Ning Yu glanced coldly at Qin Tian, who stood frozen like a puppet, without the slightest pity. He never showed mercy to traitors. Besides, Qin Tian knew far too much.
"Clean it up thoroughly," he ordered the shadowy figure behind him, his tone icy and devoid of any emotion. The shadowy figure nodded slightly and floated towards Qin Tian like a ghost, disappearing into the night in a short while, along with Qin Tian.
Ning Yu turned around, preparing to return to the command center. The days of investigation and interrogation had left him physically and mentally exhausted. He rubbed his temples, a vague unease creeping into his heart. This spy incident felt like a boulder weighing on his mind, making it hard to breathe. He had a feeling that things weren't so simple, that a larger conspiracy was brewing behind the scenes.
Before he could even process his thoughts, a flurry of footsteps shattered the base's tranquility. A figure, drenched in sweat, burst into the command room, shouting frantically, "Boss, something's wrong! Li San and the others... Li San and the others are gone!"
Ning Yu suddenly looked up, his sharp gaze sweeping over the newcomer like a hawk's. "What's going on? Tell me slowly!"
The man took a deep breath, trying to calm himself down. "This morning, Li San and his team went on patrol in the southern district, and then we lost contact. I led a search party, but we only found their communicators; the signal was completely cut off..."
"The Southern District?" Ning Yu frowned, his unease growing stronger. The Southern District was on the edge of their territory, sparsely populated and resource-poor, but recently strange energy fluctuations had been frequently occurring, and several small teams had even mysteriously disappeared.
He immediately pulled up a map and pointed to an area on the edge of the southern district. "The last known locations of the teams that recently went missing were all here." He pointed to the blank area on the map, which resembled a giant black hole, swallowing any life that dared to approach.
"Could it be..." A terrifying thought flashed through his mind, and his expression immediately turned extremely solemn. He immediately ordered all core members to be summoned, preparing to personally go to the Southern District to investigate.
"Boss, this is too dangerous! Let's wait and find out the situation before we talk about it!" someone worriedly advised.
Ning Yu shook his head, his tone firm, "We can't wait any longer. I have a feeling that if we don't act now, it might be too late!"
He led several elite team members, fully armed, straight towards the southern district. As they ventured deeper, the surrounding scenery became increasingly desolate, and an eerie atmosphere permeated the air. An invisible pressure weighed on their hearts, making it almost impossible for them to breathe.
"Boss, the limit of our exploration is just ahead. Further ahead..." A team member pointed to the area shrouded in thick fog, his voice trembling slightly.
"Let's go!" Ning Yu didn't hesitate at all, taking the lead and stepping into the thick fog. Deep within the fog, something seemed to be waiting for them... The fog, like clumps of cotton, was cold and damp, tightly enveloping Ning Yu and his group. Visibility was less than five meters; the team members stood back to back, cautiously taking each step.
"Boss, the energy fluctuations here are getting stronger and stronger," Zhao Hu, who was walking at the front of the group, said in a low voice. The detector in his hand was flashing a blinding red light, almost off the charts.
Ning Yu focused intently on his surroundings, but could see nothing but a thick white fog. He tried to probe with his mental energy, but it was as if he had hit an invisible wall, and was bounced back by a powerful force, causing a sharp pain in his head.
"Something's wrong!" A cry of alarm came from the rear of the group, followed by the sound of clashing weapons and several muffled groans. Ning Yu immediately turned around and saw several team members being blasted away by an invisible force, crashing heavily to the ground and groaning in pain.
"Damn it! What the hell is this thing?" Zhao Hu roared, brandishing his alloy battle sword and slashing wildly forward, only to hit nothing but emptiness.
"Don't attack! Concentrate your mental energy and charge out together!" Ning Yu made a decisive decision. He knew that continuing like this would be futile. He had to find the weak point of this force in order to break through.
The team members formed a circle, concentrating their mental energy to create a powerful energy shockwave that blasted forward. The thick fog churned violently, like boiling water, emitting sharp shrieks.
However, the next second, an even more powerful force rebounded, blasting them all away. Ning Yu felt as if his internal organs were about to shift, and a mouthful of blood welled up in his throat, which he swallowed forcefully.
This failed breakout attempt resulted in heavy losses for them, with several team members seriously injured and unconscious. Worse still, as time went on, similar incidents began to occur frequently in other locations.
Panic gripped the base, and rumors spread like wildfire. Some said the southern district was cursed, others that unknown creatures had invaded, and still others suspected that Ning Yu's leadership had failed, leading to all of this.
"Boss, we can't just sit here and wait to die! Those rumors are getting more and more outrageous. If this continues, the brothers will all fall apart!" Zhao Hu said anxiously.
Ning Yu was well aware of the gravity of the situation, but he couldn't afford to lose his composure. He suppressed his unease, calming the team members while secretly delving into the clues of the mysterious events. He had a premonition that a huge secret lay hidden behind all of this, a secret that might very well be related to the future of humanity.
Late at night, Ning Yu was alone in the laboratory, carefully studying the samples he had brought back from the South District by the dim light. Suddenly, the test tube in his hand began to vibrate violently, and an invisible energy fluctuation spread out, causing the laboratory lights to flicker.
