Chapter Eighty: A Show of Force

"This is absolutely outrageous!"

Li Youran gripped the letter tightly in her hand and said fiercely.

If you don't want others to know, then don't do it in the first place. On the day of the arson, although it was a dark and windy night with very few pedestrians on the road, it was still discovered by the night watchman.

Li Erzhu and the other three, unable to endure the hardship, confessed everything before any torture was even used. However, Wang Xiangyu stubbornly denied everything, and there was no direct evidence. Furthermore, since Lu Chuan was now a successful candidate in the imperial examinations, it was not advisable to investigate further.

Helpless, they could only pin the blame on Li Erzhu. Li Dazhu was a soft-hearted man and couldn't bear to see Li Erzhu suffer such a crime. Thinking that he would suffer even more in prison, he withdrew the charges and did not pursue the matter any further.

Zhao Lanzhi was furious, so she wrote a letter to Li Youran.

In the letter, Zhao Lanzhi also mentioned Lu Chuan and Wang Xiangyu's family, who would soon be heading to the capital.

"Miss, is there anything you need?"

Li Youran beckoned to the servant, who leaned closer. After receiving Li Youran's instructions, the servant hurriedly nodded and quickly left.

Li Youran has always adhered to the principle of "I will not offend others unless they offend me, but if they do offend me, I will never forgive them!"

Since Wang Xiangyu has repeatedly challenged her bottom line, she will teach Wang Xiangyu a lesson.

"I raised you from infancy, and now that you've become successful, you start to despise your old mother for being useless. You and your family can go to the capital and live your good lives, while your father and I are left here to grow old alone!"

As Old Lady Lu spoke, snot flew from her nose, and she didn't care about her appearance. Some of the hairpins on her head even fell off. She lay on the ground and continued to cry.

"Your father and I are just superfluous, old codgers. Only when we die will you have peace and quiet. We haven't even entered our coffins yet, and we're already being disliked by our son. Who knows what will happen to us when we can no longer move!"

Old Mrs. Lu's insults were very harsh, but even so, Lu Chuan did not respond at all.

After learning that Lu Chuan planned to go to the capital, Old Lady Lu was overjoyed and began preparing her things. However, she was unexpectedly met with a cold shower: Lu Chuan didn't intend to take her with him to the capital. This angered Old Lady Lu.

"Mom, the family business can't do without you, not to mention that my eldest brother and sister-in-law also need to go to the shop to help out, and the two children still need you to take care of them."

Lu Chuan said with a gloomy face.

"It's not that we don't want you to go to the capital, but that you don't need to go for the time being. After Xiangyu has a baby, you can go there to help take care of your grandson."

Lu Chuan's words were merely a delaying tactic; Lu Chuan was determined this time and did not want to take his wife to the capital.

He knew his own mother very well. If he took her to the capital, he was afraid he would lose face and cause all sorts of trouble.

Speaking of getting into trouble, Lu Chuan felt a headache coming on. Wang Xiangyu, for some reason, clung to Li Youran like a mad dog.

Even though he buried his feelings for Li Youran deep within himself and never revealed them to Wang Xiangyu, Wang Xiangyu still couldn't get along with Youran.

Just now, she even set fire to Li Youran's bookstore. Thinking about this, Lu Chuan had a real headache. If it weren't for the child, he wouldn't bother with her at all.

“Ah Lang, Grandma knows you’ve always had this knot in your heart. Li Youran is your savior, but Grandma…”

As she spoke, Aunt Tian sighed, wiped her hands on her apron, and then looked at her grandson who was reading a book beside her and continued.

"Grandma has already gone to the Li family to apologize. What Grandma did before was indeed wrong."

Upon hearing Aunt Li's words, Tian Alang finally looked up at Aunt Li.

To be honest, Tian Alang did care about this matter, but not out of personal feelings. It was because he felt that his grandmother's actions were unkind. After all, she was his savior, yet she saw him as so despicable and even scolded him to his face.

"Grandma, I just feel that doing this is not kind enough."

Tian Alang knew that if he brought up his relationship with Li Youran, his grandmother would definitely turn hostile again.

He didn't want to upset his grandmother, and he felt that it was already quite an achievement for her to do so much, so he simply didn't bring it up again.

"Good child, all these years of studying have not been in vain. Remember, no matter when or where you go, always be a grateful and conscientious person."

Aunt Tian was indeed deeply aware of her mistake, and seeing her grandson say this, the knot in her heart was completely untied.

But after all, her grandson was a kind and righteous person, a good child, so Madam Tian stopped dwelling on the matter.

"Routine inspection!"

Lu Chuan and Wang Xiangyu were sitting in the carriage, about to pass through the city gate, when they were stopped.

"Sir, you've had a long journey."

Lu Chuan, being quite astute, slipped a few taels of silver to the soldiers guarding the city. He believed that the reason their carriages were stopped and impounded was because they hadn't given them a bribe.

"Don't give me that. We are just upholding the law and are completely impartial."

The soldier shoved Lu Chuan aside, then forcibly lifted the curtain of the carriage, forcing Lu Chuan and Wang Xiangyu off the carriage.

"Sir, those are all personal items."

Although Wang Xiangyu was afraid, she felt even more embarrassed because the bundle the soldier was about to untie contained all her personal belongings.

"You think I enjoy looking at your junk? It's just a routine matter."

As the guards spoke, they untied the bundle, and various of Wang Xiangyu's personal belongings spilled out onto the cart, some even falling to the ground.
