Chapter 4 Salt is the King of All Flavors

Su Xuanhe opened his mouth wide and stared at the small stream of water slowly pouring out of the jar. He originally thought that the water would spill everywhere.

But the water flow seemed to be cast by some magical spell, turning along the chopsticks, passing through the wood ash sandbag stuck in the mouth of the other jar, and flowing into the jar.

"How did the water run to the side?" The child was very curious and was about to let go of the hands holding the jar and sandbag, wanting to touch the "magic chopsticks".

Seeing this, Su Qingluan quickly stopped using her chopsticks to drain the water: "Hold on steady and don't move!"

"Then tell me how the water ran away?"

Su Qingluan rolled her eyes inwardly. "Come on, how do I explain this?" Should I start teaching physics lessons about liquid surface tension and surface free energy? It was obvious that this was impossible.

She glanced at her second brother, who leaned forward with his entire face, nervously holding his breath, and said in a mysterious tone, "I, your sister, have the ability to make these waters behave."

This statement is correct to a certain extent, but it omits some content and reverses some cause and effect relationships.

I had thought Su Xiaoer would get mad again after hearing this obviously perfunctory excuse. Unexpectedly, the little guy looked at Su Qingluan with admiration, then nodded seriously and continued to do his odd jobs.

Su Qingluan reflected on this behavior of deceiving innocent children for a second, and then decisively believed that what she did was absolutely right.

It is easy for children to develop admiration for others because of inexplicable little things - such as being able to whistle, picking up a beautiful leaf, or even being able to spit saliva far away.

And "making the water flow into the jar obediently" obviously falls into this category for little Su Xuanhe.

This feeling of "worship" made the little troublemaker very well-behaved for a while. And when he saw the originally turbid and dirty muddy water become clear and transparent after being filtered through the wood ash, this feeling of worship was further strengthened.

The evidence is that when the third sister Xueyan came to play with her brother, Su Xuanhe didn't immediately make an excuse to slip away. Instead, he said without turning his head, "I'm helping my eldest sister with work. You can play by yourself for a while."

Su Qingluan said that the sensible little follower was very useful.

So the little girl curled up into a small ball and squatted beside them, watching her brothers and sisters tinkering with bottles and jars.

Two days later, during the evening feeding, Su Guangfu looked at Yang, who was smiling particularly happily. He also looked at the rare wild vegetable meatball soup he had prepared today, and asked in a low voice, "Is today a festival?"

Although there was only one more dish, meatball soup, for ordinary farmers like the Su family, it was a "big dish" that was only available during the New Year.

Yang couldn't suppress the smile on her face. She placed five bowls of meatball soup on the table one by one, then raised her voice and asked towards the kitchen, "Daya, are you still not done? It's time for dinner!"

Although their names were changed, the Yang couple had obviously gotten used to it, so they used the original names of the three siblings as their nicknames and never deliberately changed them.

Su Qingluan responded by lifting the curtain and bringing out a plate of mixed three kinds of vegetables - pickled radish, bean sprouts and young stems of wild vegetables.

Su Guangfu looked at the three shredded vegetables his eldest daughter brought up. They looked plain and unremarkable. Moreover, in his opinion, Su Qingluan had always been raised in luxury, so it would be difficult for her to prepare such a simple meal.

Thinking of this, Su Guangfu nodded in encouragement.

Su Qingluan lowered her head and smiled: "Mother cut the shredded radish and wild vegetables, and I made the seasoning."

Yang joked, "I know you want to help me, but the skill of cutting vegetables is not something you can develop overnight. I'm afraid you'll cut your fingers if you cut too deep or too shallow. But I'm very happy that you're thoughtful."

Su Qingluan nodded obediently.

In fact, with her real knife skills, not only could she shred ordinary radish, but she could even cut Wensi tofu into thin slices as thin as silver threads. But as Yang said, how could someone who had never learned cooking have such proficiency in knife skills?

Although Su Guangfu and his wife were simple-minded, they were not fools. She occasionally learned some interesting anecdotes from reading books, but cooking, a skill that required time and effort to hone, could not be acquired through such irrelevant nonsense.

Su Xuanhe and Su Xueyan had been playing all afternoon and were hungry. As soon as everyone else was at the table, they eagerly grabbed their bowls of meatball soup and gulped it down.

After drinking just two sips, Xueyan stopped and took another sip of the soup: "Mom! Today's broth tastes better than usual!"

Su Xuanhe also nodded: "Meatballs are also more delicious!"

Adults' senses of taste aren't as sensitive as children's, but Su Guangfu did notice that the broth today lacked that inexplicably bitter taste compared to previous broths. He turned to look at Yang, whose smile was barely visible. "Mother, don't keep me in suspense. What did you do?"

"It's not me who has the solution." Yang said, nodding in Su Qingluan's direction, "It's our eldest daughter who has the solution!"

Seeing that everyone in the family was looking at her, Su Qingluan started to keep them in suspense. Smiling, she pushed the dishes she had just brought towards them and said, "Dad, Mom, let's not talk about the meatball soup first. How about this mixed vegetable?"

Yang glanced at Qingluan, then at her husband, and said with a smile, "Oh, kid, what's up?" As she said that, she and Su Guangfu picked up a piece of mixed vegetable with chopsticks and put it in their mouths.

After chewing for a few times, Yang and her husband looked at each other, their eyes flashing with surprise. They quickly called out to the other two children: "Erzhuang and Sanya, come and try your eldest sister's cooking!"

Su Qingluan smiled and said, "Dad, Mom, how is it? Is this mixed vegetable dish acceptable?"
