Chapter 49: Facing imminent danger, turning the tide.

"Monkey! Lynx! Eagle Eye!" Ning Yu hissed as he called out his companions' codenames, his heart feeling as if it were being gripped tightly by an invisible hand. There was no response from the communicator, only a chilling hissing sound.

"Damn it!" He slammed his fist against the wall, sending pebbles raining down. The force of the blow made the air around him tremble slightly, but it did nothing to quell the anxiety in his heart.

Without a second thought, Ning Yu immediately set off, sprinting towards the location of the stronghold. Moving at high speed, he became a blurry afterimage, sweeping across the desolate ruins, leaving behind a whistling sound.

However, the enemy was clearly well-prepared.

Having run less than halfway, Ning Yu suddenly felt a strange sense of crisis. He abruptly stopped, his eyes blazing as he scanned the seemingly empty wilderness ahead.

"Buzz..."

A slight energy fluctuation emanated from the air, almost imperceptible. But to Ning Yu at this moment, this subtle change was as conspicuous as a firelight in the darkness.

"Energy mines!" Ning Yu's heart skipped a beat. These specially modified weapons could sense the energy fluctuations generated when living beings approached and release a devastating energy shock in an instant. Even with his current strength, he dared not take it head-on.

"Hmph, a mere trick." Ning Yu sneered, a hint of contempt flashing in his eyes. He tried to mobilize the newly generated power within his body, sensing the changes in the surrounding magnetic field, attempting to find the deadly traps hidden in the shadows.

The energy fluctuations, imperceptible to the naked eye, gradually became clearer to his senses, spreading out like ripples on the surface of water. He carefully adjusted his pace, avoiding those deadly "ripples," and slowly advanced towards his target.

However, he soon discovered that things were not as simple as he had imagined. The surrounding energy fluctuations became increasingly chaotic, as if an invisible force was interfering with his perception.

"What's going on?" Ning Yu frowned, a sense of unease rising in his heart. He vaguely sensed that he had stepped into an elaborate trap, one far more complex than he had imagined...

"Looks like you've discovered my 'masterpiece'." A hoarse voice suddenly came from behind a nearby boulder, tinged with a hint of mockery. "How about it? Not bad, is my new toy?"

"Come out! What kind of skill is it to hide your head and tail!" Ning Yu shouted in a deep voice, his sharp eyes scanning the surroundings. However, apart from the howling wind and the distant roars of beasts, there was no other sound.

"Heh, Ning Yu, you're still as impatient as ever." That hoarse voice rang out again, seemingly coming from all directions, making it hard to fathom. "But guess what happened to your lovely companions when you found me? Were they alive or dead?"

Ning Yu's heart sank upon hearing this. He suppressed his anger and said coldly, "Who exactly are you? Why are you attacking us?"

"After you die, someone will tell you." The voice didn't answer his question, but continued in a mocking tone, "Right now, worry about yourself."

As soon as he finished speaking, the energy fluctuations around Ning Yu suddenly became more intense, and the originally clear "ripples" became blurry, as if they had been disturbed by something.

"Not good!" Ning Yu thought to himself. He knew that the enemy was deliberately interfering with his senses.

Without a second thought, Ning Yu immediately held his breath and maximized his perception, trying to find the hidden deadly traps in the chaotic energy fluctuations.

However, the enemy's methods were clearly beyond his expectations. Even with all his mental focus, he found it difficult to accurately pinpoint the location of the landmines.

"boom!"

With a loud bang, the ground beneath Ning Yu's feet suddenly cracked open, and a powerful shockwave threw him high into the air before he crashed heavily to the ground more than ten meters away.

"Cough cough..." Ning Yu struggled to get up from the ground, feeling excruciating pain all over his body and his blood churning within him. He knew that he had underestimated the enemy's strength.

"Looks like you're nothing special after all." The hoarse voice rang out again, tinged with sarcasm. "There's more to come."

Before he could finish speaking, Ning Yu suddenly heard a series of low roars coming from ahead, and the ground trembled slightly, as if some enormous creature was approaching him.

Ning Yu endured the pain in his body and looked up. In the dim light ahead, he saw pairs of eyes flashing with a ghostly green light. They were cold, fierce, and sent chills down his spine.

"Mutant creatures?!" Ning Yu's heart skipped a beat. He realized he was truly in deep trouble this time. The mutated creatures roared deafeningly, carrying a nauseating stench, and surged forward like a tidal wave. They varied in shape, but were all twisted and terrifying, their sharp teeth and claws gleaming coldly. They had clearly been deliberately modified and were far more ferocious than any mutated creature Ning Yu had ever encountered before.

"Kill!" Ning Yu shouted in a low voice, not daring to be careless in the slightest. His figure moved like a ghost, and several wind blades condensed in his hands, extremely sharp, instantly cutting several mutated creatures that pounced on him into pieces. However, more mutated creatures rushed towards him one after another, fearlessly attacking him.

Ning Yu fought and retreated, his suspicions growing ever stronger. These mutated creatures were not only incredibly powerful, but also coordinated perfectly, their attacks ruthless and aimed directly at his vital points. What unsettled him even more was that his enemies seemed to know him very well, always able to predict his attack patterns and put him on the defensive.

"Could it be..." A terrifying thought flashed through Ning Yu's mind, "Could there be a traitor among us?"
