Just as the first pancake came out of the pan, Su Guangfu and Yang came in one after another.
As soon as she stepped into the yard, Yang raised her nose and sniffed: "Big girl, are we having pancakes today?" There was no mistaking the burnt and fragrant smell of the noodles.
Su Xuanhe poked his head out: "Why are Dad and Mom back together today?" Yang was going to take a batch of cotton gloves she had just made to the market to sell, and Su Guangfu had taken on another job repairing a house, and went to work with a few co-workers early in the morning.
Yang smiled and said, "It's a coincidence. We just met at the intersection ahead." Then she followed Su Qingluan into the kitchen.
Then she saw that the person making pancakes was not her eldest daughter as she had imagined, but her second son.
"Su Erzhuang? Why are you learning to cook?" Yang looked very surprised, and even turned back to look up to see if there was any red rain falling from the sky.
Then, as if she had discovered some new world, she called out to Su Guangfu, "Dad, come and see, who is making the pancakes today?"
Although Su Guangfu was not as exaggerated as Yang, he was also very surprised.
Su Xuanhe had been counting silently in his mind, following the steps Su Qingluan had told him, fearing that the pancake he had finally finished at the last step would turn into "charcoal". When he heard his father and mother sighing behind him, he felt embarrassed and nervous, his mind went blank and he completely forgot where he had counted to.
"Sister, please tell Dad and Mom to go out and don't disturb me while I'm making pancakes!"
Su Qingluan chuckled: "You do have a lot of problems." She winked and asked her father and mother to follow her out. Anyway, she had already turned down the heat for her pot of mutton soup. She had taken advantage of the break to mince the mutton and the tripe and intestines given to her to make a pot of mutton soup.
Now it just needs to be simmered over low heat, so Su Qingluan turned and left the kitchen. She told Su Guangfu and Yang that Su Xuanhe had overturned Xi Niangzi's pancake stall when he returned home because he was released from school early today.
"What an unlucky child!" Yang stamped her feet and subconsciously wanted to pick up the broom, but Su Guangfu and Su Qingluan held her back from the left and right.
"Don't just ignore it when you get angry," Su Guangfu advised, "the child is still working inside."
"What kind of work are you doing? You're just pretending!" Yang said unhappily.
Su Qingluan shook her head: "Mother, you are really wronging my brother. Although I was watching over him today, he did everything by himself from kneading the dough to making the pancakes just now." Su Qingluan's tone was a little sad: to be honest, she herself did not expect that her brother could make pancakes so honestly.
Moreover, Su Qingluan's mention of "twenty or thirty pancakes" was just a casual remark, and she didn't really intend to let her brother make pancakes with all the flour.
She had even prepared herself for the possibility that Su Xuanhe would play rogue from the very beginning and she would have to do it herself in the end - mainly because winter was getting closer and closer. Although the Su family had prepared a lot of winter vegetables, there was almost no storage of staple food.
However, pancakes, which have a harder texture and require careful baking, are a good choice for long-term storage.
Unexpectedly, this little guy Su Xuanhe really had some perseverance. Instead of cheating, he persisted.
"Mother, my brother's cooking skills are quite good. Don't you want to try it later?" Su Qingluan said with a smile.
About half an hour later, the mutton soup was ready. Su Qingluan sprinkled cilantro in it to enhance the flavor. Green leafy vegetables were rare at this time of year. However, Su Qingluan had the foresight to move these cilantro into the house while the temperature was still warm. Therefore, the Su family could still see a little green for the time being.
The relatively more abundant vegetables at this time are basically cabbage, radish, and some pickled vegetables and dried mushrooms stored for winter.
The Su family did have some foreign vegetables like carrots and onions—though some people couldn't get used to the taste of these vegetables, which seemed a bit strange. Furthermore, foreign vegetables were more expensive than Sheng Dynasty vegetables, so even though they were easier to store in winter, not many people were interested in them.
But Su Qingluan understood that these vegetables were important vitamin supplements when food was scarce in winter - even if the taste was a bit strange to many people.
Su Qingluan was surprised and delighted that none of Su Xuanhe's pancakes were burnt. However, Su Xuanhe leaned exhaustedly against his sister's back and said, "I have to count them non-stop every time. I dare not stop or think about anything else, for fear that the pancakes will burn and ruin everything. It's really tiring—but are these pancakes really layered?"
"Can you take a look for yourself after I cut it open later?" Su Qingluan said, cutting the five round pancakes into four pieces in a cross shape to form ninety-degree fans. Su Xuanhe couldn't wait to take out one of the pieces and uncover it: "Huh? It's really layered!" Su Xuanhe said in surprise, as if he had discovered a new continent.
And he raised his nose and sniffed: there was a fragrance!
Su Qingluan took in her brother's movements and smiled. "The salt and pepper powder you just applied with the soybean oil are the source of this fragrance."
This kind of pancake has a salt and pepper aroma. Even without any side dishes, you can eat two or three of them!
Su Xuanhe breathed a sigh of relief: "Sister, this pancake looks delicious!"
Su Qingluan laughed: "Well, it does look delicious."
Su Xuanhe looked at Su Qingluan with sparkling eyes: "This is the pancake I made!"
Su Qingluan looked at her brother's face full of praise and nodded heavily: "My brother is really amazing. He can make such delicious pancakes!"
