Chapter 57 The War of the Roses

Luo Ning did not receive the words she was expecting.

No one had ever taught the young security officer, who only knew how to fight, how to get along with someone he liked, but his burning gaze could not be concealed.

"Why are you staring at me like that?" Luo Ning asked curiously.

Lu Xinghe was silent for a moment before replying, "I'm thinking about some things I regret."

"Regret? Regret what?" Luo Ning felt uneasy.

Lu Xinghe's beautiful eyes shone brightly: "If I had known we would be together now, I shouldn't have wasted those years back then."

At eighteen, the boy is reserved and restrained, not daring to overstep boundaries or express himself, and can only cautiously observe in silence.

Luo Ning's eyes widened: "Back then?"

Does he mean that he had feelings for her back when the three of them were still living in a basement in the small town?

Lu Xinghe didn't answer, then buried his face in Luo Ning's neck, his body tightly enveloping her. He wanted to make up for it, whether in reality or in his dreams, he wanted to make up for it.

The world was quiet for a week. Nothing happened at the base; there were no alien invasions or further attacks on transport convoys. But that didn't mean the world would remain peaceful.

Satellites transmitted images of the beast tide, the largest since the apocalypse. It is currently moving towards the base at an average speed of fifty kilometers per hour and will arrive in about twenty days. In addition to humanoid and animal-like alien species, there are also some giant arthropods.

The base estimated that this beast tide could fill in the lava belt and canyons, which would be the true end of humanity.

The civilians at the base were unaware of this, because even if they knew, they would be powerless to do anything and would only increase panic. The higher-ups decided to relocate some people to the new base, even though it was still underdeveloped, but they had no other choice.

The group being evacuated consisted of a portion of the research personnel. Planes took off one after another, and those unaware of the situation assumed that supplies had been discovered somewhere, all filled with hopeful anticipation as the planes returned.

Luo Ning had not seen Lu Xinghe for more than ten days. He had gone to the new base as part of the advance team to clear out the alien species and wait for the others to arrive.

Luo Ning and Wen Xi left on a small plane three days before the beast tide arrived at the base. The gene department and the medical department had already gone to the new base in advance. There were only her, Wen Xi and more than 20 security officers on this plane. Because of the long distance, the plane would fly for four hours and stop at a transit airport, and then fly for another four hours to reach the new base that was said to be at sea.

Looking at the city below, which was getting smaller and smaller, Luo Ning recalled the plot of the novel. No beast tide happened in the year An Xiaoruo turned sixteen, but a beast tide did occur after the genes in her body were awakened.

Although humans used firearms and An Xiaoruo's genes to stop the beast tide from trampling, nearly 100,000 people still died in the beast tide.

Humanity has achieved its greatest victory in history; this is the novel's final ending.

There's a second part to the novel, but unfortunately Luo Ning was busy with final exams at the time and didn't continue reading it, so she doesn't know what the second part is about. She only saw readers in the comments section saying: "The author is a treasure, I wish I had met him on XX."

She thought the second season would be a sweet romance drama.

"Why isn't Xiao Ruo with us?" Wen Xi asked, her face pale and bloodless.

Luo Ning came to her senses: "Don't put all your eggs in one basket. She's on another plane."

"Will we come back in the future?" Wenxi asked again.

Luo Ning placed her hand on the porthole, looking at the base that had become a tiny dot: "It will come back, but by then things may have changed."

More than two hours into the flight, Luo Ning was dozing off in a corner with Wen Xi when she suddenly opened her eyes and began to feel the sensations.

"What's wrong?" Wenxi asked.

"It seems like a winged alien is approaching. Can you sense it?"

Wen Xi sensed it for a moment and shook her head: "No."

Her senses have been getting weaker lately; the movement of the air, the flapping of insects' wings, and the fragrance of distant flowers are all gradually fading away from her.

But she is still an alien species, a weaker alien species than before.

Luo Ning was certain that a winged alien species had approached, but airplanes are equipped with sonic devices, so ordinary alien species cannot get close to airplanes.

The aircraft's radar had already detected these alien species. Protected by the sonic device, the plane landed safely at the transit airport. Because the plane needed maintenance and refueling, it would not be able to take off again for another two hours.

Luo Ning got off the plane and looked up at the sky. There were no clouds in the sky and no trace of the winged aliens, but she still felt that something was strange.

They are the only plane at the airport right now. Besides the hundreds of soldiers protecting the airport, the rest are the twenty-odd security officers accompanying them.

