Chapter 242 Dark clouds gather again, crisis looms ahead

However, another wolf seized the opportunity and pounced, biting Mu Xue's arm. Mu Xue let out a piercing scream, and blood instantly stained her sleeve... Ning Yu watched helplessly as all this unfolded, powerless to stop it. He felt a chilling despair slowly engulfing him...

"Mu Xue!" The stench of wolves assaulted Ning Yu's face, carrying a strong, pungent smell of blood that nearly suffocated him. He struggled desperately, trying to push away the giant wolf that was pinning him down, but his exhausted body felt as heavy as lead. The wolf's claws dug deep into his arms, the intense pain almost causing him to faint. He watched helplessly as Mu Xue, trying to save him, was bitten by another wolf, her sleeve stained crimson with blood, his heart breaking.

"Mu Xue!" Ning Yu roared, his eyes bloodshot. He had never felt so powerless, so desperate. With all his might, he finally managed to push the giant wolf off him a little, and then slammed his fist hard into the wolf's head.

However, this seemingly ferocious attack was like a tickle to the thick-skinned mutated wolf. The giant wolf merely shook its head, let out a low growl, and then opened its blood-red maw to bite at Ning Yu's neck.

In the nick of time, Mu Xue endured the excruciating pain and, with all her remaining strength, plunged the dagger in her hand into the giant wolf's abdomen. The giant wolf let out a piercing howl, its body convulsed violently, and then it collapsed heavily to the ground.

"Ning Yu, are you alright?" Mu Xue's voice was weak and trembling. She covered her blood-soaked arm and staggered to Ning Yu's side.

Ning Yu struggled to sit up, looking at Mu Xue's injured arm, her heart filled with guilt and self-blame. "Mu Xue, it's all my fault, I've dragged you into this."

Mu Xue shook her head, forcing a smile. "Stop talking nonsense, we have to find a way to escape now."

The surrounding wolves did not retreat because of their leader's fall; instead, they approached them even more frantically. Their scarlet eyes gleamed with bloodlust, and their deep growls were deafening.

Ning Yu looked around, searching for a chance to escape. Suddenly, he noticed that the wolves seemed very afraid of firelight. When Mu Xue stabbed the giant wolf with her dagger, the gunpowder powder on the dagger ignited, emitting a faint spark, and several nearby wolves immediately took a few steps back in fright.

"Mu Xue, do you have any gunpowder?" Ning Yu asked anxiously.

Mu Xue shook her head. "No, we've used up all the gunpowder we used to light the branches."

Ning Yu's heart sank. They were now surrounded by wolves, without any weapons or means of starting a fire. Were they really going to perish here?

Just then, Ning Yu's gaze fell on a dead tree not far away. Some dry vines were wrapped around the dead tree; if these vines could be set on fire, they might scare away the wolves.

However, they currently have no tools to start a fire.

Suddenly, a thought flashed through Ning Yu's mind. He remembered that he had redeemed a lighter in the system shop before, and had kept it in his pocket without using it.

He quickly reached into his pocket and, sure enough, felt a metallic object. With trembling hands, he took out the lighter, pressed the switch, and a tiny flame leaped out.

"There's a fire!" Ning Yu was overjoyed. He quickly brought the lighter close to the vines on the dead tree.

Just then, a huge wolf pounced...

"Watch out!" Mu Xue cried out, shoving Ning Yu away abruptly. With all her might, she pushed Ning Yu away, but was instead pounced on by the enormous wolf and knocked to the ground. Sharp fangs pierced her clothes, leaving deep teeth marks on her arm. The intense pain made it almost impossible for her to breathe, but she still stared intently at Ning Yu, her eyes filled with worry.

Ning Yu was pushed away by Mu Xue and staggered a few steps before regaining his balance. Seeing Mu Xue being pounced on by the wolves, his heart clenched, and a strong sense of fear surged through him. He frantically searched his surroundings, trying to find anything he could use to attack the wolves.

His gaze fell upon a rock he had previously overlooked. The rock wasn't large, but its edges were sharp; if it could strike a wolf's vitals, it might deter them. He bent down, picked up the rock, and without hesitation hurled it at the giant wolf that was pouncing on Mu Xue.

The stone struck the wolf precisely on the head. The giant wolf howled, released Mu Xue, and rolled on the ground in agony. Seeing this, the other wolves also took a few steps back, their eyes showing wariness.

Taking advantage of the moment, Ning Yu rushed to Mu Xue's side and helped her up. "Mu Xue, how are you?" he asked anxiously, his voice trembling slightly.

Mu Xue gritted her teeth and shook her head. "I'm fine, just a bitten arm." She glanced at the menacing pack of wolves around her and said gravely, "We must leave here as soon as possible."

Ning Yu looked around and realized that although the wolf pack had temporarily retreated, they hadn't left. Their eyes were still fixed on them, ready to attack again at any moment. He realized that a single stone was far from enough to completely rid him of these ferocious beasts.

He thought of fire again. He knew these mutated wolves had an instinctive fear of fire, and if he could start a fire, perhaps he could scare them away. However, they didn't have any tools to start a fire.

Suddenly, his gaze fell on Mu Xue's dagger. A small flint was embedded in the hilt of the dagger, an essential tool for his survival in the apocalypse. He quickly took the dagger from Mu Xue's hand and rubbed the flint against the blade, trying to ignite the surrounding dry grass.

Sparks flew, but the dry grass remained unlit. Ning Yu's heart sank. Were they really going to perish here?

Just then, he felt something poking him in his pocket. He reached in and touched it, only to find the lighter he had redeemed from the system shop earlier. Overjoyed, he quickly pulled out the lighter, pressed the switch, and a tiny flame leaped out.

Upon seeing the flames, the surrounding wolves growled uneasily and took a few steps back. Ning Yu quickly moved the flames closer to the dry grass on the ground, which soon caught fire, and the flames gradually spread.

Upon seeing the raging flames, the wolves howled in terror and turned to flee.

Ning Yu and Mu Xue finally breathed a sigh of relief. They looked at each other and smiled, overwhelmed with joy at surviving such a close call.

However, just when they thought the crisis was over, the sky suddenly darkened, and a deep rumble came from afar. A huge shadow descended from the sky, slowly approaching their direction.

"What is that?" Mu Xue pointed at the shadow in the sky, her voice filled with fear.

Ning Yu narrowed his eyes, carefully observing the shadow. A sudden sense of foreboding rose in his heart; this seemed even more dangerous than a pack of wolves.

Before he could speak, a wolf suddenly darted out from the side and bit Mu Xue's injured arm.

"Mu Xue!" Ning Yu shouted...
