Break open the watermelon and the fresh fragrance of the flesh will rush into your nose.
Qin Yao couldn't remember the last time she ate melon. It seemed like a very distant memory.
But the familiar sweet fragrance immediately aroused the greed in her body.
Without bothering to answer Liu Dafu's question "Why is the melon in your hand so red?", Qin Yao took a big bite of the half melon in her hand.
It has a crispy texture, is juicy and sweet as soon as you take a bite. The heat disappears instantly after you swallow it!
Qin Yao took two big gulps again and felt that the dryness in her throat was relieved to the greatest extent. Then she spat out the watermelon seeds in her mouth, let out a comfortable sigh, and handed the other half to Liu Dafu.
“Try it now, it’s sweet and crunchy, so delicious that you’ll want to swallow your tongue!”
Qin Yao's words were not an exaggeration at all. She had not expected the quality of the bitter melon seeds to be so good. She thought that the watermelons she grew would not be red and sweet, but she did not expect that the fruits would be small, but the color and taste were so good.
Seeing Liu Dafu hesitantly taking the watermelon and preparing to eat it, Qin Yao hurriedly reminded him: "Don't swallow the black seeds. Remember to spit them out."
Liu Dafu nodded to indicate that he understood. When he got the watermelon in his hand and smelled its unique sweet and refreshing aroma, he knew that it must be a delicious fruit.
After taking a sip, his eyes instantly widened and he looked at Qin Yao in surprise.
Qin Yao ate the watermelon and asked with a smile: "How is it? Is it delicious?"
Liu Dafu nodded frantically. He had come to Qin Yao in the middle of the day to discuss the road construction wages, and was sweating profusely under the scorching sun. Now, after taking a bite of the sweet and juicy watermelon, he felt refreshed.
Just then a breeze blew from the river, and the two of them retreated to the weeds on the edge of the field. In the shade of the grass, they ate watermelon while enjoying the breeze. Life was so happy.
Liu Dafu ate half of the melon by himself and kept the remaining skin because he had just tasted it and it was also crispy and sweet.
Qin Yao suggested that he take it home, peel off the hardest skin, slice it and stir-fry it, "It's also a delicious dish."
"The peel can be eaten as a vegetable?" Liu Dafu was pleasantly surprised. He looked at the peel in his hand, then at the watermelons of all sizes in the field. He wanted to ask Qin Yao for one and take it home to cool down his family.
Qin Yao held up two fingers and said, "Two hundred coins each. Considering our friendship, I'll give you half of this for free."
Hearing this, Liu Dafu almost couldn't help but call her a profiteer.
"Your melon is not that big, isn't two hundred coins a bit too expensive?" Liu Dafu smiled at Qin Yao and said, "Send less, I'll take two home."
One will be shared among the family, and the remaining one will be sent to the city by the eldest brother early tomorrow morning.
The second child is studying very hard, and the weather is so hot that I’m afraid he must be having a hard time. It’s a good opportunity to give him something sweet to cool him down.
Qin Yao waved her hands and refused to pay even a penny less.
"It's only 200 wen each. Today is the first day of opening. Buy one, get one free. Do you want one?"
If it's buy one get one free, that's still acceptable!
Liu Dafu rolled up his sleeves and smiled, "I'll go and choose the two biggest ones myself!"
Qin Yao reminded with a smile: "The big one may not be the sweetest, but if you get a not-so-sweet one, I'll give you another one."
Qin Yao thought to herself, there is no other businessman more conscientious than me.
When Liu Dafu heard this, he laughed and ran to the melon field. He picked out two that he thought were the biggest and sweetest, held one in each hand, and went home happily.
Before leaving, she asked Qin Yao to send a child to her house in the afternoon to take the money and also deliver the wages she had paid in advance.
Qin Yao agreed, turned around to count all the melons in the field, and picked two good ones to take home.
"Golden Flower!"
Qin Yao shouted when she saw a group of children playing by the river.
Jinhua was startled suddenly. She had already put half of her foot into the river, but she quickly retracted her foot. She raised her head to look towards the source of the voice, and when she saw it was her Third Aunt, she laughed.
"Come here!" Qin Yao shouted again, not allowing any refusal.
Jinhua was still a little scared, so she immediately left her friends and ran over obediently.
Qin Yao sent the village children away from the river and signaled the guilty Jinhua to follow her.
"Aunt San, I didn't sneak into the river to take a bath." Jinhua explained honestly.
Qin Yao reminded again: "Don't go to the river alone to play in the water, remember?"
Jinhua nodded. The little girl was very clever. She glanced at the watermelon in Qin Yao's hand and asked curiously, "Aunt San, is this the watermelon you planted in the field?"
Si Niang told her that the watermelon was delicious, but it looked strange and she didn't know what it tasted like.
Qin Yao nodded and said, "I'll cut the melon and you can take it home."
"Okay!" The little girl licked her lips, looking greedy. She tiptoed closer to the watermelon and smelled it. Her brows furrowed and she looked disgusted. "It doesn't smell like fruit at all."
If Qin Yao had her hands free, she would have pinched the wrinkled little nose.
He smiled mysteriously and said, "When I peel it, it will smell so good that you will drool."
Jinhua immediately showed an expectant expression and followed Qin Yao into the yard.
"Awang, get a bucket of cold water and put the watermelon in it to cool down." Qin Yao instructed.
Awang immediately put down the hoe in his hand, washed his hands, took the watermelon from Qin Yao's hand, put it in the wooden barrel, scooped some cold water to fill the barrel, and then placed the barrel in the shade of the eaves.
After finishing, he turned around and picked up the hoe again, busying himself with planting the onion, ginger and garlic seedlings he had obtained from Sister Zhou's house in the vegetable pot in the yard.
Jinhua stood by the wooden barrel waiting, poking the floating watermelon from time to time. Since she couldn't play with the water in the river, she would play with the water in the barrel and laugh alone.
Qin Yao fetched some cool water and went into the house to wipe her body, then changed into a cool linen skirt and cleaned herself up, allowing the heat from the melon in the water to dissipate.
Waving her hand to signal Jinhua to make way, Qin Yao took out a watermelon, wiped off the water stains, put it on the chopping board, picked up the clean kitchen knife, and gently cut it.
A perfectly ripe watermelon will split into two halves by itself, revealing the light red flesh inside.
It seems that not every watermelon is beautifully red, but Qin Yao tasted the watermelon flesh on the cut surface and it was still very sweet.
The aroma of watermelon filled the whole kitchen. Jinhua shouted impatiently, "Aunt San, let me have a taste, let me have a taste."
"Okay, I'll give you a try!" Qin Yao cut off a piece and handed it to her, reminding her to spit out the seeds and not swallow them.
"If you eat the seeds, they will take root and sprout in your stomach." Qin Yao scared the child.
Jinhua opened her eyes wide in horror; she had just taken a bite of the melon and swallowed it all!
"Just kidding." Qin Yao laughed out loud.
The fear on Jinhua's face instantly turned into helplessness like a little adult. Auntie San is so mean~
He took bite after bite of the watermelon, and the light red watermelon juice flowed between his fingers, and his little face turned into a tabby cat.
Qin Yao was about to say be careful with your clothes, but before she could finish her words, she saw that her floral skirt was already soaked. (End of this chapter)
