Chapter 243 Desperate Struggle for Survival

Sparks flew, but the dry grass remained unlit. Ning Yu's heart sank. Were they really going to perish here?

Just then, he felt something poking him in his pocket. He reached in and touched it, only to find the lighter he had redeemed from the system shop earlier. Overjoyed, he quickly pulled out the lighter, pressed the switch, and a tiny flame leaped out.

Upon seeing the flames, the surrounding wolves growled uneasily and took a few steps back. Ning Yu quickly moved the flames closer to the dry grass on the ground, which soon caught fire, and the flames gradually spread.

Upon seeing the raging flames, the wolves howled in terror and turned to flee.

Ning Yu and Mu Xue finally breathed a sigh of relief. They looked at each other and smiled, overwhelmed with joy at surviving such a close call.

However, just when they thought the crisis was over, the sky suddenly darkened, and a deep rumble came from afar. A huge shadow descended from the sky, slowly approaching their direction.

"What is that?" Mu Xue pointed at the shadow in the sky, her voice filled with fear.

Ning Yu narrowed his eyes, carefully observing the shadow. A sudden sense of foreboding rose in his heart; this seemed even more dangerous than a pack of wolves.

Before he could speak, a wolf suddenly darted out from the side and bit Mu Xue's injured arm.

"Mu Xue!" Ning Yu shouted, using all his strength to slam his knee into the wolf's belly. The beast howled in pain, released Ning Yu, and rolled several times on the ground. Ning Yu didn't care about anything else and immediately rushed towards the wolf that was biting Mu Xue. He raised his fist and punched the wolf's head repeatedly.

The wolf was struck in the head, letting out a painful whimper, but its teeth remained firmly locked on Mu Xue's arm, refusing to let go. Blood flowed down Mu Xue's arm, staining the ground red.

Mu Xue gritted her teeth, enduring the excruciating pain, and groped along the ground with her other hand, hoping to find a sharp stone to attack the wolf. Her hand was cut by the sand and gravel, and blood seeped out, but she ignored the pain and continued groping.

"Hold on, Mu Xue!" Ning Yu shouted anxiously as he kept hitting the wolf's head. He felt his fists were numb, but he dared not stop. He knew that if he stopped, the wolf would bite Mu Xue even more frantically.

Seeing Mu Xue's actions, Ning Yu also began searching the surroundings for something to create a fire source. He found some dried moss... "Found it!" Ning Yu roared.

Ning Yu saw Mu Xue groping on the ground and understood her intention. He glanced around, hoping to find something easier to ignite. His gaze fell on a damp rock, its base covered with clumps of dry moss. An idea flashed through Ning Yu's mind. Moss is dry and flammable; if he could combine it with the faint flame of a lighter…

A wolf seized its opportunity and pounced on Ning Yu from the side. He couldn't dodge in time, and the wolf's claws lashed his back, sending a searing pain through him. He groaned, staggered a few steps, and nearly fell. But he dared not stop; he knew that any hesitation at this moment could be fatal. He gritted his teeth, enduring the excruciating pain in his back, and continued searching the surrounding area.

He carefully peeled the dried moss off the rock, gathering it into a small pile of dry kindling. Then, with trembling hands, he pulled out his lighter again. The lighter was almost out of fuel, the flame so weak it seemed it might go out at any moment. He held his breath and cautiously brought the flame close to the moss.

"call--"

A faint flame licked at the dry moss, and a wisp of smoke rose slowly. Ning Yu was overjoyed and quickly blew gently on the flame, hoping to make the fire burn bigger.

Just then, another wolf pounced from behind, knocking him to the ground. The lighter slipped from his hand and fell several meters away.

"Ning Yu!" Mu Xue shouted in terror.

Ning Yu was pinned to the ground by the wolf, unable to move. He felt the wolf's claws pierce his clothes, and its sharp teeth were about to bite into his throat. The shadow of death loomed over him, and he closed his eyes in despair.

At the critical moment, he felt the weight pressing down on him suddenly disappear. He opened his eyes abruptly and saw Mu Xue standing in front of him, holding a sharp stone in her hand, the stone stained with blood.

"Go and light the fire!" Mu Xue's tone was urgent and firm. Her face was covered in blood, but her eyes were unusually bright.

Without thinking twice, Ning Yu scrambled to his feet and ran towards the fallen lighter. He picked it up and tried to light the moss again. This time, the flame finally stabilized and ignited the dry moss.

The fire gradually spread, dispelling the surrounding darkness. The wolves growled uneasily and began to slowly retreat.

Ning Yu watched the fire grow stronger and felt a little more at ease. He turned to look at Mu Xue and found her clutching her arm, her face pale.

Your hand...

Mu Xue shook her head, enduring the pain as she said, "Don't worry about me, hurry..."

Before she could finish speaking, a blinding white light suddenly flashed in the distant sky, followed by a deafening explosion...

Mu Xue groped on the ground, her fingertips touching a sharp stone, a surge of hope welling up inside her. She gripped the stone tightly, her gaze fixed on the wolf that had bitten her arm. Blood streamed down her arm, the intense pain making it hard to breathe, but she endured it, her eyes gleaming with determination. She suddenly raised her arm, and with all her might, plunged the stone fiercely into the wolf's eye.
