"I am Ning Yu. As you can see, I am a superhuman, just like you." Ning Yu tried his best to make his tone sound sincere. He understood that in this era, any hint of suspicion could lead to his death.
Dr. Zhao didn't speak, but simply adjusted his glasses, his eyes behind the lenses gleaming with scrutiny. His sharp gaze seemed to pierce through Ning Yu, and the oppressive silence made Ning Yu feel uneasy.
"Awakened superpowers?" Little Brother Liu became interested. He walked over to Ning Yu and asked curiously, "When did you awaken your superpowers? What type of superpowers do you have? Tell us quickly!"
Ning Yu noticed that when Liu asked these questions, Dr. Zhao did not stop him, but stared at him intently, as if observing his every move.
“About a few months ago,” Ning Yu organized his thoughts, deciding to confess part of the story, “I remember that day…” He recalled that painful experience, his body seemingly feeling that tearing pain again, and a bead of cold sweat appeared on his forehead, “That day, I suddenly felt a splitting headache, my vision blurred, and then I lost consciousness. When I woke up…”
Ning Yu paused, took a deep breath, and continued, "I discovered that I have the ability to control flames, but this power is difficult to control. I even almost hurt myself." He spread his hands, and a small flame ignited in his palms, which then quickly went out.
When Liu Xiaodi saw this scene, his eyes were filled with surprise and envy, but Dr. Zhao remained expressionless, though his eyes behind his glasses gleamed with an inexplicable light.
“So,” Ning Yu said sincerely, looking at Dr. Zhao, “I hope to get some help from you, about how to control my superpowers, about…”
"About this world, right?" Dr. Zhao suddenly spoke, interrupting Ning Yu. He stood up, walked up to Ning Yu, and stared at him sharply. "Young man, your purpose isn't so simple, is it? Tell me, who are you, and what is your purpose here?"
Ning Yu's heart tightened; he knew Dr. Zhao had begun to suspect him. He opened his mouth, wanting to explain, but found himself speechless.
Just then, Liu Xiaodi leaned close to Dr. Zhao's ear and whispered something. Ning Yu noticed that Dr. Zhao's expression darkened further, and his gaze towards him became filled with wariness and hostility.
“Young man…” Dr. Zhao’s voice was low and cold, as if issuing a warning, “You’d better…” “Young man…” Dr. Zhao’s voice was low and cold, as if issuing a warning, “You’d better leave here immediately, otherwise…”
He didn't say what followed "otherwise," but the threat was obvious.
“Doctor, but…” Little Liu looked troubled, as if he wanted to say something, but was stopped by a sharp look from Dr. Zhao.
Ning Yu knew that any further explanation would be futile. In this apocalyptic world filled with suspicion and hostility, gaining trust was harder than climbing to heaven. He took a deep breath, trying to remain calm. He knew that the most important thing now was to dispel Dr. Zhao's doubts, otherwise he would lose his only chance.
He looked around, his gaze landing on the tattered backpack in the corner. It was all his remaining possessions, containing some food, water, and basic medicine—his last resort for survival in this cruel world.
Ning Yu walked over without hesitation, opened his backpack, and emptied out everything inside. A few compressed biscuits, a small bottle of murky water, some bandages and anti-inflammatory medicine looked particularly pitiful in the dim light.
“This is all I have,” Ning Yu said, looking directly into Dr. Zhao’s eyes, his tone sincere and firm. “I came here with no ill intentions. I just hope to find a place where I can survive and learn how to control my powers so that I don’t become a monster…”
He paused, then handed the compressed biscuits in his hand to Dr. Zhao. "If you don't believe me, I can leave all of these to you, I just ask that you give me a chance..."
Dr. Zhao looked at the cookies in Ning Yu's hand, then at his sincere eyes, and his expression finally softened. He remained silent for a moment, then slowly took the cookies and placed them on the table beside him.
"What do you want to know?" Dr. Zhao's voice was still low, but his tone was no longer as cold as before.
Ning Yu was overjoyed; he knew he had made the right bet.
“I want to know,” Ning Yu took a deep breath and said slowly, “about this world, about superpowers, about…”
Before he could finish speaking, Dr. Zhao suddenly turned and walked deeper into the room, leaving behind the words, "Come with me."
Ning Yu's heart suddenly raced. He clenched his fists tightly and then followed without hesitation.
In the narrow passage, there was only dim lighting and the heavy breathing of the two people.
At the end of the passage was a heavy iron door. Dr. Zhao skillfully entered the password, and with a mechanical roar, the iron door slowly opened, revealing a more spacious area.
The room was filled with various instruments and equipment, with flashing lights and dynamic digital displays making Ning Yu feel as if he were in a secret laboratory from a science fiction movie. Dr. Zhao walked to a workbench and gestured for Ning Yu to sit down.
"What do you want to know?" Dr. Zhao asked, his voice tinged with weariness, as he tidied the documents on the table.
Ning Yu composed himself and blurted out all the questions that had been on his mind: "I want to know why I suddenly possessed this power, I want to know what exactly happened to this world, I want to know..."
Dr. Zhao listened patiently, and only after Ning Yu finished speaking did he slowly say, "The 'power' you mentioned, we call 'superpowers,' which are the result of human genetic mutations. As for why you possess superpowers, there is currently no definitive answer..."
