Chapter 73 First Contact

Data from the planting base indicates that everything is currently normal. The duration of each of the retrospective xenobiotic infections varies, with most infections occurring in recent decades and a few occurring in the early stages of the apocalypse.

Looking at the data, Lu Xinghe wondered if he was overthinking things.

He shared the data with An Yuan, but An Yuan and Han Ling couldn't see anything wrong either. Perhaps those two children were just a coincidence left over from the beginning of the apocalypse.

The atmosphere on Crescent Island was relaxed for the next few days, and with spring arriving, everyone was engaged in farming, filling the island with a sense of hope.

Luo Ning, Wen Xi'an, and Xiao Ruo joined in. The children played on the ridges of the paddy fields, while they nurtured seedlings in the rice paddies. The children were covered in mud, and so were they.

There were also many human children here, some as young as two or three years old, others as old as seven or eight, but they all watched from afar and dared not approach Xiaoxiao and the two brothers. The three children of different species also had a longing for their companions in their eyes, and they also looked curiously at the children with different eye colors from their own.

After seeing all this, Lu Xinghe went over and gave some cookies to the three children: "Go and play with your older brothers and sisters, and share your cookies with them."

Of the three children, only Xiaoxiao roughly understood what Lu Xinghe meant, but she didn't dare to go. Her older sister didn't go, and neither did the two little ones. So Lu Xinghe patiently led them by the hand and walked over.

The human children were somewhat frightened. Although they had lived on the island for some time and knew that there were alien species around them, and that these alien species had saved the world, they were still afraid.

Yao Cheng and several young security officers walked over to the human children and said encouragingly, "Don't be afraid. They are actually very cute children, and your favorite Commander Lu is here. He will protect you."

The children all looked toward Lu Xinghe, the person they admired most and their guardian angel.

Luo Ning and Wen Xi watched all this nervously; this was their child's first time interacting with a child of a different species.

Lu Xinghe led the alien cub to the human cub, then squatted down and said to the three children, "Eat the cookies with your older siblings."

This time, Xiaoxiao hesitated for a moment before mustering her courage to hand the cookie in her hand to the best-looking boy among the human children.

The little boy looked at the cute and pretty little girl in front of him and shyly took the cookie, saying, "Thank you, little sister."

"You're welcome." Xiaoxiao took the handsome brother's hand without any shyness.

With his older sister as a role model, Yuan You and Yuan Yan also handed out their cookies to the other children, and they all accepted. The world of children is simple, and they soon started playing together. The grass was filled with the children's happy laughter.

Seeing this, both sets of parents breathed a sigh of relief. Lu Xinghe did not leave them, after all, this was the first time these children had met, and he wanted to prevent any accidents from happening.

Luo Ning smiled at Wen Xi and said, "I didn't expect Xiao Xiao to be such a looks-obsessed person."

Wen Xi's eyes also held a hint of a smile: "She's only a year and a half old, how would she know these things?"

“She’s small but smart, otherwise why would she give the cookie to the prettiest one instead of the closest one?” Luo Ning replied.

She had only said it casually, but Wen Xi paused for a moment, then silently continued with what she was doing.

As the sun set, everyone finished work and went home. After a busy day, everyone was a little tired, except for Luo Ning and Wen Xi, who were still fine. The two of them helped pack up the tools.

When the humans who were about to return saw that the women were still working, they all went back to help.

Luo Ning was somewhat surprised to see them return: "You guys go back and eat quickly, the two of us can finish cooking soon."

"It's okay, let's finish quickly so we can all go back together." The leader said with a smile, then took the tools from Luo Ning's hands, and the others helped take the things from Wen Xi's hands as well.

Luo Ning felt a warmth in her heart. Even without her past memories, she still felt a sense of relief and joy in the face of such a moment.

After all the tools were packed into the warehouse by the field, Lu Xinghe and Yao Cheng returned with the children. Each child had a good haul; some wore little flower hats, while others had pretty stones in their pockets.

Upon seeing Luo Ning, Yuan You and Yuan Yan eagerly presented her with the stones they had found, each babbling that theirs was the most beautiful. Luo Ning naturally praised both of them, which satisfied the two little ones.

Xiaoxiao also put the little flower hat that Yao Cheng had made for her mother on her head and said it looked very nice.

Wen Xi glanced at Yao Cheng, then took off the flower hat and put it back on Xiao Xiao's head. She then politely said to Yao Cheng, "Thank you. Xiao Xiao seems to like it very much."

Yao Cheng could tell from her words that she was still keeping her distance from him. There had been no news of Du Lu for a year. Everyone said that he had either died in the beast tide or died from the genetic weapon. He had thought that he could win Wen Xi's heart, but Wen Xi still hadn't given him any chance in the past year.

After returning, everyone sat together to eat and chat. Because Luo Ning couldn't eat, Lu Xinghe took her back to her room and gave her a diary.

