Chapter Ninety-Nine: The Results of the Imperial Examination

"It's me."

The candlelight in the room was extremely dim, but Li Youran could still clearly see Tang Lei's bright red face.

Let alone Tang Lei, even Li Youran, who had forward-thinking ideas, felt somewhat embarrassed...

"I didn't know you were taking a shower, so..." Tang Lei, who was usually aloof, stammered as he spoke.

"Don't worry, I will definitely take responsibility for you."

"Um... could you turn around first and let me change my clothes..."

Li Youran had no interest in listening to what Tang Lei was saying. He just felt all wet and uncomfortable, and with the window open, a cold wind was blowing in, which made goosebumps rise on his arms.

"oh……"

Upon hearing Li Youran's words, Tang Lei's face turned even redder, the redness extending all the way to the back of his ears.

Perhaps a little too confused, Tang Lei jumped out of the window again.

"He'd rather go through the window than the door; what a strange person."

While expressing her disdain for Tang Lei, Li Youran crossed her arms and walked to the window, closing it tightly.

She hurriedly dried herself off and changed her clothes.

Li Youran wore a white cotton dress, extremely simple in style, except for a cinched waist. Her wet hair, after being dried, fell naturally over her shoulders.

"Tang Lei, are you still there?"

As Li Youran spoke, she pushed open the door and walked out.

Tang Lei was standing under a crooked jujube tree, looking up at the half-moon.

The moonlight fell on the tip of his nose, outlining its sharp features, and Li Youran stared at it in a daze.

"I haven't seen you for several days in a row. What brings you here today?"

Li Youran was unaware that her tone was sour and slightly reproachful when she spoke.

For some reason, seeing You Ran like this, Tang Lei felt a strange sense of happiness.

So he turned around, sat on the stone bench to the side, placed the knife on the table, and looked back at Li Youran.

"The imperial court was short of manpower, so I, as the deputy general, took over and did the work of a general."

Upon hearing Tang Lei's words, Li Youran realized that Tang Lei had gone to the military camp these past few days, which explained why she hadn't seen him for several days.

“Beisai is not far from the capital, so it can be recalled in time if anything happens. Moreover, the key passage to the North Race cannot be short-handed, so I temporarily took over the snow work and worked there for now.”

Li Youran nodded without saying anything.

After all, she didn't understand these things. She only knew that Tang Lei hadn't gone to the Western Frontier, since a round trip to the Western Frontier would take more than a month, while the Northern Frontier could be returned in just two days.

"I have found my family."

Just as Li Youran was about to continue speaking, Tang Lei interrupted her.

"I know."

Then came a moment of silence, neither of them speaking.

Tang Lei thought it was a good thing that Li Youran had found her family, but he was also a little worried.

After all, the Second Prince's wife is of noble status, and there are concerns that she might be difficult to get along with, and that Li Youran might not be able to adapt to such a life.

"The days ahead will be different from the past. Your status is different now, so you should pay attention to your words and actions in the future, and be especially wary of bad people."

Tang Lei felt he was being a bit nagging when he said this, but he couldn't help but remind Li Youran to be careful.

Although the Second Prince is currently quite popular in the court, the struggle among the princes will not stop until the next emperor ascends the throne.

Tang Lei was somewhat worried; Li Youran's identity might pose a danger to him.

"You should also be careful and write to me if anything happens."

Li Youran knew that Tang Lei was not a man of many words, so he felt a warmth in her heart that he could say such thoughtful things.

"Today is the day the results are announced, aren't you going to go check them?"

Liu Zhiyuan looked at Tian Alang with curiosity, only to see her as usual, her hair loose over her shoulders, holding a book and lost in thought.

"The candidate does not need to go to the results in person; he/she can simply wait at home."

While reading, Tian Alang spoke without looking up.

Liu Zhiyuan twitched the corner of his mouth, thinking to himself that youth is indeed fearless and it's good to be young!

He didn't have that kind of confidence; he'd better go see the list himself.

If he's lucky, he might even get into the top three, which would be more than he could ask for.

"Then I'll go by myself."

As Liu Zhiyuan was about to leave, his gaze suddenly fell on the tea table next to Tian Alang's desk, where he saw a basket of fresh and rare fruits.

These fruits were specially sent to Tian Alang by Jiang Qianqian, the daughter of the Minister. Other retainers did not receive this treatment.

“You don’t eat this fruit anyway. When I came back from looking at the list, I happened to pass by Miss Li’s shop, so I delivered it to her for you.”

Upon hearing Liu Zhiyuan mention Li Youran, Tian Alang finally looked up.

"She hasn't been feeling well these past few days, so these fruits must be eaten hot."

At first, Liu Zhiyuan didn't understand what Tian Alang meant by feeling unwell. But when he realized what it meant, his lips twitched, and he muttered, "Pervert."

Today is the day the results of the imperial examination are announced. Early in the morning, the announcement site was packed with people.

Liu Zhiyuan could have avoided coming in person and simply sent his servants to investigate. However, he always felt that seeing it with his own eyes would be more impactful.

He was tall, and although he didn't squeeze to the very front of the crowd, he could still see the names at the top of the list by standing on tiptoe.

The first thing that caught his eye was Tian Alang's name. Liu Zhiyuan's lips twitched again. He thought to himself, "How did this kid grow up? He's so young, but he's got a really good brain."