Lu Xinghe's satellite phone rang at that moment; he knew when she had arrived.

"Luo Ning." He called her name. There was some noise coming from the other side, as if there was construction going on.

"Yes, are you alright?" Luo Ning responded. She hadn't heard his voice for several days and missed him.

"It's alright, we can meet in six hours. It's raining here, I'll come pick you up." Lu Xinghe coughed after saying that.

Luo Ning gripped the microphone tightly: "You have a cold?"

But the signal suddenly dropped, and she couldn't hear what Lu Xinghe was saying anymore. It was common for the signal to be bad. After she hung up the phone, she saw Wen Xi also getting off the plane.

The cabin was stuffy, and after getting off the plane, Wenxi leaned against the wire mesh and tried to vomit, but nothing came out.

Luo Ning patted her back from behind and handed her water with lemon in it, which made Wen Xi feel a little better.

It's springtime now, and the weather is hot. Wenxi is wearing a light shirt. She is still slender, but her belly is already slightly protruding. The baby is almost four months old and has grown very quickly during this time.

A large patch of pink roses bloomed on the airport's wire fence. Each flower was large and full, and the petals swayed gently in the breeze. Luo Ning picked a large bunch to take on the plane, hoping to add some color to the dim and cramped cabin and make people feel more comfortable.

But the wind seemed to suddenly stop, the chirping of insects ceased, the air became even more oppressive, and the earth seemed to tremble slightly.

She paused for two seconds, then immediately grabbed Wenxi's hand and ran towards the plane, shouting to the people in the airport, "The aliens are coming from the west!"

The soldiers on the control tower immediately took observation and, sure enough, saw a humanoid alien group running rapidly toward them. The gathering of humans made them feel the presence of flesh and blood, and they were rushing toward them recklessly.

"Why are they all humanoid mutants?" The airport commander frowned, then immediately organized heavy firepower to defend against them.

After Luo Ning and Wen Xi boarded the plane, it could not take off immediately because the fuel tank was not full. Otherwise, it would crash due to insufficient fuel during the flight.

Four security officers remained on the plane to protect them, while the rest disembarked to fight. Luo Ning also carried a gun and iron spikes. She had been practicing shooting during this time, and the high sensitivity of the alien species allowed her to hit the bullseye every time.

Listening to the sound of the waves outside, Wen Xi's body trembled slightly with tension. As a mutant, she shouldn't have been worried. As long as there were no other mutants around, these mindless mutants wouldn't attack her and Luo Ning.

But for some reason, she felt very uneasy.

"Wenxi, I'm going down to help. Don't leave the plane," Luo Ning said. As a mutant species stronger than humans, her help could reduce human casualties, and at least protect the pilots, otherwise they wouldn't be able to leave.

"Wait a minute." Wen Xi called out to her, then took the iron spike from Luo Ning's hand and pierced her palm, letting the spike get stained with her blood. This was the only thing she could do at the moment.

Luo Ning gave her a reassuring smile and then jumped off the plane to stand guard beside the crew who were refueling. The aliens were approaching the edge of the airport. This time, all the aliens were humanoid, and there was not a single animal-type alien in sight. Underneath their tattered clothes, they were completely unconscious and fearlessly rushed in despite the gunfire.

The bullets provided at the airport this time all contained An Xiaoruo's genes. Any alien that was hit fell to the ground. Although they did not die immediately, they lost their ability to move.

However, there were simply too many alien species. Some of them still managed to cross the line of fire and run towards the plane, baring their teeth and drooling in the wind, driven by their hunger. Although they still looked like humans, they were already completely beast-like.

Humans and aliens were fighting each other, blood splattered under the roses, and screams and wails made the delicate petals tremble.

Luo Ning went all out, and one by one the aliens fell to her iron spikes, their hands and bodies splattered with blood.

Amidst the bloodshed, she sensed a terrifying presence, like a lurking beast, lurking in the airport control tower.

She immediately looked towards the control tower and discovered that it had been breached at some point. The glass of the tower was covered in blood, and there was no sign of human life inside. At the top of the tower, an alien creature was crouching, coldly staring at the plane.

“Du Lu.” Her heart skipped a beat. If Du Lu was here, then Wen Rong must be here too. Those winged aliens really didn’t appear out of thin air.

Although Wen Rong captured Du Lu last time, her target was probably Wen Xi, so their target this time should still be Wen Xi.

