Ning Yu and Mu Xue nervously watched the wolf pack lurking in the distance, their homemade weapons gripped tightly. The crackling fire cast their shadows, large and small, onto the cave wall, mirroring their anxious hearts. Time ticked by, and their strength was rapidly waning under this intense pressure. Hunger and exhaustion washed over them like a tidal wave, relentlessly eroding their willpower.
The wind howled outside the cave, like the low wails of wolves, adding to the eerie atmosphere. Ning Yu's metal powers had not yet recovered, and Mu Xue's plant manipulation was ineffective at such close range. They could only rely on their rudimentary weapons and extraordinary willpower to fight against these ferocious beasts.
"They seem to be getting closer." Mu Xue's voice trembled slightly. She licked her chapped lips, her gaze fixed on a particularly large gray wolf in the pack. It was the pack's leader, its eyes filled with a bloodthirsty hunger, as if it already saw them as its prey.
Ning Yu didn't speak, only nodded slightly. He gripped the metal fragment in his hand, feeling the lingering warmth on it. This was a car part he had found in the rubble, which he had sharpened into a razor-sharp blade; it was his only means of support at the moment.
Suddenly, a wolf seemed unable to contain itself and stealthily approached them. It crouched low, carefully moving through the bushes, its gray fur blending seamlessly with its surroundings. If it weren't for Ning Yu's keen observation skills, it would have been difficult to spot it.
"Left side, be careful!" Ning Yu whispered to Mu Xue, his voice low and powerful, as if he was trying his best to suppress his inner fear.
Mu Xue immediately turned her gaze to the left and, sure enough, saw a gray wolf slowly approaching. She gripped the wooden spear tightly, her palms sweating, her heart pounding as if it would burst from her chest.
The wolf drew closer, seemingly already smelling its prey; its green eyes gleamed with greed. It stopped, observing the entrance to the cave, as if searching for the perfect moment to attack.
Ning Yu and Mu Xue held their breath, staring motionlessly at the wolf. They knew this was a life-or-death struggle; the slightest mistake could mean certain death. The air inside the cave seemed to solidify, so oppressive it was hard to breathe.
Just then, a dark shadow flashed past them again out of the corner of their eye, moving so fast it was almost impossible to catch. Ning Yu turned his head sharply, but only saw swaying bushes and the flashing green light of a wolf pack in the distance. He whispered to Mu Xue, "It's not just wolves..."
The wolf suddenly lunged forward, bringing with it a foul stench. Ning Yu reacted swiftly, throwing a stone that struck the wolf squarely on the head. The stone struck the wolf's skull with a dull thud, and the wolf shook its head, letting out a low growl of pain. But its ferocity remained undiminished; the glint of its green eyes intensified as it continued its attack on Ning Yu.
Seizing the opportunity, Mu Xue thrust her wooden spear with all her might into the wolf's belly. The wolf nimbly dodged the spear tip, the sharp point only grazing its ribs, but then bit into the shaft. Mu Xue pulled hard, trying to wrest the spear back, and the struggle continued. The spear shaft creaked under the strain, on the verge of breaking.
"Let go!" Ning Yu shouted, grabbed another stone from the ground, and smashed it towards the wolf's head.
The wolf, in pain, released its grip, and Mu Xue snatched the wooden spear back. It roared angrily, circling twice, seemingly weighing its next attack. Blood seeped from the wound on its ribs, staining its gray fur red, adding to its ferocious appearance.
Ning Yu wanted to go help, but just then, the other wolves seemed to be encouraged and began to slowly surround them. Pairs of green eyes flickered in the darkness, like will-o'-the-wisps, sending chills down their spines. Ning Yu's heart tightened; he knew that being surrounded by the wolves would be disastrous.
"Damn it!" Ning Yu cursed under his breath. He looked around, searching for any terrain he could use. The cave entrance was narrow, easy to defend but difficult to attack, but if the wolves swarmed in, they would have a hard time holding them off.
"We have to find a way to break through," Mu Xue said breathlessly, gripping her wooden spear tightly and watching the surrounding wolf pack warily. Her arms ached from the fight, but she dared not relax for a moment.
Suddenly, Ning Yu's gaze fell upon a huge rock deep within the cave. The rock had a peculiar shape, narrow at the bottom and wide at the top, resembling an inverted umbrella. Climbing onto the rock might offer temporary refuge from the wolf pack's attack.
"Mu Xue, let's go behind that rock!" Ning Yu said, pointing to the boulder.
Mu Xue followed Ning Yu's gaze and understood his meaning. She nodded, and the two carefully moved towards the boulder, trying not to make a sound. The wolf pack seemed to sense their intentions and began to stir restlessly, their low growls rising and falling.
Just as they were about to reach the boulder, Ning Yu sensed the dark shadow flash by again, this time more clearly. He whirled around, but still saw nothing, only the rustling of the bushes in the wind. A nameless fear welled up inside him; he sensed that besides the wolves, something else was lurking in the shadows, watching them.
"Ning Yu, what's wrong?" Mu Xue noticed Ning Yu's unusual behavior and asked in a low voice.
Ning Yu didn't answer, but shook his head solemnly, his gaze fixed on the surrounding bushes, his hand gripping a stone tightly. He sensed danger approaching step by step, a danger far more terrifying than the wolf pack.
