After the test, Ning Yu was no longer surrounded by mockery and doubt, but by an even more unsettling silence. The gazes people gave him were complex and difficult to decipher, containing shock, doubt, and even more so, suspicion and fear.
“Those rumors…may be true.” Someone in the crowd whispered, like a pebble thrown into a calm lake, creating ripples.
Rumors about Ning Yu's illegitimate origins initially circulated secretly within the camp, but as time went on, the rumors became increasingly outrageous, with some even claiming he was connected to predatory alien creatures. At first, Ning Yu paid no attention, believing that rumors would be dispelled by the wise, and that his strength and actions would eventually shatter these absurd claims. However, he underestimated the destructive power of rumors; like a plague, they sowed seeds of fear and doubt in people's hearts.
Ning Yu's prestige faced an unprecedented challenge. Those who once admired him now pointed fingers at him and even deliberately distanced themselves. Wherever he went, he could feel strange gazes fixed on him, as if he were a monster.
To stop the rumors from spreading further, Ning Yu decided to take the initiative. He approached Dr. Zhao, a highly respected scientist in the camp who was passionate about researching supernatural abilities, hoping he could help investigate the source of the rumors.
“Mr. Ning, rest assured, I will do my best to investigate this matter thoroughly.” Dr. Zhao adjusted his glasses, a glint of shrewdness flashing in his eyes. “However, as you know, the hardest thing about rumors is finding their source, and…”
He paused, as if organizing his thoughts, "Right now, there's a lot of panic in the camp. Many people would rather believe those sensational rumors than the truth. So, the investigation will take time, and you should be prepared for that."
Ning Yu understood what Dr. Zhao meant, but he had no choice but to place his hopes on him.
"Then I'll leave it to you, Dr. Zhao," Ning Yu said sincerely.
"I'll do my best." Dr. Zhao nodded and watched Ning Yu leave the laboratory.
After leaving the laboratory, Ning Yu did not immediately return to his residence, but instead wandered aimlessly alone in the camp. As the sun set, his shadow stretched exceptionally long.
"Brother Ning, what are you doing here all alone?" A cheerful voice rang in my ears.
Ning Yu looked up and saw Brother Wu walking towards him with a kind smile on his face. Brother Wu was a long-time resident of the camp and one of the first people to awaken his superpowers. He was a righteous person and had always taken good care of Ning Yu.
"Brother Wu, what brings you here?" Ning Yu forced a smile.
“I heard…” Brother Wu hesitated, then finally sighed, “Don’t take it to heart, those rumors are all nonsense, I believe you.”
"Thank you, Brother Wu." Ning Yu felt a warmth in his heart, but then a sense of powerlessness welled up inside him.
"Those who spread rumors are despicable! I'm going to confront them!" Brother Wu said indignantly, making a move to find someone to settle accounts with.
"Don't be impulsive, Brother Wu!" Ning Yu quickly pulled him back. "We still don't know who is spreading rumors behind the scenes. Taking rash action will only alert them."
"But……"
"Don't worry, I'll handle this." Ning Yu patted Brother Wu on the shoulder and said firmly.
However, unbeknownst to him, a much larger storm was brewing. That very night, Brother Wu was… “But those bastards went too far! How could they slander you like that!” Brother Wu’s face flushed red, and the veins on his thick arms bulged, clearly his anger was still burning.
Ning Yu understood that Brother Wu was standing up for her, and she was touched, but she still advised, "Brother Wu, calm down. The innocent will prove themselves. I will prove myself."
Brother Wu wanted to say something more, but in the end he sighed, patted Ning Yu on the shoulder, and said, "Sigh, you're just too easygoing, which is why those people take advantage of you!"
After seeing Brother Wu off, Ning Yu returned to his residence with a heavy heart. He knew he couldn't just sit and wait to die any longer; the rumors were like a snowball, growing bigger and bigger until they would eventually engulf him completely. He had to take the initiative and prove his innocence.
After much deliberation, Ning Yu decided to ignore the baseless rumors and prove himself through action. He planned to hold a public demonstration of his abilities the following day, letting everyone witness his strength and shatter those absurd lies.
The next day, a large crowd gathered in the open space in the center of the camp, all there to watch Ning Yu demonstrate his supernatural abilities. The crowd buzzed with discussion, some expectant, some skeptical, and some even gloating.
Ning Yu stood in the center of the crowd, took a deep breath, and tried to remain calm. He mobilized his supernatural abilities, preparing to demonstrate them. However, at that moment, he felt an inexplicable force suddenly appear, like invisible shackles, tightly binding his abilities and preventing him from fully unleashing his power.
"What's going on?" Ning Yu was startled, and fine beads of sweat appeared on his forehead. He tried hard to break through the suppression of that power, but the effect was not ideal, and the output of his superpower was significantly weaker than usual.
A commotion began to rise in the crowd as people noticed Ning Yu's unusual behavior, and the discussions grew louder.
"What's wrong? Ning Yu looks like he's having a hard time."
"Could those rumors be true? Is there really something wrong with his superpower?"
"I knew it! He must be with those monsters..."
Hearing the increasingly harsh voices of doubt around him, Ning Yu was extremely anxious. He gritted his teeth and tried to activate his supernatural power again, but that invisible force was like a leech, impossible to shake off.