She immediately ran towards the plane, but a very fast figure in the sky swooped down towards her. Instinctively, she turned around quickly and swept her leg out with a heavy kick. The dark figure groaned and fell several meters away.

It was indeed Wen Rong. Several of her ribs had been broken by Luo Ning's kick, and the broken bones had pierced her lungs. She was spitting out blood and foam.

When eagles and rabbits meet, their eyes are filled with hatred. Wen Rong wants to get revenge for the loss she suffered last time, while Luo Ning hates this woman so much that she wants to scald her with boiling water and pluck her feathers just thinking about how she caused Wen Xi to kill Old Feng. Only by killing Wen Rong can Wen Xi be safe for the time being.

Wen Rong folded her wings and rushed over to fight in close combat. Luo Ning also gripped the iron spikes in her hand tightly to fight back. The eagle and the rabbit were so entangled that only afterimages could be seen.

Wen Xi could sense that Luo Ning and Wen Rong were right next to the plane. She nervously looked out the window and saw that the airport was already littered with corpses and rivers of blood. She felt nauseous again.

"Are you alright?" The female security officer helped her sit down.

She shook her head: "I want to get off the plane, can you let me off?"

She wanted to help Luo Ning. There were far too many mutants now, and they were all humanoid mutants with greater strength and speed. The situation was unfavorable for humanity. She couldn't help many people, but she could at least help Luo Ning. She was afraid that Luo Ning would die at Wen Rong's hands. She would rather die herself than have anything happen to Luo Ning.

“No, it’s too dangerous down there.” The female safety officer disagreed.

Just after the female security officer finished speaking, the cabin door was suddenly violently broken by something from the outside, and the four security officers immediately pointed their guns at the cabin door.

With a bang, the heavy hatch was pulled open, and several strong and muscular aliens appeared at the doorway. They coldly surveyed the area before their gazes settled on Wen Xi.

Wen Xi stared in shock at these strange beings. They clearly lacked divine consciousness, yet they seemed to have come here with a purpose, which was a very contradictory existence.

Luo Ning and Wen Rong fell from the sky to the ground again. She felt that her leg was broken, and Wen Rong was knocked unconscious. Taking advantage of this opportunity, she used an iron spike to stab Wen Rong's temple.

But a strange creature lunged at her, and the two rolled to the side. By the time she killed the creature, Wen Rong had already disappeared.

Humans ran out of bullets, and the survivors retreated to the basement. Luo Ning endured the pain of her broken leg to go and meet Wen Xi, but she was stunned when she saw the destroyed hatch.

She climbed into the plane and saw only four security officers and several alien corpses; Winsey was gone.

"Wenxi." She called out her name frantically over and over, praying that Wenxi had run away on her own, but Wenxi did not respond.

Not far away, a large hole was torn in the barbed wire fence that was full of roses, and the delicate rose petals fell to the ground. Someone may have come from this direction and taken Wenxi away.

She climbed up the tower again. The dead soldiers had turned into aliens and were wandering around. She stood where Du Lu had just been and looked around. Finally, she saw a group of aliens heading south.

Although she couldn't see Wenxi's figure, she had a feeling that Wenxi was inside.

At that moment, intermittent calls came from the control tower; they were human voices.

"Tower 5, please respond." The other party kept calling.

She jumped back in and said into the communicator, "This is Tower 5. We are under attack by aliens."

"Luo Ning." Lu Xinghe immediately took the microphone upon hearing her voice.

Luo Ning paused for a moment, then tears welled up in her eyes, but she quickly held them back: "Lu Xinghe, I lost Wen Xi. I'm going to look for her now. I'll start from the control tower and head due south. If... if you're still willing to help, I'll mark the way."

"No, you stay where you are and wait for me to come." Lu Xinghe didn't want her to take any risks.

Luo Ning wiped the blood from her face: "Don't worry, I'm just following to check the situation. I won't do anything rash. Besides, you forgot, there aren't many alien species that can keep up with my speed."

“Okay, leave your mark and bring your communicator. I will definitely come to find you,” Lu Xinghe said firmly.

"Yes." She nodded; she now had armor and a backup.

Back on the plane, she took the remaining bullets, then casually picked up the water bottle and drank it. After a few sips, her sense of taste, which had been filled with blood, finally returned, and she realized that she had been drinking Wenxi's lemonade.

But the discomfort I expected didn't happen; instead, I felt a thirst-quenching sensation.

Without much thought, she jumped off the plane nimbly after her leg wound healed and headed in the direction where the alien species had disappeared.
