The creature took another step forward, and its form finally emerged from the shadows. It was a reptile, a colossal behemoth of scales and muscle, its eyes gleaming with a cold, predatory intelligence. Its head, adorned with bony ridges and spikes, was larger than a car, and its jaws, filled with rows of sharp teeth, snapped with a nauseating thud. A deep roar emanated from its throat, a sound that resonated deep within its chest.
The rats scattered in all directions, their fear temporarily overpowering their hunger. They scrambled over each other, desperate to escape the presence of this new apex predator. Some rats were crushed to death by the creature's enormous feet, their terrified squeaks abruptly silenced.
Ning Yu saw their opportunity. The creature was focused on its newly discovered prey and seemed oblivious to their presence in the corner of the cave. He pulled Mu Xue closer, his eyes glancing towards the cave entrance.
"We have to go," he said urgently in a low voice. "Now."
He crouched low, using the scurrying rats as cover, and pulled Mu Xue along. She followed behind, her eyes wide with fear, but her movements were surprisingly swift. They moved slowly and cautiously toward the faint light filtering in from outside. The creature's attention was entirely focused on the fleeing rats; its massive tail swept through the burrow, scattering debris and crushing any unfortunate rodents that stood in its way.
When they were almost halfway to the entrance, a large rock, swept off by the creature's tail, rolled down and crashed to the ground a few feet away from them. The creature abruptly turned its head toward them, its glowing eyes staring at them with terrifying intensity. It let out a deafening roar that seemed to tear the cave walls apart.
Ning Yu froze, his heart pounding in his chest. He met the creature's gaze, his mind frantically searching for a solution, a way out. He knew clearly and chillingly that they were no longer being ignored.
“Hmm,” the creature said in a low voice, a deep, resonant roar that echoed through the cave, “Looks like we’ll have dessert.”
