Chapter 38 King of the Sky

After a hug, Wenxi's older sister, Wenrong, led them upstairs.

Luo Ning observed Wen Rong from behind. She couldn't tell whether Wen Rong was a completely humanoid mutant or a mutant that interacted with animals, but she could sense that she was very strong. Such powerful mutants usually ate many people.

This residential building has fifty-eight floors, and Wenxi's home is on the fifty-eighth floor. Before the apocalypse, it would have been considered a top-tier luxury residence, but now...

Luo Ning looked at the dilapidated staircase, the scattered human skeletons, and the blood-stained walls, and became even more vigilant.

"Sister Wen, how long have you been living here?" she asked Wen Rong.

As Wen Rong walked ahead, she turned back and said, "It's been about three months."

"When did you wake up?"

"About three or four years ago, when I woke up I didn't know where I was. I wandered around and eventually found my way home."

Luo Ning thought that Wen Xi had also awakened three or four years ago, which was also close in time. Was it a coincidence?

She looked at the man again. Although he was lame, he was still quite handsome, upright and dashing. He hadn't said a word from beginning to end, and his expression was extremely indifferent in the face of the three aliens around him.

After climbing more than forty floors, Wen Xi was a little tired, and Luo Ning pretended to be exhausted and leaned against Wen Xi to rest.

Wen Rong looked at them and asked, "Are you tired?"

Luo Ning smiled sheepishly: "Well, Wen Xi and I aren't in great shape, so we need to rest for a while. You two go up first, we'll be there in a bit."

"I'll wait for you all to come together." Wen Rong also stopped.

Luo Ning wanted to whisper something to Wen Xi, but Wen Rong kept following her, so she couldn't find an opportunity.

It wasn't that she didn't believe in sisterhood, but Wen Rong's first impression of her wasn't very friendly, especially the way Wen Rong looked at that man after seeing them—it resembled an animal guarding its food.

In the world of alien species, food is always the top priority. People like her and Wenxi, who don't want to eat people and just want to wander the world, are the oddities among the alien species.

She wanted to take Wenxi away, but Wenxi was still immersed in the joy of seeing her relatives, and she couldn't bear to interrupt her. Or perhaps she was seeing things.

After resting for a few minutes, they continued climbing and finally reached the top floor five minutes later.

The penthouse is a duplex with understated yet elegant decor. Even after more than seventy years, the owner's refined taste is still evident. However, the house is incredibly messy, with old furniture and clothes scattered everywhere, dust piling up, and even cobwebs in some places.

Looking at the cramped house, Luo Ning thought, "That's just how young lady is. Even after becoming a mutant, she doesn't clean her room herself. If I were to live here for three months, I wouldn't even bother to tidy up the house, let alone make it spotless. At least I'd fold my clothes and sweep away the dust. Otherwise, it would be really hard to fall asleep."

Looking at everything in the house, Wenxi recalled the past, and her eyes welled up with tears.

Luo Ning felt that she was becoming more and more like a human, even more like a human than herself, because it was very difficult for different species to have emotions.

After a while, Wen Xi took Luo Ning to her room, while Wen Rong nestled on the sofa, and the man who hadn't spoken went into another room.

Wen Xi's room was large, and the furniture, covered in dust, was quite exquisite. Wen Xi opened the walk-in closet and found a few clothes that were barely wearable, handing them to Luo Ning: "These are the only two that are still in good condition. Put them on first."

Luo Ning immediately took off her blood-stained clothes and put on long clothes and trousers. She immediately felt much better. Wen Xi also turned her back to change her clothes. She was wearing a blue dress. Seventy years had passed, but her appearance remained as young as when she died. Wearing the dress, she looked like a princess.

"You should put on some clothes; it'll make it easier to move around," Luo Ning advised.

Wen Xi smiled and said, "Let's change tomorrow. This is my favorite dress, and I want to wear it again."

"Oh, okay." Luo Ning didn't say anything more. She looked at Wen Xi's shoulder. The gunshot wound had completely healed without leaving a trace. It seemed that she was still a completely different species.

You're probably overthinking the pregnancy thing.

"Wenxi, we'd better be careful here," she couldn't help but remind her.

“Luo Ning, don’t worry, she’s my own sister, she’ll be fine,” Wen Xi replied.

"But you haven't seen each other for a long time, and people change."

"Okay, I understand, thank you for your kindness." Wen Xi didn't take it to heart.

Luo Ning didn't say much, otherwise she would be suspected of trying to sow discord between the sisters, so she could only be more careful.

After the two changed their clothes, a torrential downpour began with lightning and thunder. Wen Xi reminisced with Wen Rong outside, while Luo Ning used an old pot in the rooftop garden to catch the rainwater in preparation for cleaning the room.

After filling the pot with rainwater, she carried it back to her room, only to see the man from before standing upstairs. This time, he wasn't indifferent; instead, he looked at her with a pitying gaze.

Luo Ning ignored her and carried the pot into the living room, where she saw Wen Rong gently stroking Wen Xi's head, indeed acting like an older sister.

After entering the bedroom, Luo Ning listened to the two sisters talking while quickly cleaning the room; everything seemed normal.

