Nothing moved Lu Xinghe more than losing something and then regaining it.
When Lu Xinghe heard Luo Ning's voice, his heart, which had been shrouded in coldness, finally warmed. This warmth spread from his heart to his eyes, turning into tears that he rarely showed.
He looked up at the rooftop, where a figure he had never forgotten shone in the night.
With a whoosh, the team members who didn't recognize Luo Ning all pointed their guns at her. He Cheng thought Luo Ning's voice sounded familiar, but he couldn't remember who it was for a moment.
Luo Ning immediately said, "Don't shoot, I really want to help."
"Put down your gun," Lu Xinghe commanded, then called out in a trembling voice, "Luo Ning."
Luo Ning heard the man calling her name, but since it was their first meeting, why would he call her name? He must have misheard.
"This way, follow me." She didn't dwell on the issue; the most important thing right now was to get out of there. She ran along the edge of the rooftop to lead the way for them.
Lu Xinghe received no response from Luo Ning and, feeling somewhat puzzled, he ran forward, following her figure on the ground.
Although the team members had many questions, they had no choice but to obey their commander's orders, especially given the urgency of the situation.
But when He Cheng heard the name Lu Xinghe had just called out, he was so shocked that his mouth dropped open: "It's Luo Ning, is it really Luo Ning?"
Lu Xinghe nodded affirmatively: "Yes."
He Cheng thought Luo Ning was dead. He believed that if she were still alive, she would definitely come looking for them. However, a whole year had passed and she had not appeared. Many people thought that Wen Rong had abandoned her at sea.
But now she suddenly appeared before them.
He Cheng felt something was strange, but he couldn't quite put his finger on why.
With Luo Ning's guidance, the group quickly bypassed the collapsed area and avoided the alien species coming from the other side. However, the alien species were very fast, and even so, they still surged towards them like a tide.
The roar of human construction vehicles echoed from the edge of the ruined city. The group ran towards them at full speed, and once they reached the construction vehicles, they could form a solid defensive zone.
However, some speed-type mutants had already caught up with them. The team members immediately returned fire, and the bullets pierced through the bodies of those hideous mutants. Their skin turned gray at a visible speed, and they fell to the ground as rotting lumps.
Luo Ning's heart trembled. Was this the destructive power of a gene weapon? It gave the alien species absolutely no chance to struggle or survive.
She suddenly felt a little scared, wondering if these humans would treat her the same way later.
As Lu Xinghe and his group ran, they threw down their sonic devices. When the aliens that were chasing them entered the range of the sonic waves, they all opened their mouths wide and knelt on the ground, looking extremely pained.
This greatly slowed down the alien species' pursuit, buying the small team time to leave.
On a distant high-rise building, Boss Jin looked on with a grave expression as he watched a dozen or so people block his group.
“You’re right, the human army is indeed very strong. I was overconfident,” Boss Jin said to the young man beside him.
Under the moonlight, the man remained calm and did not respond to Boss Jin, seemingly somewhat taciturn.
It was Du Lu; his eyes were still icy blue, devoid of any emotion.
Boss Jin turned to look at the man: "What suggestions do you have next?"
Du Lu replied, "Spread out and don't give them the chance to catch us all at once."
Boss Jin asked cryptically, "Do you think we can't beat them?"
Du Lu nodded: "We can't win now."
"Du Lu, what's wrong with you? Why are you demoralizing your own people while boosting the enemy's morale? I think you're in Cao Cao's camp but your heart is with Han," said another tall man next to Boss Jin, dissatisfied.
Jin the Elder scolded in a low voice, "Wei Dong, don't talk nonsense and ruin our family harmony."
Wei Dong retorted, "Boss Jin, I'm telling you this with solid evidence. Du Lu's woman and child are currently at the human base. He's not trustworthy."
Du Lu remained unmoved, unconcerned about what was being said about him.
"That's why Du Lu joined us. His woman and child can't be reverted to human form. According to the base's methods, those who can't be reverted will be killed, right, Du Lu?" Boss Jin asked rhetorically.
Du Lu replied calmly, "They were merely products of my whims when I was human. How humans deal with them is none of my business. If you still doubt me, then I will leave with my people, and we'll each rely on our own abilities."
Upon hearing this, Boss Jin immediately smiled obsequiously and said, "You're exaggerating. We didn't suspect you; we all have the same goal." He then turned to Wei Dong and said, "Wei Dong, don't bring up what you just said again, or don't blame me for not warning you."
"Yes." Wei Dong glanced at Du Lu with dissatisfaction, but suppressed his resentment. He would secretly find evidence of Du Lu's betrayal.
"So what should we do now?" Boss Jin asked Lawyer Du again.
Du Lu looked ahead into the darkness: "Don't chase them. Their army is just ahead. Every time we go forward, we will suffer the same losses. We are not suited to a head-on confrontation with them unless we have the strength to surpass them."
