Chapter 251 Dealing with Snakes

"How could it be gone?" Yuwen Ran didn't expect Gu Yanyue to react so strongly when she heard the snake was gone. Gu Yanyue strode over to Yuwen Ran and said, "Aran, go pick it up quickly. I still have a use for it!"

Finally, Gu Yanyue added: "But, if you pick it up, don't put it in front of me. I will teach you how to deal with it."

When Yuwen Ran followed Gu Yanyue's instructions and dug the snake's body out of the grass pile, Gu Yanyue had already turned her back. When she heard the movement coming from Yuwen Ran, she asked, "Have you found it?"

Yuwen Ran once again picked up the snake's corpse. It wasn't right to go over there, nor was it right to just stand there like a puddle. He wanted to nod at Gu Yanyue, but he realized that Gu Yanyue had her back turned away, so he couldn't see what he was doing. He could only respond, "Yes, I've found it. Ah Yue, are you planning to eat this snake?"

It's no wonder Yuwen Ran asked such a question. Now Gu Yanyue and he were trapped in this cave by the group of men in black, unable to get out. Yuwen Ran had only a few mushrooms left from yesterday, and the only thing left to eat was this snake.

Gu Yanyue snapped his fingers and praised: "Smart! But it's not just for us to eat, but also for those people outside." When Gu Yanyue said this, he kept Yu Wenran in suspense.

As soon as Gu Yanyue saw the snake, she knew it wasn't venomous. Now that she and Yuwen Ran were trapped in this cave, it was a perfect opportunity to put it to good use. Furthermore, if she and Yuwen Ran were to escape successfully, they would likely rely on this snake.

Although this snake isn't poisonous, some of the mushrooms Yuwen Ran picked yesterday were poisonous! Yuwen Ran knew her best, having anticipated yesterday that she might continue to use poison to protect herself. He had even specially picked so many poisonous mushrooms for her. She had to make good use of them and not let Yuwen Ran's efforts go to waste.

Yu Wenran didn't ask any further. Since Gu Yanyue had said so, she must have her own reasons. "Then what should I do now?"

"First, remove the snake's gallbladder and internal organs, and then peel the skin." Gu Yanyue said to Yu Wenran while looking for dry branches, "When you're done, remember to wash it with water. Then, when I light the fire, you can start roasting it."

"Okay." Yu Wenran responded and took the dagger to do what Gu Yanyue had just told him.

Gu Yanyue found a branch that hadn't been wetted by the rain. She had some skills in making fire, unlike Yuwen Ran who took several hours to start a fire yesterday. Before Yuwen Ran had even finished cleaning the snake's internal organs, Gu Yanyue had already started the fire.

After lighting the fire, Gu Yanyue wasn't idle either. She used what she had on hand to make a simple pot, intending to use it to distill rainwater. After all, she and Yuwen Ran had been in this cave for so long, and except for drinking some water in the carriage yesterday, they hadn't touched water since then. Gu Yanyue looked at the cave ceiling, which was still leaking, and thought to herself: This rain came at the perfect time, giving her and Yuwen Ran the opportunity to quench their thirst.

She had studied science in high school, so she was pretty familiar with distilling water. It might be a little tricky now, though, because she didn't have any ice nearby. But it was already snowing here, and the temperature was probably around freezing, so it shouldn't be too difficult.

Gu Yanyue made two pots, one large and one small. She then constructed a simple hanging basket, which she would attach the pots to and heat over the fire she had just started. After she was ready, she used the large pot to collect the rainwater that had just leaked out. It was full, about eight cups the size of a typical drinking glass, and then she stopped collecting water.

The less water you use to make distilled water, the easier it is to operate and the less time it takes to make it. If you're quick with eight cups of water, you can make it in about half an hour.

Then, Gu Yanyue placed the smaller pot inside the larger one, letting it float on the surface. The key to circulating steam within the larger pot is airflow, ensuring there is ample space around the smaller pot and between the sides and the top of the larger pot.

Next, just keep the heat at medium-high. Avoid boiling the water, and ideally keep it between 80 and 90 degrees Celsius. A chef with a decent grasp of this temperature shouldn't be a problem.

Because there was no ice, Gu Yanyue could only use cooling instead. Fortunately, she finally succeeded in making distilled water. Gu Yanyue lifted the lid and saw that all the water dripping into the smaller pot was distilled water, which looked to be about two and a half cups of water.

Yu Wenran had already dealt with the snake's corpse. Seeing Gu Yanyue with his back to him, he didn't know what he was busy with. After he washed off the smell of blood on his body, he went over to him.

Seeing that Gu Yanyue had just received a lot of water, but after about half an hour, it was reduced to less than half of what it had been, he couldn't help but feel a little curious. He squatted beside Gu Yanyue and asked, "Ayue, why is there so much less water when you open it after you put the water in to heat it?"

Gu Yanyue didn't expect Yuwen Ran to ask such a cute question. She smiled and explained to Yuwen Ran: "I'm not adding hot water, I'm making distilled water. Adding hot water is different from distilled water." Gu Yanyue also explained to Yuwen Ran how to make this distilled water.

Yu Wenran nodded repeatedly after hearing this. He didn't know what Gu Yanyue couldn't do. He always felt that Gu Yanyue could do everything.

After Yuwen Ran told Gu Yanyue about his idea, Gu Yanyue just smiled and said nothing, then taught Yuwen Ran how to roast the snake.

"First, cut the snake into small pieces. Then, put the meat on the skewers I've sharpened and grill it here."

Yu Wenran cut the snake according to the method taught by Gu Yanyue and handed it to Gu Yanyue. Gu Yanyue looked at the snake that had been completely disfigured and finally put aside her fear. She roasted it as ordinary meat.

If the snake meat was roasted alone, it would not taste very good. So Gu Yanyue ground the mushrooms that tasted good yesterday into juice and spread it on the snake meat, hoping to use the fresh fragrance of the mushrooms to cover up the fishy smell of the snake meat.

Gu Yanyue's hands kept turning over the campfire, and soon the snake meat was roasted by Gu Yanyue until it was fragrant and tender.