As evening fell, the rain intensified. The man started a fire upstairs to cook, and the aroma of the food filled the entire house. Wen Rong even went to help. The food consisted of uninfected animals that Wen Rong had caught, along with some mushrooms and wild vegetables. After the meal was ready, the man ate quietly, while Wen Rong watched longingly from the side.

This scene reminded Luo Ning of the time when she was with Lu Xinghe and An Xiaoruo, when they ate like this, and she would watch longingly from the side.

It seems I was overthinking things. Perhaps the alien species are also changing and are not incapable of completely overcoming their appetites.

Having not had a proper rest in a long time, Luo Ning and Wen Xi quickly fell asleep with blankets and a bed. She started dreaming again, in which someone was chasing her. She ran with all her might, but it was as if her movements had been slowed down, and she couldn't run fast no matter what.

A sudden clap of thunder woke her up. Instinctively, she glanced in the direction where Wen Xi had been sleeping, but Wen Xi was no longer there.

She immediately got out of bed and went outside. Not only was Wen Xi not there, but she also couldn't sense Wen Rong or that man's presence. A flash of lightning streaked across the sky, and she saw footprints pointing outwards on the pile of dust.

She had observed it when she came in during the day, and there were no footprints on the dust, so these were the most recent ones.

She walked out without hesitation. She didn't think Wen Xi would abandon her as a friend and sister. What she was worried about was that Wen Rong would lure Wen Xi out and carry out a plan to defeat them one by one.

Although she knew Wenxi had left the building, the torrential rain had diluted their presence, and she still couldn't sense them.

As she was searching around, she smelled blood, and it was Wen Xi's blood. She froze for a moment and then ran quickly toward the direction from which the smell of blood was coming.

In the pouring rain, she saw Wenxi being pinned to the ground by a winged person. Wenxi was struggling desperately, her hand tightly gripping a sharp stone. Even when the stone cut her palm, she did not let go, knowing that the blood would provide guidance to Luo Ning.

The torrential rain also diluted Luo Ning's scent, so Wen Rong, who had wings, was unaware of her arrival.

This was the first time Luo Ning had ever seen a mutant species that interacted with winged creatures. The novel only briefly mentioned such a species: rare, agile, and powerful, the king of the sky, but not formed by natural interaction of viral genes, but artificially created.

However, the novel did not describe these rare alien species or the reasons for their creation in detail. Luo Ning remembers leaving a comment at the time jokingly asking if the author had forgotten to write about them.

"Dad, I've caught her, but she's struggling so hard. Should we kill her now?" Wen Rong asked the man holding the umbrella beside her with a coquettish tone.

A bolt of lightning cleaved the sky, and Luo Ning saw that the man holding the umbrella was the same lame man who was with Wen Rong, but Wen Rong called this man "Dad".

The man nodded: "Kill her. She's too weak and worthless, far inferior to her companion."

"Okay." Wen Rong happily agreed, then raised her fist and punched Wen Xi hard in the temple.

Wen Xi closed her eyes in despair. She shouldn't have disbelieved Luo Ning; kinship truly doesn't exist among most alien species.

But the death she had anticipated did not come. Instead, Wen Rong cried out in pain and then let go of her hand.

She opened her eyes and saw that Wen Rong's neck was completely pierced by a steel bar. This method immediately reminded her of Luo Ning. She turned her head and saw Luo Ning standing not far away, her wet hair clinging to her snow-white neck. Although there was fear in her icy blue eyes, there was even more determination.

Luo Ning's body was trembling uncontrollably, both from the cold and from fear. She had a chance to run away, but she couldn't bear to watch Wen Xi be killed by her own sister. Besides, if Wen Xi died, she would be next. It was better to fight the enemy together.

In the animal kingdom, the eagle is the king of the sky, but a rabbit, when cornered, can also kick an eagle to death.

"It hurts so much." Wen Rong pulled the steel bar out of her neck. The wound healed quickly, which was enough to show her strength.

Luo Ning didn't give her enough time to react, using her speed advantage to quickly approach, and thrust the iron spike in her hand directly at Wen Rong's head.

Wen Rong flapped her wings and took to the air, but little did she know that Luo Ning's target was not her at all, but her "father".

"Dad!" Wen Rong cried out in surprise, immediately swooping down towards Luo Ning, and the eagle and the rabbit became entangled in a fight.

Wenxi got up from the ground and tried to grab the man, but as soon as she made a move, she felt a sharp pain in her stomach, which made her kneel down again.

When the man saw Wen Xi coming to grab him, he was about to run away, but he didn't expect Wen Xi to fall to the ground in pain. But she was clearly not seriously injured, so why did she fall down?

After a violent tremor, Luo Ning and Wen Rong fell heavily to the ground next to Wen Xi. Luo Ning was grateful that the heavy rain had soaked Wen Rong's wings, otherwise she would have been caught by Wen Rong and flown into the sky.

Wen Rong's fist came crashing down again, and Luo Ning retaliated without backing down, but she was no match for Wen Rong's strength. She took several punches from Wen Rong and her body slammed heavily against the wall.

Just as Wen Rong picked up the steel bar to stab Luo Ning, Wen Xi, who had collapsed from abdominal pain, suddenly grabbed Wen Rong's body and bit her hand holding the steel bar.

Wen Rong impatiently wanted to kill Wen Xi first, but she was shocked to find that her power seemed to be disappearing.
