Taking advantage of the opportunity, Ning Yu suddenly pulled his bitten arm away, blood gushing out. Ignoring the pain, he swung his knife and killed the struggling gray wolf on the ground.
"Ning Yu!" Mu Xue rushed to his side anxiously, tearing off a piece of her own clothing to bandage his wound.
"Don't worry about me, get out of here!" Ning Yu grabbed Mu Xue's wrist, his face pale, but his tone unusually firm. The tremors behind them grew stronger, the pebbles on the ground shook slightly, and a suffocating sense of oppression enveloped them.
He knew that the mutated pangolin was about to emerge.
The wolves did not back down because of the death of their companion; instead, they were aroused to their ferocity. They howled in unison, their green eyes gleaming with a bloodthirsty light in the dim light, as they approached the two step by step.
"There's no time to bandage it." Ning Yu glanced at his still-bleeding arm, took a deep breath, and gripped the dagger tightly in his hand. "Back to back, let's fight our way out!"
Mu Xue didn't speak, but nodded vigorously, gripping the wooden spear in her hand even tighter. With her back against Ning Yu, she warily watched the surrounding wolf pack, ready to respond to their attack at any moment.
The two stood back to back, forming a simple defensive formation. Ning Yu's dagger was as fast as lightning, each swing taking the life of a wolf. Although Mu Xue's wooden spear was not as sharp as her dagger, she also managed to take down several wolves with her agile movements and precise attacks.
However, the wolf pack was simply too numerous; one wave was killed only to be replaced by another, seemingly endless. Ning Yu's strength was rapidly waning, his breathing was becoming increasingly rapid, and the wound on his arm was burning with pain.
Just then, the ground behind them suddenly cracked open, and a huge figure emerged from the ground. It was the mutated pangolin! It was enormous, covered in thick scales, and its scarlet eyes were fixed on Ning Yu and Mu Xue, letting out a deafening roar.
"A pincer attack!" Mu Xue exclaimed in surprise.
Ning Yu's face grew even paler. He knew they were now in dire straits. Wolf packs stood in front, and mutated pangolins lurked behind; they had nowhere to escape.
But he did not give up; instead, a resolute flame ignited in his eyes.
“Mu Xue,” Ning Yu’s voice was low and hoarse, “we…” He paused, his gaze fixed on the weakest link in the wolf pack, “charge that way!”
Ning Yu and Mu Xue exchanged a glance, their eyes filled with determination. Without the slightest hesitation, the two simultaneously unleashed astonishing power, launching a fierce attack on a relatively sparse area on the right side of the wolf pack.
Ning Yu's daggers transformed into streaks of cold light, precisely piercing the vital points of each approaching gray wolf. He no longer held back his strength, using all his power in every attack. The wolf blood stained with his daggers splattered with each movement, drawing shocking arcs of blood in the air.
Mu Xue also unleashed astonishing fighting power. Although a section of her wooden spear was broken, she wielded it with ferocious force, each strike carrying a ruthless edge. She moved nimbly through the wolf pack, like a nimble cheetah, constantly searching for openings to attack.
The two worked in perfect coordination, covering each other and managing to tear a gap in the wolf pack's encirclement. Seeing a glimmer of hope for escape, Ning Yu and Mu Xue gritted their teeth and charged forward with all their might.
However, just as they were about to break through, the mutated pangolin let out a deafening roar and its massive body slammed into them. The ground shook violently, and debris flew everywhere. Ning Yu and Mu Xue were caught off guard and were thrown back by the powerful impact, almost falling to the ground.
"Damn it!" Ning Yu cursed under his breath as the wound on his arm reopened, and blood flowed down his arm.
The mutated pangolin gave them no chance to breathe. Its huge claws slammed into the ground, kicking up a cloud of dust and gravel, completely blocking Ning Yu and Mu Xue's escape route.
The wolves seized the opportunity to surround them again, howling excitedly as they stared greedily at their prey, their green eyes gleaming with bloodlust.
Ning Yu and Mu Xue were forced back to their original positions, back to back, surrounded by a pack of ferocious wolves and a giant mutated pangolin, finding themselves in an even more dangerous situation.
They were breathing heavily, and had multiple injuries. Mu Xue's wooden spear had also broken completely in the battle, leaving only half of it.
“It seems…” Ning Yu’s voice was hoarse, with a hint of bitterness in it, “we have really been driven into a corner.”
He looked up at the sky; the gray sky held no sunlight, only endless despair.
Just then, a cold, mechanical voice suddenly rang in Ning Yu's mind: "Host's life is in imminent danger, emergency plan activated..."
Ning Yu was suddenly stunned, a glimmer of hope flashing in his eyes.
"System?" he murmured to himself, "Is it you?"
"Activate the energy shield..." the system's voice sounded again.
A pale blue light suddenly emanated from Ning Yu, forming a semi-transparent energy shield that enveloped him and Mu Xue. The wolf pack's attacks struck the shield with muffled thuds, but failed to penetrate its defenses.
“It seems…” Mu Xue looked at this sudden change, a barely perceptible smile appearing on her lips, “we still have a chance…”
However, at that moment, the mutated pangolin suddenly let out a deafening roar, its scarlet eyes fixed on them, and its massive body slowly rose up...
"Ning Yu..." Mu Xue's voice trembled slightly, "Be careful..."
