Chapter 236 The So-Called Truth

"Dad, why did you call Jingzhi and me back?"

Xu Guang glanced at Nan Zhi and Xu Chaoci, then asked.

Old Master Xu's gaze fell on Xu Guang and Xu Jingzhi, and he said earnestly:

"There's something I've been keeping from you, and it's related to the car accident our family had."

As soon as Old Xu finished speaking, Xu Guang and Xu Jingzhi were both drawn to him. Wasn't this matter clear back then? Was there something they didn't know?

Xu Jing glanced at Nan Zhi subconsciously. Her eyes were calm and still as she sat quietly, watching Old Xu.

Old Xu sighed and decided not to hide it any longer.

"Jingzhi, you already knew about your father and aunt's affair. You both knew about it."

Xu Jingzhi nodded. It was because his father liked his aunt that his parents died, which is why he could never let go of his resentment towards Nanzhi.

“Back then, my husband and I tried so many methods, but in the end, it was that girl herself who proposed to marry someone from the capital. We thought that would be the end of it, and that our eldest son would give up. But he was stubborn and kept going to the capital, which caused a lot of unpleasantness with Jingzhi’s mother. This matter became a family scandal for the Xu family. We did a lot of work to persuade our eldest son, but that girl was just too stubborn.”

As he spoke, tears welled up in Old Xu's eyes as he looked at Nanzhi.

“That time, it was my birthday. Your mother, as my daughter, came back to celebrate with me. She was supposed to go back to the capital, but before she even left, Jingzhi’s parents had a fight because of your mother. In a fit of anger, your aunt left the Xu family.”

“I still remember it. It was raining heavily that day. Your mother was supposed to go to the airport that night. After your aunt left, she felt guilty and stayed behind to help find Jingzhi’s mother.”

With such heavy rain at the time, everyone was worried about where to look. So your mother persuaded your eldest uncle to go look for her, and he and Yao Yao's mother got into that car.

We all know that the car crashed on the road because of slippery conditions, killing three people instantly, but what we don't know is...

At this point, Old Xu was filled with grief. "But little did he know, this car was specially prepared for your mother. Your grandmother had no choice but to do it. She didn't want to see the family become a mess. She thought that if she hadn't picked up your mother from the beach, none of this would have happened, and the Xu family wouldn't have been involved in this scandal. That's why she had someone tamper with the car. Who knew that Jingzhi's father and Yaoyao's mother would die in the car accident as well?"

The people present were all taken aback, unaware that there was such a story behind it.

Old Xu lowered his head. "After the car accident, my wife was devastated. She felt that she had caused the deaths of her son, daughter-in-law, and daughter. She fell ill and never recovered. Only my wife and I knew about this, and we didn't plan to tell anyone. When Jingzhi's mother heard about it, she thought that if she hadn't run away, they wouldn't have gone looking for her and she would have died in the car accident. So she went to the seaside and committed suicide. From then on, my Xu family was destroyed. My wife didn't last long either."

As he finished speaking, Old Xu couldn't help but choke up, lamenting, "What a tragedy!"

Xu Jingzhi could hardly believe it. His eyes widened. So, in the end, the deaths of his parents were all because his grandmother wanted to cause an accident to happen to his aunt, which led to all of this happening by a series of unfortunate coincidences.

So who has he been resenting all this time, and who has he been hurting?

My aunt was also a victim.

Hearing these words, Nan Zhixin felt nothing but grief, heartache for her mother, and anger.

"So, my mother was killed by her mother?"

Nanzhi tilted her head, her eyes red, and asked, "This was all a premeditated murder."

Nan Zhi could imagine how her mother would feel if she knew about this. If Bai Ya Rou was plotting to kill her, one could only imagine how she would feel.

Once you've given your heart, it's really hard to take it back. But she never imagined that her mother's death was caused by the very person she had called "Mom" for so many years.

Old Xu nodded, "The old woman regretted it. She felt guilty and remorseful, and in the end, she died in depression."

Nan Zhi's eyes welled with tears as she took a deep breath. "She regrets it? If she regrets it, why did she do it in the first place? Does she think that twenty years of raising her is so insignificant? Have you ever thought about my mother? She knew she wasn't your Xu family's biological child, yet she was forced to marry far away and ended up with nothing. Her own mother even wanted her dead. That kind of sorrow and helplessness—have you ever thought about her? Just because she was adopted, you blame everything on her. On what grounds? Because of the debt of raising her?"

Nan Zhi sneered, "That's right, you raised her, but you also personally robbed her of the family affection she cared about, and in the end, you even took her life. Such a debt of gratitude for raising you is worse than having none at all."

At this point, Nanzhi stood up abruptly, holding back her tears. She felt sorry for her mother, felt wronged for her, and felt sad for her.

Ultimately, Old Xu's concealment was for the sake of his family, but it also caused others to harbor resentment towards his deceased mother, which is heartbreaking.

In retrospect, the rest of the Xu family did nothing wrong; they were simply unaware of the situation.

Seeing the expressions on Xu Guang and Xu Jingzhi's faces, Nan Zhi could imagine the shock they felt.

Even so, she truly didn't want to have anything to do with the Xu family anymore.

“Your Xu family is a prestigious family in Yuecheng, but my mother is a scandal in your eyes. She should not exist in this world at all. As her daughter, I am naturally not worthy of your Xu family. From now on, I, Nanzhi, have nothing to do with your Xu family in Yuecheng.”

Nan Zhi spoke these words with force and conviction. Originally, she had no connection with the Xu family, but they maintained a superficial relationship, as it was her mother's former home. But now, this matter was essentially the last line of defense.

What pained her was not anything else, but the fact that the old lady of the Xu family actually wanted her mother dead, and the reason was so absurd and ridiculous: Xu Jingzhi's father was infatuated with her mother and could not extricate himself, which disgraced the Xu family.

Old Xu and Xu Jingzhi looked at Nanzhi in shock.

"Zhizhi, you......."

Nanzhi looked at the sorrowful old man and said:

“Grandpa, no, Mr. Xu, please allow me to call you that. This is a matter I have thought about carefully, and I think my mother agrees with me doing this. After all, it was your Xu family who took her life with their own hands.”

Old Xu's face turned pale. He knew that revealing the truth would not end well. Sure enough, Zhizhi would still resent them.

Oh, what a terrible tragedy!

"Cousin, we can discuss this again. Don't act impulsively."