"What is this?" Luo Ning asked.

Lu Xinghe replied, "Your old diary entries might help you recover your memories."

Luo Ning opened her diary, which was filled with her own handwriting. It recorded her memories after she learned that she would lose her memory, such as what flowers she saw, how many times her baby kicked her belly, and the interesting things she talked about with Wen Xi'an and Xiao Ruo.

On the last page, there is a message to myself: Dear self, when you see this text, you must have really lost consciousness. It's okay, don't be afraid. You can treat it as a beautiful beginning given to you by God, without the cruel memories of the past ten years. You can completely trust Lu Xinghe, don't be afraid of him. Even if you are afraid, don't back down. Such a handsome man is yours. Even if something happens, we won't lose out. Be brave and accept him.

Luo Ning felt both embarrassed and amused after seeing this message. She admitted that this was just her personality, but Lu Xinghe had definitely seen it, and she wondered what he would think.

She glanced at him furtively and saw that he was watching the two children eat, but his eyes kept glancing in her direction.

Luo Ning felt comfortable with his moderate care and presence. He understood her, so he gave her space and time, and nothing he did for her made her feel uncomfortable.

After the children finished eating, he took them to take a bath. This time, Luo Ning went into the bathroom to help, no longer letting him do these things alone.

"I'll do it, you go and rest," Lu Xinghe said.

"It's okay, I'm not tired either." Luo Ning said and started running the bathwater.

When Lu Xinghe saw that she had taken the initiative to do these things, the corners of his mouth couldn't help but turn up slightly.

While taking a bath, Yuan Yan was very mischievous and got Luo Ning's clothes wet. She reached for a towel to dry herself, and Lu Xinghe also reached out to help her. Their hands touched.

In an instant, an image flashed through Luo Ning's mind: on a vast desert, a pale boy lay on the ground, and she straddled his abdomen, pressing his body down to prevent him from moving. Then she grabbed the shard from the boy's chest and pulled it out forcefully! The boy, in pain, opened his eyes and slammed his hand heavily towards her head. She grabbed the boy's wrist and firmly restrained him.

And this young man seems to be Lu Xinghe.

Although Lu Xinghe said that their first encounter was when she saved him, he did not describe the details, so this is her memory.

She paused for a moment, forgetting to remove her hand from Lu Xinghe's.

Lu Xinghe could feel the real warmth in his hand and was unwilling to let go.

Finally, it was the two little ones, Yuan You and Yuan Yan, who followed suit and placed their hands on theirs, which brought the two of them back to their senses.

Luo Ning was the first to withdraw her hand, her heart pounding.

"You should dry yourself off first." Lu Xinghe handed her a towel, then pressed the two little ones into the bathtub.

Luo Ning wiped the water off her body, wondering why she suddenly had those images from earlier. Was it because she touched his body?

She was a little uncertain. She looked at Lu Xinghe's hands again. His fingers were clean and slender. When she touched them earlier, she could feel the thin calluses on his hands. The muscles in his arms were also well-proportioned and strong, with veins protruding from his skin. He looked very powerful.

I don't know if touching him again will bring back any memories, but wouldn't it be abrupt to do that? And the idea that touching him could restore some memories sounds a bit far-fetched.

Should we try again?

Lu Xinghe noticed that she was frowning as she looked at his hand, and assumed that she was bothered by his touch just now. When they first met at the Northern Base, she was also very bothered and even cried.

"I'm sorry, I didn't notice earlier," he said softly, hoping she wouldn't be angry.

Luo Ning quickly looked away, pretending to be nonchalant: "It's nothing."

After the two brothers finished washing, Lu Xinghe carried them out, one in each arm, so that Luo Ning could also have time to take a shower.

After they left, Luo Ning looked at herself in the mirror, then at her hands, recalling the scene in her mind that had just occurred to her—a seemingly exciting beginning.

She wanted to remember as soon as possible, whether it was the good or the bad, because it was her life, her unique life.

Hot water gushed down, and even though her body didn't feel tired, the hot water felt very comfortable. She washed herself inch by inch, trying to recall her memories under the hot water.

Lu Xinghe listened to the sounds from the bathroom, his throat bobbed, but he quickly composed himself and calmly continued what he was doing.

When Luo Ning came out after taking a shower, Lu Xinghe had already put the two little ones to sleep. The little ones had good habits and went to sleep on time, without causing any trouble.

"I'm going to the next room first. You should get some rest. Call me if you need anything." Lu Xinghe stood up and said the same words he had when he left a few days ago.

"Hmm." Luo Ning saw him to the door this time. She was still thinking about whether to try touching him again. She had been thinking for a while in the hot water, but still couldn't remember anything.

As Lu Xinghe walked out and was about to close the door, he found her staring at him blankly.

"What's wrong?" he asked.

Looking at his sharply defined face under the light, Luo Ning made up her mind: "I want to touch your arm again, is that alright?"
