Chapter 18: Encountering Difficulties on the Journey, Where Does Hope Remain?

However, at that moment, he suddenly noticed that in a corner of this pile of rocks, there seemed to be a dark cave entrance, hidden by rocks and vines, appearing and disappearing intermittently.

"What is that?" Ning Yu's heart stirred, and a strong curiosity drove him to find out.

He used the rocks for support, slowly stood up, and walked towards the hidden cave entrance...

Ning Yu pushed aside the last vine blocking the entrance to the cave, and a damp, musty smell wafted out. The entrance was larger than he had imagined, easily large enough for an adult to enter. He hesitated for a moment, then bent down and crawled inside.

The cave was pitch black, so dark you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. Ning Yu groped his way forward, his feet sinking into soft earth mixed with gravel and dry branches. He didn't know where the passage led, or what lay inside, but he had no way out. The supernatural power within him was like a ticking time bomb, ready to obliterate him at any moment. He could only pin his hopes on this mysterious underground chamber, hoping it might offer him a glimmer of hope.

The passage was longer than he had imagined. He walked for about ten minutes before he could vaguely see a faint light ahead. He perked up and quickened his pace.

When he finally stepped out of the passage, a bright and clear view opened up before him.

It was a spacious basement, with walls and ceilings made of poured concrete, making it appear very sturdy. The basement contained some simple furniture and a workbench piled high with various instruments and documents.

Two people were sitting in front of the workbench.

One was an elderly man with gray hair, wearing thick glasses, intently staring at the documents in front of him. The other was a young man helping the elderly man organize his equipment.

Hearing the noise, the two of them looked up at Ning Yu at the same time.

"Who are you?" The old man put down the documents in his hand, stared sharply at Ning Yu, and spoke with a hint of wariness in his tone.

Ning Yu took a deep breath, trying to appear calm. "My name is Ning Yu, and I'm a... traveler. I stumbled upon this place and hope to..."

"A traveler?" The old man interrupted him, a mocking smile on his face. "In this era, who still dares to call themselves a traveler? Young man, you'd better tell the truth, otherwise..."

“I meant no harm,” Ning Yu quickly said. “I just… need help.”

His gaze fell on the documents beside the old man, which clearly stated the words "Research on Supernatural Abilities".

“You…” Ning Yu’s voice trembled slightly, “You are…”

"We are..." The old man was about to speak when the young man beside him tugged at his sleeve.

The young man stood up, walked up to Ning Yu, looked him up and down, and then said with a smile, "Hello, my name is Liu Xiaodi, and this is Dr. Zhao. We..."

"Shut up!" the old man suddenly shouted, his gaze fixed on Ning Yu, and he said, word by word, "Who exactly are you?"
