"Damn it! Where am I?" Ning Yu clutched his aching chest, trying hard to recall what had happened.
He remembered losing consciousness after falling into the trap. Now it seems someone must have rescued him.
"Captain! You're awake!" Just then, a familiar voice came from above.
"Xiao Li? Is that you?" Ning Yu looked up and saw a familiar face.
"It's me, Captain! We've found you!" Xiao Li said, reaching out to pull Ning Yu up from the ground.
"What about the others? How are they?" Ning Yu asked anxiously.
“They…” Xiao Li’s face was somewhat grim, “They’re still inside the chemical plant…”
"Let's go! We'll go rescue them right away!" Ning Yu said, heading towards the chemical plant.
"Captain, you can't go!" Xiao Li grabbed him. "It's too dangerous there!"
"Let go! I have to save them!" Ning Yu shook off Xiao Li's hand, her tone firm.
"But……"
"There are no 'buts'! I'm their captain, I can't abandon them!"
After Ning Yu finished speaking, he ran towards the chemical plant without looking back. Seeing this, Xiao Li could only follow helplessly.
When Ning Yu finally found the trapped team members, he was stunned by the scene before him. A pungent smell of burning and a strong stench of blood mingled together, assaulting his nostrils and almost suffocating him. In the dim light, the interior of the chemical plant appeared even more dilapidated, with twisted and deformed metal walls, scattered fragments of various instruments and mottled bloodstains on the ground, and a nauseating stench of decay permeating the air.
The trapped team members huddled together in twos and threes, their faces etched with pain and despair. Some had horrible red patches on their skin, some were bleeding from their mouths and noses and their bodies were convulsing, and some had fallen into a coma, their breaths barely audible.
"Captain..." A glimmer of hope ignited in the team members' eyes when they saw Ning Yu appear, but it was quickly replaced by despair.
"Captain, are we...are we going to die..." a team member asked in a hoarse voice. His face was covered with red rashes, which he kept scratching, leaving streaks of blood.
"Don't speak! We'll take you back right away!" Ning Yu suppressed his grief and directed his team members to lift the wounded onto stretchers.
Seeing his former comrades-in-arms in such a state, Ning Yu was filled with self-reproach and anger. He clenched his fists so tightly that his nails dug deep into his flesh, and blood dripped from between his fingers, but he was completely unaware of it.
Upon returning to the new territory, Ning Yu immediately arranged for medical personnel to treat the injured team members. However, the damage caused by radiation was far more severe than they had imagined; some team members' bodily functions had begun to fail, and even the best medications were ineffective.
"Captain, how much longer can we hold on?" a team member asked weakly from his hospital bed, his voice barely audible.
Ning Yu forced a calm expression and reassured him, "We will find a way, we definitely will!"
However, his heart was ice-cold. He knew that with their current medical resources, radiation sickness was simply incurable.
To make matters worse, just as Ning Yu was deeply worried about the injured team members, more news came that the old forces were spreading rumors around the new territory, claiming that the new territory had been contaminated by radiation and that staying there would only lead to death, and inciting some team members' families to relocate.
"Captain, my wife and children are still young. I can't let them take risks. I have to leave here!" A team member approached Ning Yu, his tone resolute.
"Yes, Captain, we can't joke about our family's lives!" The other team members echoed.
Looking at these brothers who had once risked their lives with him, Ning Yu felt a mix of emotions. He knew they weren't cowards, but faced with harsh reality, they had no choice but to consider their families.
Ning Yu took a deep breath and slowly said, "I understand how you feel, and I assure you..."
Before he could finish speaking, he was interrupted by a series of hurried footsteps.
"Captain! Something's happened..." A team member rushed in, his face filled with terror. "Outside the city walls...outside the city walls..."
"What's going on outside the city walls?" Ning Yu's heart tightened, and an ominous premonition welled up in his mind.
"Outside the city walls... a large number of mutated creatures have appeared!"
"A mutated creature?!" Ning Yu's face darkened, as if a huge boulder had been placed on his heart.
As if things weren't bad enough, the new territory was in dire need of rebuilding and resources were already scarce. Now, with the added threat of radiation sickness and mutated creatures, the situation was truly worse than ever.
"Captain, what should we do now?" The team member who came to report the news asked in a trembling voice, clearly terrified by the scene outside the city walls.
"How many mutated creatures are there?" Ning Yu quickly calmed down and asked.
"They're densely packed, countless! And they're bigger and more ferocious than any we've encountered before!" The team member's voice was filled with panic, clearly having witnessed the horrifying scene outside the city walls.
Ning Yu didn't speak, but quickly walked to the window, pushed it open, and a wave of heat carrying a fishy stench rushed in. In the distance, at the foot of the towering city wall, a dark mass was slowly moving towards the wall, like a black tide, carrying a suffocating sense of oppression.
"This can't go on any longer!" Ning Yu thought to himself. "We must find a solution as soon as possible, otherwise the construction of the new territory will be in vain, and more importantly, the lives of our brothers will be in grave danger."
He took a deep breath, turned to his team members, and said, "Pass down the order: all combat personnel must immediately assemble at the city wall and prepare for battle! Also, have Mu Xue come to the command center to see me!"
