.

The group of scoundrels, whose bodies had been dumped in the mass grave, regained consciousness from the impact of the fall.

They didn't immediately realize their situation.

As they stared blankly at each other, zombies with a keen sense of smell arrived nearby.

The man with dreadlocks and the earth-elemental ability user were the first to realize something was wrong.

They roughly pushed the corpse and their companions aside, exchanged a glance, and then rushed towards the base.

The remaining few were a step too slow; one of them had already been bitten on the calf by a zombie and was letting out a shrill scream.

"Brother! Boss! Help me!"

The two ignored him and ran all the way to the outer perimeter of the base.

Here, under the protection of the "foundation," no monsters would approach. They sat down, panting heavily.

"Damn it!" the dreadlocked man spat.

"It must have been that woman who did this! I'll make her pay!"

The two men evaded the guards' eyes and moved the retreated "foundation" device back to its original position.

When they went back to check, the zombies were gone, but none of their brothers survived.

The pieces on the ground were scattered everywhere, making it impossible to tell them apart.

When fresh food is available, both zombies and monsters tend to hunt living creatures.

The man with dreadlocks looked disgusted, while the earth-elemental ability user showed reluctance.

The man with dreadlocks said maliciously, "I have a plan, and you have to cooperate with me."

"What plan?"

"Hmph, you'll find out soon enough."

They secretly hid on the outskirts of the base and waited until the evening of the next day to contact the short, thin man inside.

Hearing that his brothers had died, the short, thin man was somewhat frightened, but under the threat of the dreadlocks, he still cooperated and hauled Mingyuan out.

They timed it perfectly and moved the "foundation" back, but in their haste, they didn't place the device on a level surface.

When tilted, a small gap appears in the protection.

The guards on the perimeter were careless and failed to notice this oversight.

Just as some animals evolve towards larger sizes, others take a different path and evolve towards smaller sizes.

A flock of vampire hummingbirds discovered the gap while migrating.

Their size was just right to get through.

The small and delicious humans are the creatures they love to hunt most when they are reproducing.

A flock of hummingbirds then swarmed into the perimeter of the base and silently drained several guards of their life force, turning them into dried corpses.

His lover, who was guarding him, came to meet him in secret and happened to witness this horrific scene, letting out a terrified scream.

The warriors who came at the sound clashed with the flock of hummingbirds.

*

When Ye Nianzhen and his companion arrived, the soldiers were in retreat.

The two noticed something amiss almost simultaneously. Mingyuan, realizing he couldn't help, volunteered to assist.

"I'm going to adjust the 'foundation'."

Ye Nianzhen nodded: "Be careful."

Mingyuan gave Ye Nianzhen a deep look: "You be careful too."
