Chapter 66 The Worries of Extreme Prosperity: Shadows Lurking

Seeing that Ning Yu was determined, the others stopped trying to dissuade him. They knew Ning Yu's character well; once he made up his mind, he would never easily change it.

Three days later, a five-man squad led by Ning Yu embarked on their journey. Each of them was a battle-hardened elite, well-equipped, and swift in action. However, the war-torn world was far more dangerous than they had imagined.

Along the way, they carefully avoided mutated creatures and radiation zones, each step fraught with danger. Despite their thorough preparations, an accident still occurred.

"Enemy attack!"

With a roar, a barrage of gunfire shattered the silence of the wilderness.

Ning Yu and his team reacted swiftly, immediately finding cover to launch a counterattack. The enemy was few in number, but their firepower was exceptionally fierce, clearly indicating they had come prepared.

"They're from 'Hyena'!" One of the team members recognized them, his face immediately turning grim. "These damned bandits, they just take advantage of people's misfortunes!"

"Stop talking nonsense, deal with them first!" Ning Yu calmly commanded the battle, his weapon spitting out deadly flames.

The fierce battle lasted for nearly half an hour, ultimately ending in the defeat of "Hyena." However, the joy of victory was quickly replaced by pain. One team member was unfortunately hit by a bullet during the battle and was seriously injured.

"Damn it! First-aid kit!" Ning Yu quickly ran to the wounded man's side, tore open his clothes, and checked his injuries.

"Captain, I..." The wounded soldier was pale and his lips trembled slightly.

"Hang in there, you'll be alright!" Ning Yu comforted him while tending to his wounds.

However, looking at the dwindling amount of medicine left in the first-aid kit, his heart sank deeper and deeper. They had to find medical supplies as soon as possible, otherwise…

After several days of searching, they finally found a glimmer of hope in an abandoned town. The map showed that it had once been a sizable city, and perhaps the supplies they needed could be found there.

"Captain, look!" a team member shouted excitedly, pointing to a building in the distance. "It looks like there's a base over there!"

Ning Yu followed his finger and saw a building half-buried in the ruins, with the words "medical center" still faintly discernible.

"Walk!"

A glimmer of hope ignited in his heart, and he immediately led his team toward their goal. However, as they approached the base gate, a strange unease welled up in their hearts.

"Wait!" Ning Yu suddenly reached out to stop everyone, his eyes scanning the surroundings warily. "It's too quiet here, unusually quiet..."

"What's wrong, Captain?"

“Something’s wrong…” Ning Yu crouched down, carefully examining the marks on the ground. “This place has been tampered with; it’s a trap!”

Before the words were finished, a soft "click" was heard, and the base gate slowly opened, revealing a dark entrance, like a giant beast waiting to devour its prey.

Ning Yu took a deep breath, a resolute glint in his eyes, and said in a deep voice, "Be careful, let's go in!"

The base gate resembled the gaping maw of a colossal beast, emanating a chilling aura. Ning Yu took a deep breath, signaling his teammates to be on high alert, before stepping into this unknown territory first.

The interior of the base was even dimmer than the outside, and the air was thick with dust and the stench of decay, making it nauseating. Various instruments and equipment were scattered all over the ground, most of them destroyed, leaving only twisted metal skeletons that silently testified to their former glory.

"Captain, look!" A member at the back of the group shone his flashlight on the ceiling, his voice tinged with fear. "What's that?"

Ning Yu suddenly looked up and saw that the ceiling was covered with tiny holes, each of which shimmered with a faint red light, like countless cold eyes, which was terrifying.

"It's an infrared sensor!" Ning Yu's heart sank, and he immediately realized that he had stepped into a carefully designed trap. "Everyone, keep in formation and try not to touch anything!"

However, his warning came too late. A member walking in the middle of the group accidentally kicked a piece of metal, the crisp sound of which was particularly jarring in the silent base.

Almost simultaneously, the red light on the ceiling suddenly brightened, and then beams of red laser light shot out from the holes, weaving a web of death that swept towards the team members.

"Get out of the way!" Ning Yu roared, his body instinctively lunging to the side, narrowly avoiding the deadly laser beam.

The other team members reacted quickly, seeking cover to take refuge. For a moment, lasers shot wildly and sparks flew everywhere in the base, making it as bright as day.

"Damn it, what kind of place is this?!" one of the team members cursed, still shaken, as he hid behind an overturned piece of equipment.

Ning Yu frowned, his eyes rapidly scanning his surroundings, trying to find a way to break the trap. He knew he couldn't just sit and wait to die; he had to find a way out as soon as possible, otherwise…

"Captain, look over there!" a team member shouted, pointing to a metal door not far away. "Maybe there's an exit there!"

Ning Yu followed his gaze, a glimmer of hope igniting in his heart. He took a deep breath and said in a low voice, "Cover me!"

Having said that, he crouched low, using the equipment as cover, and quickly moved towards the metal door. However, just as he was about to reach his target, he suddenly heard a soft "click" under his feet...
