Chapter 71: Shocking

After talking about it, the three of them rarely got together, so they had a meal together warmly.

Not long after that, Zhou Zhi found an opportunity to propose to Lin Yuanyuan in a romantic way. After getting their marriage certificate, the two experienced another sweet moment. They worked even harder, and a few years later, their joint venture expanded beyond China and into the international market.

They all gained honor, fame, power, and wealth, but what followed was not "the prince and princess lived happily ever after," but rather pervasive danger.

Both of them are ambitious and their parents are relatively open-minded, so they haven't had children in the years since they got married. Occasionally, some tactless people will make sarcastic remarks, but neither of them is petty. They just laugh it off.

That year, the company was preparing to go public, and the couple had agreed to start trying to conceive after the listing. However, while they were evaluating whether the company could meet the listing standards, someone set their sights on their money.

It was an ordinary afternoon. After get off work, Zhou Zhi drove to a cake shop three blocks away from the company as usual to buy a small cake for Lin Yuanyuan.

Then it was gone forever.

Lin Yuanyuan was the first to notice Zhou Zhi was missing. Over the years since their marriage, they still maintained the rituals of their courtship, occasionally exchanging flowers, buying a small cake, going to the movies together, and so on.

Before leaving work that day, Zhou Zhi sent Lin Yuanyuan a message saying he'd stop by to buy a cake. But after waiting for a long time, Zhou Zhi never came home. Feeling inexplicably anxious, Lin Yuanyuan called Zhou Zhi. Sure enough, the call didn't go through.

A missing person must have been missing for at least 24 hours before a case could be filed. Without a second thought, Lin Yuanyuan called the Public Security Bureau chief, who was familiar with the two. Having grown up in the area and built a large business, Lin Yuanyuan and Zhou Zhi had always had good relationships with government officials. It wasn't about getting shortcuts or anything like that; it was simply normal business-government relations. It was simply that they paid so much tax each year that public officials were willing to give them some favors in minor matters.

When the police chief heard that Zhou Zhi might have been in an accident, he immediately ordered his subordinates to check the surveillance footage to see what Zhou Zhi had done after work. He also asked someone to locate Zhou Zhi's phone.

However, before the Public Security Bureau could find any results, Lin Yuanyuan received a call from the "kidnappers", claiming that Zhou Zhi was in their hands and asked Lin Yuanyuan to prepare 50 million yuan for ransom.

Lin Yuanyuan was panicking, but she knew she couldn't retreat. Zhou Zhi was still waiting for her to rescue him! So she gathered her nerves and dealt with the criminal for a while before hanging up the phone to contact her closest friends and family. Both sets of parents, including Mr. Jing, had received the news. Of course, the police had also received the news.

The next few days were like hell for Lin Yuanyuan. With the support of the police and her family and friends, she bargained with the criminals and eventually settled on a ransom of 20 million yuan in cash.

Then, under the instructions of the criminals, she put the money in a secluded mountain cabin.

The police waited near the hut for a whole day and night, but saw no sign of the kidnappers coming to collect the ransom. They then slowly approached the hut and found Zhou Zhi tied up inside.

It turned out that there was a secret passage in the hut that led directly to the foot of the mountain on the other side. The kidnappers took the money through this secret passage and returned it to Zhou Zhi.

Zhou Zhi was not in a very good condition. He had bruises all over his body and his wrists and ankles were bleeding from being tied with ropes. He was not in a very good mental state either and looked a little dazed.

No one knew what had happened to Zhou Zhi during those days of captivity. His injuries weren't serious, and he quickly regained consciousness after being rushed to the hospital. However, upon waking, he lost his usual gentleness and politeness, becoming taciturn and trembling with fear.

Occasionally, he would be in high spirits and talk to Lin Yuanyuan, but most of the time, he seemed to have been drained of his soul, a hollow shell, with no reaction or interest in the outside world.

After returning home from the hospital, he felt somewhat better, but still listless. It was clear the kidnapping had left a deep scar on him. Lin Yuanyuan wanted to stay with him, but she still had to manage the company and recover the lost money. She had no choice but to return to the office.

Zhou Zhi was at home alone, which was quite good. He would just sit there, read, listen to music, play with his cat, and occasionally go for a walk in the nearby park. But the smile that used to be on his face was gone, and he didn't talk much. He just sat there most of the time.

His family knew he had mental problems and sought treatment from a psychiatrist, but it wasn't very effective. Days passed, and just when Lin Yuanyuan thought things would continue like this, Zhou Zhi disappeared again.

This time the discovery was made a little late. By the time Lin Yuanyuan received the news, the kidnappers had already made a ransom call to her home. This time they directly demanded 100 million yuan and would not accept any bargaining.

After Zhou Zhi's illness, Lin Yuanyuan has been in charge of the company. Perhaps because of her more radical and bold ideas, or perhaps because she's capitalizing on the industry's current momentum, Lin Yuanyuan's business has grown steadily over the past few years. Although the company chose not to go public due to the kidnapping incident, its value has continued to rise.

When people have money, not only do they become bad themselves, but it also easily arouses the greed in others. I don't know if the kidnappers who were not caught last time got a taste of success, or if others got inspired by the last incident, but in any case, Zhou Zhi was kidnapped again.

Zhou Zhi's condition has been poor in recent years, and his relationship with Lin Yuanyuan seems to be less close than before. However, Lin Yuanyuan's love for Zhou Zhi has never changed, so this time she continued to deal with the kidnappers several times and raised a huge amount of money, which was transferred to an overseas bank account as requested by the kidnappers.
