Chapter Ten: A Serious Illness

Lu Chuan is now a Xiucai (a scholar who passed the lowest level of the imperial examinations), but Wang Xiangyu says she is not destined to be the wife of a Juren (a scholar who passed the highest level of the imperial examinations), and that Tang Lei is just a short-lived ghost!

Li Youran's head was buzzing; she found it all utterly unbelievable. If she could time travel, why couldn't others be given a second chance at life?

"In her previous life, Wang Xiangyu married Tang Lei, but Tang Lei died young." Li Youran stroked her chin, shaking her head as she continued, "Lu Chuan passed the imperial examination and became a Juren, but he didn't have a wife..."

"The reason Wang Xiangyu is making things difficult for me is simply because I'm preventing her from marrying Lu Chuan." Li Youran had a headache. He had already broken up with Lu Chuan, so why was he still affecting Wang Xiangyu's plans?

"Could it be that I have something going on with that pervert?" Li Youran was startled and hurriedly shook her head: "No, no, I absolutely cannot have any more contact with that pervert."

After figuring out Wang Xiangyu's secret, Li Youran tossed and turned all night and couldn't fall asleep until the early hours of the morning.

"Achoo!" A severe headache and a stuffy nose were the cause of Li Youran's sudden, absent-minded sleep last night, which she had forgotten to cover herself with a blanket.

"Don't push yourself. Just lie in bed and rest today. Don't go anywhere." Madam Li made Li Youran a bowl of ginger soup and said softly, "I'll fry an egg with ginger slices for you later. Just cover yourself with the blanket and take a nap."

"Hmm." Li Youran's voice was low and hoarse. She already had a cold, so there was no sign of anything unusual about her.

As an orphan, Li Youran received so much warmth in this life. Although they were not her biological parents, her adoptive parents treated her extremely well, as if she were their own daughter.

If only there were another blood relative, that would be wonderful. This thought flashed through Li Youran's mind.

After taking the medicine, Li Youran fell into a deep sleep before Li Niangzi returned with the ginger and egg stir-fry.

"Why did Second Master think of coming to this unknown academy?"

“All the famous academies in the capital have been targeted, so it’s really difficult to find anyone useful among them.” The Second Prince said as he placed a hot water bottle in Ouyang Wenwan’s hand. “Although you have no interest in the throne, you still need to have the ability to protect yourself.”

Ouyang Wenwan nodded without responding. In her heart, however, she was thinking that useful people were hard to find, and her own sister was even harder to find.

Li Youran was unaware of what she had missed because of this severe cold.

"Achoo! Achoo! Achoo!" After sneezing three times in a row, Li Youran began to wonder why her cold had gotten so bad, even though she had been obediently resting in bed.

"Men should avoid their mothers as they grow up, and women should avoid their fathers as they grow up, especially since you two are not biological siblings."

Zhou Yingying's voice came from outside the door, which Li Youran was already used to.

"I was just going to get some hot water for my little sister, did you have to make such a fuss?" Li Haoran had been trying to be patient these past few days, but his wife was only getting worse.

Li Haoran couldn't understand why his second sister-in-law was so understanding, while his own wife was completely unreasonable.

"Brother, let me go!" Zhao Lanzhi returned from her work at the pancake shop and saw this scene. She hurriedly took the hot water from Li Haoran's hand.

"Sister-in-law, don't blame me for meddling. Although my younger sister isn't my biological sister, don't we, as her sisters-in-law, know what kind of people my elder brother and Tai Ran are?" Zhao Lanzhi took a few steps and turned back to Zhou Yingying, saying.

"You bootlicker!" Zhou Yingying sneered. "You'll regret this later!"

Unlike the chaos at Li Youran's family home, Liu Zhiyuan's house was quiet.

“Your eldest and second eldest brothers are both away on official posts, and now you’re the only one left in this family.” Madam Liu flipped through the invitation in her hand and continued, “Your father and I don’t plan to let you go. If you leave, we won’t even have anyone to take care of us in our old age.”

"Mother, as long as you don't kick me out, I have no reason to leave on my own," Liu Zhiyuan said ingratiatingly, but his eyes were secretly glancing at the invitation in his mother's hand.

Lady Liu put down the invitation in her hand, looked at her son dressed in white, and her eyes were full of love.

"You're always saying nice things to make your mother happy." Madam Liu waved her hand, signaling the maid to deliver the invitation to Liu Zhiyuan, and said, "Take a look at the date your mother chose, do you like it?"

"Mother, what kind of day did you choose?" Liu Zhiyuan said, pretending not to know. "If Mother wants to invite Madam and Miss to appreciate chrysanthemums together, any day will do."

“Silly son, this is the day for your engagement. Your father and I are thinking of arranging the marriage before the imperial examination.” Madam Liu suddenly remembered something and looked at Liu Zhiyuan with a happy expression, as if saying, “My pig has learned to root for cabbage.”

"I heard that Miss Zhao brought you food a few days ago?"

“I sent her a few times, but I told her it was too cold and I wouldn’t let her go.” Liu Zhiyuan wasn’t surprised that his mother knew about this, because Liu Er was a good-for-nothing who always betrayed him.

"You two are clearly in love, so it would be best to set a date soon." Madam Liu sighed with relief. "Once I've finished your wedding and have a grandson, my mission will be completely accomplished."

"Mother, I don't like Zhao Lanshan at all."

"You good-for-nothing!" Master Liu had just entered the backyard when he heard Liu Zhiyuan's words, "You don't like it, yet you eat the food they give you!"

"I didn't eat any of it; I gave all the food to Liu Er." Liu Zhiyuan stood up and said, "My son has no feelings for Zhao Lanshan, so Father, it would be better to call off this marriage as soon as possible."

Liu Zhiyuan could pretend to be obedient and well-behaved in front of Lady Liu, but he was completely unrestrained in front of Master Liu.

"Today I'm going to beat you to death, you unfilial son!" Master Liu didn't care about his scholarly image anymore, and took off one shoe to chase after Liu Zhiyuan.

It took Li Youran seven whole days to recover, and the first thing she did when she went out was to look for a shop.

Although she didn't have much money saved up, Li Youran decided against setting up a stall. The weather was getting colder, making it inconvenient not only for her to sell food but also for customers.

The bustling streets were something Li Youran didn't even dare to dream of, after all, she only had five taels of silver in her hand.

After wandering around for a long time, I went into a tiny shop and asked what it was. They said it cost twenty taels of silver.

"Auntie, do you rent out this shop?"

"Rent, rent."

At the street corner, there was an inconspicuous shop that looked very dilapidated. If it weren't for his limited funds, Li Youran would never have given it a second glance.

"Young lady, my shop is quite cheap, only three taels of silver," the old woman said, adding, "but I want to stay here."

"Auntie, is there something you're having trouble telling me?"

Hearing Li Youran's words, the old lady sighed heavily and looked back into the shop.
