Although Madam Shangguan felt that her daughter could not possibly have someone she liked, she found Shangguan Boyan's words to be reasonable, so she nodded in agreement.
That evening, after dinner, Shangguan Yanran couldn't wait to sneak back to her room, intending to stay up all night reading the storybooks and picture books she had collected.
However, just as she opened the picture book, there was a knock on the door.
"Yanran, are you asleep?"
"Mother?" Shangguan Yanran was stunned for a moment, then realized what was happening, hurriedly hid the picture book, and then got up to open the door.
"Have you fallen asleep?" Madam Shangguan asked with a smile as she stood outside the door.
"No, I was just about to go to sleep," Shangguan Yanran said somewhat guiltily, hugging her arm. "Mother, please come in first."
Madam Shangguan nodded and stepped inside.
"Mother, you've come to see me so late, is there something you need?" Shangguan Yanran asked.
Looking at her graceful daughter, Madam Shangguan felt a sense of satisfaction. She took her hand and sat down with her on the edge of the bed. "No, I just wanted to chat with you."
Upon hearing this, Shangguan Yanran didn't think much of it and sat down next to her mother.
"What does Mother want to talk to me about?"
Madam Shangguan turned her head to look at her daughter, whose face was as beautiful as a flower. She paused for a moment before saying, "Yanran, you are sixteen years old this year. You have reached the age to be married. Tell your mother what kind of man you like so that your mother can pay attention."
Shangguan Yanran was taken aback and looked at her suspiciously. "Isn't Mother still worried about Fu Rongchen's marriage? Why did she think of her daughter?"
Upon hearing this, Madam Shangguan poked her forehead in annoyance, "You silly girl, how can you be so disrespectful, calling your brother Rong Chen by his given name? Besides, when have I ever neglected you?"
Shangguan Yanran wrinkled her nose. "I only said this in private."
Madam Shangguan sighed and said helplessly, "It's strange, really. Your brother Rong Chen doesn't refuse to arrange marriages for you, but he hasn't been satisfied with any of the girls he's seen. I've thought about it a lot, and I think it's probably because he doesn't want to refuse me from arranging marriages for him, so he lets me find them for him. So I've come to terms with it, and I'm not going to interfere in his affairs anymore."
Upon hearing this, Shangguan Yanran was taken aback. "You're not going to arrange a marriage for him anymore?"
Madam Shangguan nodded. "Never mind. Come to think of it, I was being nosy. His parents are both alive and well, why should I overstep my bounds?"
Shangguan Yanran actually knew that the reason her mother arranged a marriage for Fu Rongchen was because the two elders of the Fu family were incompetent, and her mother liked Fu Rongchen so much that she bypassed the two elders and arranged the marriage for him.
"Mother, don't think like that. Uncle and Aunt Fu are overjoyed that someone is helping them arrange their son's marriage."
"Forget it, I don't want to get involved anymore." Madam Shangguan waved her hand. "Right now, my daughter's marriage is the most important thing."
"Mother, please stop talking. I don't want to get married. I want to stay by your and Father's side for the rest of my life." Shangguan Yanran hugged her arm and shook it gently.
Madam Shangguan's heart softened instantly. "What nonsense are you talking about, girl? What woman doesn't get married?"
"What's so great about getting married? It's better to be alone," Shangguan Yanran said dismissively.
Madam Shangguan was somewhat at a loss with her.
This daughter has always been strong-willed since childhood, and her thoughts and ideas are different from those of ordinary women.
"You are on good terms with the Empress, who has been married for several months and may become a mother next year. Your marriage is still unsettled. Aren't you anxious? Aren't you envious of her?"
Shangguan Yanran sighed, "I'm not in a hurry, but I do envy her relationship with the Emperor."
