In the dim light, the breadcrumbs were covered in green mold and emitted a pungent, putrid odor. Ning Yu's heart sank. These moldy breadcrumbs were nauseating, let alone edible; just smelling them for a while was enough to make one want to vomit.
Undeterred, he began searching the equipment room, checking every corner, under piles of tools, and even abandoned toolboxes, hoping to find some edible food.
However, reality proved harsh. Apart from the moldy breadcrumbs, he found no trace of any other food.
"Could it be that the previous survivors only left behind this little bit of stuff?" Ning Yu was filled with doubt and unease.
He slowly stood up, supporting himself against the wall, and looked around in the light of his flashlight. The equipment room wasn't large; every corner was clearly visible, leaving no place to hide food.
"This amount of food is not enough to last three days..." Ning Yu thought to himself, he had to find more food as soon as possible, otherwise he would only starve to death.
He took a deep breath, his eyes gradually hardening.
"We can't just sit here and wait to die!"
Ning Yu opened the iron door of the equipment room and cautiously peered outside. The subway station was deathly silent, with only the corpses of a few mutated rats lying haphazardly on the ground.
He gripped the steel pipe tightly, crouched low, and moved slowly along the wall, his eyes constantly scanning the surrounding environment.
"Food...food..."
Ning Yu muttered to himself as he carefully searched for any possible source of food. Suddenly, his gaze was drawn to a pile of ruins not far away.
The pile of ruins should have been a small supermarket, but it has now been reduced to rubble by a bomb. Scattered around the edge of the ruins are some cardboard boxes and plastic bags, and some food packaging can be vaguely seen.
"There is hope!"
A glimmer of hope ignited in Ning Yu's heart. He gripped the steel pipe tightly and ran quickly toward the pile of rubble.
He carefully brushed aside the surface rubble and began digging through the ruins.
"Splash—"
A metal box rolled out of the rubble. Ning Yu picked it up and saw that it was a sealed biscuit tin. He couldn't wait to open the box and found that there was still half a tin of compressed biscuits left inside.
"Very good!"
Ning Yu was overjoyed. He hugged the cookie box tightly to his chest, as if he were holding a rare treasure.
Just as he was excitedly preparing to continue digging, a rough, hoarse voice suddenly rang out from behind him:
"Boy, put down what you're holding!"
Ning Yu turned around abruptly and saw a burly man standing behind him, his face full of scars and his eyes fierce. He was wearing a tattered leather jacket and carrying a rusty steel bar, looking like someone not to be trifled with.
"What...what do you want to do?" Ning Yu asked warily, instinctively taking a few steps back.
"Enough with the nonsense!" the man said menacingly. "Hand over everything you've found!"
"I found this myself!" Ning Yu clutched the cookie box tightly to his chest. "Why should I give it to you?"
The man sneered, spat on the ground, and said slowly, "Because I'm stronger than you! In this apocalypse, might makes right!"
As he spoke, he whistled loudly. From the shadows of the ruins, several large mutated rats came running at the sound, their green eyes staring straight at Ning Yu, making squeaking noises that sent chills down one's spine.
"Go! Bite him!" At the man's command, the mutated rat swarm pounced on Ning Yu like arrows released from a bow.
Ning Yu was startled. These mutated rats were enormous with sharp teeth; being bitten by one would be no joke. He quickly dodged, while simultaneously swinging the steel pipe in his hand, knocking the leading mutated rat to the ground.
"Squeak!"
Enraged, the other mutated rats lunged at Ning Yu with even greater ferocity. Ning Yu dodged left and right, struggling to fend off the rat swarm's attacks, finding himself in a perilous situation.
"Kid, let's see how long you can last!" the man said smugly. He didn't rush forward, but stood aside, coldly enjoying Ning Yu's disheveled appearance.
While dodging the attacks of the rat swarm, Ning Yu searched for an opportunity to counterattack, and at the same time had to be wary of the man's sneak attacks. He was constantly on the move.
There were too many mutated rats, and they were fearless. Ning Yu gradually felt his strength failing, and his movements began to slow down.
"Now!" The man seized the opportunity, rushed forward, raised the steel bar high, and slammed it down hard on Ning Yu's back.
Ning Yu couldn't dodge in time and could only watch helplessly as the steel bar hurtled towards him... In the nick of time, Ning Yu instinctively rolled to the side, barely avoiding the fatal blow. The steel bar slammed heavily onto the ground with a loud "bang," kicking up a cloud of dust.
Before Ning Yu could catch his breath, A-Qiang had already pounced on him, kicking him in the chest and knocking him to the ground. Ning Yu felt a sharp pain in his chest, as if his ribs were about to break. He curled up in agony, powerless to resist.
"Damn it, you're pretty good at dodging!" Ah Qiang straddled Ning Yu, raining down punches on him as he cursed, "I'll show you today that in this world, only the strong have the right to live!"
Ning Yu was beaten black and blue, a trickle of blood flowing from the corner of his mouth, but he gritted his teeth and didn't utter a sound. He knew that if he showed weakness, it would truly be the end. He clutched the cookie box in his arms tightly; it was his last hope.
"Still so tough!" Seeing that Ning Yu was beaten so badly but still wouldn't let go, A-Qiang became even more furious. He grabbed Ning Yu's hair, lifted him off the ground, and said viciously, "I'll see how long you can keep up this stubbornness!"
