The energy shield glowed a faint blue, temporarily holding off the frenzied wolf pack. Ning Yu and Mu Xue, back to back, were trapped within the shield's dim light, like a lone boat tossed about in a storm. They gasped for breath, their lungs burning with pain; each breath felt like tearing at their wounds. Mu Xue's wooden spear was reduced to half, the broken pieces jagged and painful to hold.
The wolves seemed to know they were at their last gasp, and their attacks became even more ferocious. Gray figures darted back and forth outside the shield, emitting low growls, their green eyes gleaming with greed. They repeatedly rammed into the shield, causing the blue light to dim further, as if it might shatter at any moment.
"This shield... won't last long." Ning Yu's voice was hoarse and weak, sweat mixed with blood dripping from his forehead. He gripped the dagger tightly in his hand, the veins on the back of his hand bulging, but he could feel his strength slowly draining away.
Mu Xue didn't speak, but gripped the broken wooden spear in her hand even tighter, her eyes coldly fixed on the surrounding wolf pack. Her body was torn in several places by wolf claws, blood soaking her clothes, but she seemed oblivious to the pain, mechanically remaining on guard.
A particularly robust gray wolf, its eyes gleaming with ferocity, took a few steps back, then leaped forward, its sharp claws aimed straight for Mu Xue's throat. Mu Xue was too weak to dodge and could only watch helplessly as the wolf's claws closed in.
In the nick of time, Ning Yu used his last bit of strength to pull Mu Xue behind him. He had no time to dodge and was pounced on by the gray wolf, falling to the ground. The shield cracked with a crisp "crack" from the violent impact.
Seeing this, the wolves pounced even more frantically. Ning Yu protected his throat with his arms, struggling desperately against the gray wolf that was pinning him down. He felt the excruciating pain of the wolf claws tearing at his flesh, heard the howls of the pack rising and falling, and smelled the strong stench of blood.
"Ning Yu!" Mu Xue's exclamation pierced the chaos. She struggled to get up, only to find that her legs were numb and she couldn't muster any strength.
More wolves surged forward, completely engulfing Ning Yu. Mu Xue watched in despair, her eyes filled with pain and helplessness. With all her might, she plunged the broken wooden spear fiercely into the nearest wolf…
The sound of the shield shattering completely echoed clearly in the silent wilderness...
"Don't...come any closer..."
Seeing this, Ning Yu used his last bit of strength to pull Mu Xue behind him, but he was then viciously pounced on by the large gray wolf and knocked to the ground. Sharp claws tore several bloody gashes into his arm, the excruciating pain causing him to groan involuntarily. He clutched his throat tightly with his arm, feeling the wolf's stench spraying onto his face, a wave of despair washing over him. He knew that if his throat was bitten off, it would all be over.
Mu Xue watched helplessly as Ning Yu was pounced on by the wolf, her heart clenching with pain. Ignoring the numerous wounds torn by the wolf's claws and her almost numb legs, she struggled to get up. Her gaze swept over the rubble scattered on the ground, and a glimmer of hope ignited in her heart. With trembling hands, she grabbed a sharp rock and, with all her might, smashed it at the gray wolf that was pinning Ning Yu down.
"Awooo—"
The stone struck the gray wolf on the head, causing it to howl in pain and release its grip on Ning Yu's arm. Ning Yu seized the opportunity, shoving the wolf away and staggering to his feet. He was covered in blood, his clothes torn to shreds, looking like a blood-soaked figure.
"Ning Yu!" Mu Xue's voice trembled slightly as she endured the pain and crawled toward Ning Yu.
Ning Yu looked at Mu Xue, his heart filled with guilt and heartache. He reached out, wanting to help Mu Xue, but found that his hand was trembling uncontrollably and he couldn't muster any strength.
"Hurry up and go..." Ning Yu's voice was hoarse and weak. He glanced at the pack of wolves eyeing them menacingly and knew that they had no hope of escaping.
"No, I won't leave!" Mu Xue shook her head stubbornly. She crawled to Ning Yu's side, grabbed his arm tightly, and her eyes were filled with determination. "If we're going to die, we'll die together!"
Looking into Mu Xue's resolute eyes, Ning Yu felt a surge of warmth in his heart. He knew how rare it was to have such a partner who would share life and death with him in this cruel apocalypse.
However, more wolves surrounded them, letting out low growls, their green eyes gleaming with greed. Ning Yu and Mu Xue stood back to back, gripping their weapons tightly, making a final stand.
A gray wolf suddenly pounced on Ning Yu. He thrust his dagger into the wolf's belly, but lacking the strength, the dagger only pierced the wolf's fur shallowly. The wolf let out an angry roar and opened its blood-red mouth to bite Ning Yu's neck.
At the critical moment, a dark figure suddenly descended from the sky and kicked the gray wolf away.
"Stop!" A cold voice rang out in the silent wilderness...
Ning Yu's arm was numb; the dagger slipped from his hand and fell to the ground with a dull thud. More wolves swarmed around, letting out low growls, their green eyes flashing like will-o'-the-wisps in the dim light, greedily eyeing their nearly exhausted prey. A chill ran through Ning Yu's heart. Was he really going to die in the wolves' bellies today? He weakly shielded Mu Xue behind him, and with his last ounce of strength, he growled, "Run... don't worry about me..."
Mu Xue gripped Ning Yu's clothes tightly, tears blurring her vision. Her wounds burned, but she felt nothing; only despair overwhelmed her like a tidal wave. "I won't leave..." she choked out, her voice barely a whisper, "If we die, we die together..."