After he finished speaking, the sound of several armed helicopters came from the edge of the city, and the heavy firepower on the helicopters mercilessly shot down the aliens.
This was a plan that Lu Xinghe had prepared with him in advance, in order to help him gain Boss Jin's trust.
Jin the Elder stroked his beard and then let out a deep sound. The mutants who were chasing Lu Xinghe and the others turned around and retreated. Only the mutants without consciousness continued to follow the scent of human flesh and blood, but they were immediately and mercilessly killed by human genetic weapons.
Although humans can now turn mutants back into humans, they cannot use the drug when facing these out-of-control mutants unless they are isolated in a separate space and the drug is administered to them simultaneously.
Otherwise, if any alien species were to revert back to human form first, they would immediately be devoured by the other alien species that have not yet reverted. This would not only fail to save lives but also waste the medicine that was created at great expense of manpower and resources.
Therefore, sometimes, humans must be ruthless and deprive some alien species of the opportunity to revert to human form.
The air was thick with the smell of blood and the decay of alien bodies.
"I'll leave you here. I... I have to go now," Luo Ning said. Although she liked these humans very much, her life was also very important.
"Wait a minute." Lu Xinghe called out to her, and he nimbly climbed onto the roof to stand in front of her.
When Luo Ning saw him come up, she subconsciously took two steps back and looked at him, puzzled. Fortunately, the man's gun was pointed at the ground and not at her.
Seeing her dodge, Lu Xinghe grabbed her and said, "Where are you going? Aren't you coming home with me?"
It seems a bit too intimate for a strange man to say such things to a strange woman.
"Go home?" Luo Ning was taken aback.
Lu Xinghe noticed that her eyes held a sense of unfamiliarity towards him, as well as some fear.
Could she have forgotten him? Did that ten-year amnesia incident still happen?
"Luo Ning," he called out to her, his voice trembling slightly.
"How do you know my name?" Luo Ning asked in confusion.
"You really don't remember?" Lu Xinghe felt a sharp pain in his heart. Perhaps this was a joke that fate was playing on him and her.
He was once forced to forget her, so he also had to experience what it was like to be forgotten by her.
Luo Ning didn't know how to answer. This man could call her name accurately, so he must know her, but she had no impression of him and couldn't remember where she had seen him before.
"Luo Ning, it really is you." He Cheng and the others also came up to the rooftop and greeted them warmly.
Luo Ning was even more confused when she realized that this person also recognized her.
"Where have you been all year? Do you know how desperate Commander Lu has been looking for you? Why don't you come back to the base? Don't you miss your two sons?" He Cheng was unaware that Luo Ning had lost her previous memories.
"Son, two? I... whose son am I with?" Luo Ning was somewhat incoherent. Things were beyond her imagination. She thought these people were joking, but their eyes were sincere and serious, not at all like they were laughing.
"His." He Cheng and his teammates all pointed to Lu Xinghe.
Luo Ning's eyes widened, then she denied it: "Impossible, I'm not married yet, and how could a human and a different species have a child?"
Although she did want to find a handsome husband and have two beautiful children when she was a teenager, she never imagined that such a thing would happen without her knowledge.
"Come back with me first, and I'll tell you about the past in detail." Lu Xinghe pulled her towards the stairwell, as it wasn't safe there.
Luo Ning was being pulled along by him in a daze when suddenly a figure leaped through the air and rushed towards Lu Xinghe at high speed. It was Zhou Yingying, who had disappeared for a long time.
"Luo Ning, hurry up and go! I'll hold them off!" Zhou Yingying shouted. She had come to rescue Luo Ning.
Lu Xinghe pulled Luo Ning aside and raised his gun to fire, but Luo Ning pressed his hand down: "Don't shoot, she's my friend."
Zhou Yingying missed her target. Before she could even get up, everyone's guns were pointed at her. If Luo Ning hadn't stopped her, she would have been riddled with bullets by now.
"Your friend?" Lu Xinghe scrutinized Zhou Yingying.
Luo Ning nodded immediately: "A friend who has accompanied me on the journey."
"Take it back," Lu Xinghe ordered.
Zhou Yingying wanted to resist, but Luo Ning quickly comforted her, saying, "Yingying, it's okay. It seems they don't kill all the alien species."
"How is that possible? Didn't you see how many they killed just now?" Zhou Yingying looked at everyone warily.
“But I’m still alive,” Luo Ning said.
He Cheng then stepped forward: "Come back with us. We have a potion to turn you back into a human. Otherwise, this will be your grave."
Luo Ning was stunned for a moment: "You really developed a drug to bring back humanity?"
Lu Xinghe nodded: "Yes, we've developed it."
However, this potion cannot revert all alien species back to human form, such as Wenxi and her daughter, his two sons with Luo Ning, and it is very likely that Luo Ning is also human.
