As the smoke cleared, the night sky returned to its usual tranquility, with only the wrecked buildings and scorched earth silently testifying to the ferocity of the battle.
"What exactly are these monsters?" A team member wiped the blood off his blade with his sleeve, his voice filled with doubt and unease.
"Yes, its defense is amazing, and its attack power is much stronger than before," another team member said with lingering fear. "If it weren't for Brother Ning and Sister Xue's timely intervention, we probably would have..."
Ning Yu ignored his teammates' discussions. He frowned and scanned the battlefield with sharp eyes, trying to find some clues from the monsters' corpses.
"What's wrong? Did you find anything?" Mu Xue walked to Ning Yu's side and followed his gaze.
“The bodies of these monsters have mutated,” Ning Yu said, pointing to the corpse of one of the monsters. “Their bones are harder, their muscle fibers are thicker, and…” He paused, his tone becoming serious, “I sensed an unusual energy fluctuation.”
"Abnormal energy fluctuations?" Mu Xue's heart skipped a beat upon hearing this. "Could it be that these monsters are being controlled by someone?"
Ning Yu shook his head. "It's not certain yet, but I have a feeling that the appearance of these monsters is no accident."
Over the next few days, Ning Yu's forces entered a state of full alert. They rested and recuperated, treated the wounded, reinforced their defenses, and enhanced the strength of their members, preparing for the even greater challenges to come.
Ning Yu devoted all his time to studying those mysterious resources. He had a strong intuition that there must be some deep connection between these resources and those monsters.
He worked day and night, analyzing, experimenting, and simulating, neglecting sleep and meals. Mu Xue saw this and felt heartache, but she knew that Ning Yu was doing this for everyone's safety.
"How's it going? Any progress?" Late that night, Mu Xue walked into the laboratory with a steaming cup of coffee in her hand.
Ning Yu rubbed his tired eyes, took the coffee and took a sip. The bitter taste made him a little more awake.
“We’ve made some discoveries, but not enough to solve the mystery.” He pointed to the resources on the table that were shimmering with a strange light. “These resources contain a very powerful energy, and this energy is very similar to the energy fluctuations of those monsters.”
"You mean these monsters use these resources to enhance their strength?" Mu Xue asked.
Ning Yu nodded. "Very likely, and I suspect that there's an even bigger secret hidden behind these resources..."
Before he could finish speaking, a blood-covered spy stumbled into the lab, urgently saying, "Something's wrong, boss, I've found..."
"What happened? Tell me slowly!" Ning Yu helped the scout up, his tone tinged with anxiety.
The scout, panting heavily, said haltingly, "I...I followed your instructions and went deep into the vicinity of the monster's habitat to scout, and I discovered..." He paused, seemingly struggling to organize his thoughts, "...I discovered a huge...altar there!"
"An altar?" Ning Yu and Mu Xue exchanged a glance, both seeing a hint of shock in each other's eyes.
“Yes, an altar built of some kind of black rock, surrounded by countless monsters,” the scout swallowed, his voice trembling slightly with fear. “I hid in the shadows and observed for a long time, and I discovered that those monsters seemed to be… channeling energy to the top of the altar!”
"What's at the top of the altar?" Mu Xue pressed.
"A giant cocoon!" The scout took a deep breath, as if exhaling all the fear he had just felt. "A huge, black cocoon, radiating an eerie aura! I saw it with my own eyes—the monsters poured their energy into the cocoon, and then..."
"And then what?" Ning Yu's heart suddenly raced, and an ominous premonition surged into his heart.
"Then those monsters turned to ashes..." the scout said, his voice trembling. "I suspect that within that giant cocoon, there might be a powerful creature, a ruler capable of destroying us all!"
A deathly silence fell over the laboratory; you could hear a pin drop. Ning Yu's face was terribly grim; his fists were clenched so tightly that his knuckles were slightly white from the force. Mu Xue was also silent; she knew that an unprecedented and immense threat was quietly descending.
“It seems we have to prepare for the worst…” Ning Yu took a deep breath, his eyes gradually hardening. “Send word to gather all members, I have something important to announce…” His gaze swept over everyone, finally settling on the scout. “You did a good job, go and rest now.”
The scout, relieved as if granted a pardon, stumbled out of the lab. Ning Yu watched his retreating figure, a flicker of worry and resolve in his eyes. He knew an unprecedented storm was brewing, and he would lead his companions to face it head-on, even if…
The piercing alarm blared through the sky, casting a tense atmosphere over every corner of the Ningyu base. All members, from high-ranking officers to ordinary staff, gathered in the conference hall, their faces etched with unease and fear.
Ning Yu stood solemnly on the high platform, his sharp gaze sweeping over the crowd below. He said in a deep voice, "I know that the activity of the alien beasts around the base has become increasingly frequent recently, causing great panic among everyone. But I want to tell you that we are facing not only the threat of alien beasts, but a far more terrifying enemy..."
