“We…” Ning Yu was about to say a few words of comfort when she was interrupted. Mu Xue pointed to the depths of the cave entrance, her voice urgent, “Ning Yu, look…”
Ning Yu looked in the direction Mu Xue was pointing, and his pupils suddenly contracted. A wolf of exceptionally large size, its eyes gleaming with ferocity, ignored the scorching flames and pounced straight towards the center of the fire, its target the flickering flames!
In the nick of time, Ning Yu disregarded the pain in his arm and suddenly raised his foot, kicking the giant wolf hard. A sharp pain shot through his arm, but he gritted his teeth and persevered, this kick containing all his strength.
"Bang!"
The giant wolf was kicked in the stomach, letting out a mournful howl. Its massive body crashed to the ground, rolling several times before coming to a stop. It struggled to get up, but the intense pain prevented it from moving. The flames it had knocked down scattered and were about to go out.
Ning Yu's heart tightened. He knew that if the fire went out, they would be in dire straits. He endured the excruciating pain in his arm, quickly grabbed a handful of dry grass, and threw it with all his might at the still-burning embers.
"call!"
The dry grass ignited immediately, and the flames reignited and spread rapidly. Ning Yu grabbed a few more branches and threw them into the fire. The fire gradually grew larger, illuminating the cave once more.
The giant wolf that had been kicked away let out a low whimper, struggling to its feet, its eyes filled with fear and rage. Seeing the fire intensify, the other wolves retreated as well. They lingered a short distance away, their green eyes still fixed on Ning Yu and Mu Xue, unwilling to leave.
The flickering firelight inside the cave illuminated the weary figures of Ning Yu and Mu Xue. Fine beads of sweat glistened on Ning Yu's forehead, and the wound on his arm throbbed faintly. But he dared not let his guard down; he knew the wolf pack hadn't given up, they were simply waiting for their chance.
He turned to look at Mu Xue and found that her face was pale and the wound on her arm was still bleeding.
"Mu Xue, your injury..." Ning Yu asked with concern.
Mu Xue gritted her teeth and forced herself to remain calm, saying, "It's nothing, just a minor injury." She tore off a piece of her clothing and used it to bandage the wound, then looked up at the pack of wolves lurking outside the cave.
Ning Yu added more dry grass and branches to the fire, making it burn even brighter. This dispelled the chill in the cave and temporarily intimidated the wolves outside. The crackling of the fire echoed through the cave, contrasting with the howling wolves outside, creating a tense and eerie symphony. He knew this was only a brief respite; the real danger was far from over…
“They…” Mu Xue’s voice was low, her gaze fixed on the wolves lurking at the cave entrance, “They seem to be…waiting for something…” Mu Xue took a deep breath, her chest rising and falling slightly. The firelight flickered on her face, illuminating her taut lines and pale complexion. The temporary sense of security was like a thin layer of ice, ready to shatter at any moment. She looked down at the wound on her arm; blood had soaked through the makeshift bandage, and waves of stinging pain continued to emanate from it. She tore off another piece of clothing and tightly wrapped it around the wound, trying to slow the bleeding.
Ning Yu slumped to the ground, his back against the cold stone wall. A wave of exhaustion washed over him, threatening to engulf him. He looked up at the cave entrance; the flickering firelight made the wolves' greedy eyes appear even more sinister and terrifying. The crackling of burning firewood mingled with the low howls of wolves outside, creating a symphony of death. He knew that this raging fire was their last line of defense. Once the fire died down, they would face relentless tearing and devouring.
"We need to think of a way..." Ning Yu said in a low voice, his voice so hoarse it was almost inaudible.
Mu Xue nodded, her gaze sweeping back and forth in the cave, searching for any usable resources. "These wolves... they seem very patient..." She observed that the wolves weren't in a hurry to attack, but rather lingered around the cave entrance, as if waiting for something. This eerie calm made her even more uneasy.
Ning Yu noticed this as well. "They're waiting for the fire to go out..." he said in a low voice, "or... waiting for us to get out..."
The two fell silent, the air in the cave seemingly frozen. Only the crackling of the flames and the faint howls of wolves outside broke the suffocating stillness.
Ning Yu's gaze fell on some stones scattered around the campfire. These stones varied in size and shape, some with sharp edges, seemingly suitable as weapons. A thought flashed through his mind.
“Mu Xue,” he said, pointing to the stones, “collect those stones, the bigger and heavier the better.”
Mu Xue immediately understood what he meant. Despite the pain in her arm, she began to collect the stones and piled them next to the fire.
Ning Yu then began to carefully observe the structure of the cave. It was a naturally formed stone cave with a narrow entrance but a relatively spacious interior. The ceiling was high, with some cracks and protrusions. His gaze lingered on a protruding rock on the ceiling, and a bold idea gradually took shape.
Time ticked by, the firewood in the bonfire gradually burned out, and the flames began to wane. The howls of wolves outside the cave grew more urgent, as if urging their prey to appear.
"Hurry up," Ning Yu urged, his voice tinged with anxiety, "The fire's about to go out..."
Mu Xue had already collected a pile of stones, and she handed the largest one to Ning Yu. Ning Yu took the stone, weighed it in his hand, then stood up and walked deeper into the cave... He looked up at the protruding rock on the cave ceiling, took a deep breath, and a resolute glint flashed in his eyes.
