Grandpa Sun gritted his teeth, suppressing his fear, and threw the burning tarpaulin under the load-bearing column. The dry wood was quickly ignited, and a raging fire broke out, billowing thick smoke.
"Awooo—" The mutated dog, forced back by the flames, let out an angry howl, but dared not approach easily.
Taking advantage of the situation, Ning Yu kicked another burning tarpaulin to the warehouse entrance, creating a makeshift wall of fire that temporarily halted the mutated dogs' attack.
"Old man, stop standing there! Find a way to knock down those iron frames and block the doorway!" Ning Yu wiped the blood off his face and yelled at Grandpa Sun.
Inside the warehouse, Ning Yu and Grandpa Sun sat back to back, one holding a steel pipe and the other waving a wooden stick. Around them lay the corpses of mutated dogs lying motionless on the ground, and the air was filled with a nauseating smell of blood and burnt flesh.
"Cough cough cough..." Ning Yu coughed violently. His clothes were tattered and bruised in many places, but his eyes were still sharp and he still gripped the steel pipe tightly in his hand.
He looked at Grandpa Sun, who was slumped on the ground, equally battered, and coldly uttered two words: "Canned food." Grandpa Sun's eyes widened in terror, and his body shrank back, as if Ning Yu wanted not canned food, but his life. He pointed tremblingly to the corner of the warehouse, where their last food and water were piled up, "...It's all there, I...I didn't hide it."
Ning Yu remained silent, merely staring coldly at him. Under Ning Yu's gaze, Grandpa Sun was like a frog being watched by a venomous snake, too afraid to move. He understood that in this dog-eat-dog world, Ning Yu would no longer show him any mercy.
Ning Yu walked to the corner, rummaged around, and sure enough, found that several cans of meat were missing. A cold glint flashed in his eyes, and he turned around and walked to Grandpa Sun, throwing a can of fruit at his feet. "Get lost, and don't let me see you again."
Grandpa Sun felt as if he had been granted a pardon. He scrambled to his feet, grabbed the cans from the ground, and rushed out of the warehouse without looking back. Outside the warehouse, the fire had subsided, and the corpses of several mutated dogs lay scattered on the ground, the air filled with a nauseating stench of burning flesh.
Grandpa Sun's figure quickly disappeared into the night. Ning Yu stood there, looking at the mess outside the warehouse, his heart filled with mixed emotions. He didn't know if what he had done was right or wrong, but in this apocalypse, survival was the only rule.
He dragged his weary body back to the corner of the warehouse, took stock of the remaining supplies. The food was barely enough for three days, but the water supply was running low. Ning Yu unscrewed a bottle of water, about to drink, when he suddenly stopped. As if remembering something, he abruptly looked up towards the warehouse entrance—
There, a tall figure stood silently in the night, like a ghost.
