Chapter 12 Secure the defenses and find temporary peace

The setting sun, like blood, painted the edge of the dilapidated city with a tragic hue. Ning Yu stepped out of the warehouse, cautiously surveying his surroundings. Only after confirming there was no danger did he turn back inside. He leaned his iron axe against the wall and pulled out a tattered piece of canvas from a corner. He had salvaged it from an abandoned truck, intending to use it to repair the leaks in the warehouse.

He knew that Widow Li wouldn't let the destruction of the water source go unpunished. That woman was insatiably greedy and would do anything to seize supplies. Last time, when she led her men into the warehouse, if it weren't for Grandpa Sun's desperate protection, he would probably be dead already. Thinking of this, a cold glint flashed in Ning Yu's eyes. He clenched his fists and secretly vowed: he would never let such a tragedy repeat itself.

He began to reinforce the shelter's defenses. First, he used stones and broken bricks to block up the walls that Grandpa Sun had damaged, then he covered the broken windows with canvas and weighed them down with heavy debris. The warehouse became even dimmer, but Ning Yu couldn't worry about that; he had to race against time and finish everything before nightfall.

Sweat soaked his clothes, but he dared not stop to rest. He found a rusty steel bar, bent it into a makeshift trap, and set it at the warehouse entrance. Having done all this, Ning Yu slumped against the wall, panting heavily. He picked up his water bottle, only to find it nearly empty.

"We must find a new water source as soon as possible..." he muttered to himself, his eyes filled with anxiety. Just then, a soft footstep sound came from outside the warehouse...

"Who?!" Ning Yu's heart tightened. He stood up abruptly, grabbed an iron axe, and moved stealthily toward the door. The warehouse door was ajar, and in the dim light from outside, he saw a bulky figure peeking in.

It's Widow Li!

Ning Yu gripped the axe tightly. He recognized the figure; even in the dim light, he couldn't forget that greedy and fierce gaze.

Widow Li seemed to have noticed the commotion in the warehouse. A sly glint flashed in her eyes. She cleared her throat and said in a feigned tone, "Oh, Ning boy, you're home? I just happened to be passing by and saw you. I'm so sorry about what happened last time..."

Ning Yu didn't speak. Through the crack in the door, he saw that behind Widow Li were two burly men, each holding a stick, clearly indicating that they had come prepared.

Seeing that Ning Yu didn't respond, Widow Li mustered her courage, pushed open the storeroom door, and strode in. She immediately spotted the water jug in the corner, her eyes lighting up. She greedily licked her lips. "Oh, there's still water? Looks like you're recovering well! How about sharing some with your aunt to quench her thirst?"

"Get out!" Ning Yu said coldly, his eyes filled with disgust and wariness.

When her gentle approach failed, Widow Li changed her tune, saying fiercely, "You won't listen to reason, so you'll have to suffer the consequences! Don't think I don't know you're hiding something good! If you know what's good for you, hand it over obediently, or don't blame us for being impolite!"

After saying that, she directed the two men behind her to pounce on Ning Yu.

"You're asking for death!" Ning Yu roared, swinging his iron axe and hacking fiercely at the man charging at the front. The man, caught off guard by Ning Yu's sudden attack, couldn't dodge in time and was struck in the arm by the axe, letting out a scream.

Seeing this, another man swung a stick at Ning Yu's head. Ning Yu dodged to the side and kicked the man in the stomach, sending him flying.

Seeing that neither of her two subordinates was a match for Ning Yu, a hint of panic flashed in Widow Li's eyes, but she quickly calmed down, pulled out a gleaming dagger from her bosom, and stabbed at Ning Yu.

"Go to hell!" Widow Li roared, her face contorted in rage.

Ning Yu was prepared. He leaned back to dodge Widow Li's attack, and at the same time swung his iron axe to force Widow Li back.

Widow Li was intimidated by Ning Yu's imposing presence and hesitated to approach. She glanced at her two henchmen lying on the ground groaning, then at the iron axe in Ning Yu's hand. Her eyes darted around, and suddenly she adopted a pitiful expression, pleading, "Young Ning, please have pity on me! I haven't had water for three days, please give me a sip! I beg you..."

As she spoke, she actually knelt down on the ground and reached out to grab Ning Yu's trouser leg.

Ning Yu disgustedly avoided Widow Li's hand and said coldly, "What do you think..."

"Do you think I'd fall for the same trick twice?" Ning Yu interrupted her coldly, without a trace of pity in his eyes. He had already seen through Widow Li's scheme; this was just another clumsy performance.

Seeing that a direct assault was ineffective, Widow Li resorted to her old trick of seduction, her heart already burning with rage. She abruptly scrambled to her feet, her face contorted in a ferocious roar: "You little brat, you won't listen to reason! You really think I'm afraid of you?!"

She pulled a cloth bag from her bosom and hurled it at Ning Yu. The bag ripped open, and a pungent yellow powder instantly filled the air.

"Cough cough..." Ning Yu was prepared and held his breath when Widow Li took out the cloth bag, but he still inhaled a little. He immediately felt dizzy and his throat felt like it was on fire.

"What is this?!" Ning Yu covered his mouth and nose, staggered back, and stared warily at Widow Li.

"Hmph, this is a sleeping powder I got for a fortune! Kid, you'd better accept your fate!" Widow Li laughed triumphantly, as if she could already see Ning Yu lying on the ground, unable to get up.

Ning Yu suppressed his physical discomfort, coldly observing Widow Li, his mind racing as he considered a solution. He couldn't sit idly by and wait for his doom; he had to escape this predicament as soon as possible!

He feigned exhaustion, swaying precariously, and said haltingly, "You...you think you can defeat me with such tricks? You underestimate me, Ning..."
