Chapter 5 Food Shortages and a Dire Situation

Ning Yu's vision was beginning to blur, but he still stubbornly stared at A-Qiang, his eyes filled with defiance and anger.

"Let go of me!" Just then, a cold voice rang out from not far away.

A-Qiang was stunned for a moment, then turned his head and saw a tall woman wearing a black leather jacket standing on the ruins, holding a sharp dagger in her hand, looking at him coldly.

"Who are you?" A-Qiang asked warily, sensing a dangerous aura emanating from the woman.

The woman ignored him and turned her gaze to Ning Yu, asking, "Are you alright?"

"I'm fine..." Ning Yu said weakly, knowing he was saved.

"You..." A-Qiang was furious. He had never been ignored like this before. Just as he was about to lash out, he suddenly felt a gust of evil wind coming from behind him.

Before he could react, a giant mutated rat pounced on his back, its sharp claws tearing several gashes in his leather coat, and blood gushed out immediately.

"Ah!" A-Qiang screamed in agony as he struggled desperately to shake off the mutated rat, but the rat held on tightly to him.

The other mutated rats swarmed around A-Qiang, tearing at him frantically.

Ning Yu took the opportunity to crawl out from under A-Qiang. He endured the excruciating pain and tried to stand up, but found that he had no strength left.

"Run!" the woman shouted to Ning Yu, "I'll hold them off!"

Ning Yu knew this was not the time to be reckless. He struggled to his feet and stumbled as he ran away into the distance.

"Trying to run? Not so easy!" Although Ah Qiang was entangled by the mutated rats, he still did not give up the pursuit of Ning Yu. He shouted loudly, directing the other mutated rats to chase after Ning Yu.

In a panic, Ning Yu dodged into an abandoned ventilation duct. The mutated rat was too big to fit inside and could only growl angrily from the duct entrance.

Ah Qiang chased after him to the pipe entrance and shouted into the pipe, "Kid, come out here! Don't think you're safe hiding in there! I'll catch you sooner or later!"

Ning Yu ignored him and continued to climb deeper into the pipe. He knew that only by finding a safe place to hide as soon as possible could he survive.

The pipe was pitch black, so dark you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. Ning Yu could only grope his way forward by feeling.

Suddenly, his hand touched something cold and hard… The icy touch sent a chill down Ning Yu's spine. He felt around for a moment and discovered it was a metal box, firmly fixed to the pipe wall. This discovery ignited a glimmer of hope in Ning Yu's heart; perhaps this was a window that fate had opened for him in his desperate situation.

Outside the pipe, A-Qiang continued his defiant roars, the hissing of the mutated rats rising and falling, creating a symphony of absurd post-apocalyptic chaos. However, Ning Yu could no longer hear them; his entire attention was drawn to the box before him.

He fumbled around in the box and found a rusty lock. With a forceful pull, the lock snapped open. Opening the box, a faint musty smell wafted out. In the dim light, Ning Yu saw that the box contained some canned goods!

Although these canned goods were quite old, the packaging was intact, and the food inside should still be edible. Ning Yu was overjoyed, hugging the cans tightly to his chest as if they were the most precious treasures in the world.

"Damn it! That kid must be hiding inside!" Outside the pipe, A-Qiang still hadn't given up. He angrily kicked the pipe, making a loud "bang," as if venting his dissatisfaction.

Ning Yu ignored him; he knew it wasn't time to leave yet. He put the canned food into his backpack and continued climbing deeper into the pipe, trying to find a safer place to escape A-Qiang's pursuit.

After an unknown amount of time, Ning Yu finally emerged from the other end of the pipe. He found himself in an abandoned factory, surrounded by dilapidated machinery and mountains of garbage, with a pungent chemical smell permeating the air.

Ning Yu dared not linger. He checked his bearings and headed towards the temporary shelter. He had to get back as soon as possible; someone was waiting for him there…

As the sun set, Ning Yu's lonely shadow stretched long. He dragged his weary steps toward home, clutching tightly in his hands the few cans of hard-earned food...
