Ning Wan and Ning Yanshu stared at each other, bewildered.
Xu Xiufeng felt that the scene was awkward and not suitable for her to stay there any longer.
"Um, Yanshu's mother," Xu Xiufeng said, preparing to take her leave, "I'll head back now if there's nothing else. Old Zhao is still waiting for me to come home and cook."
"Okay, thank you for your hard work today, Brother Zhao."
...
After Xu Xiufeng left, only Ning Wan, Ning Yanshu, and the strange man in front of them remained in the corridor.
This is her territory; the neighbors are all around.
As long as she shouted, someone would come at any moment. Ning Wan felt she had nothing to fear from him.
But the man's tall, muscular physique still made Ning Wan feel inexplicably pressured.
He is very tall.
He must be almost 1.85 meters tall.
It was the height of summer in June, yet the man was wearing an inappropriate shirt and trousers.
His clothes were dirty and tattered; the original color of his shirt was no longer discernible.
Even the only exposed part, her hands, looked extremely dirty and messy.
The man's hair was long, hanging down his head and covering most of his face. The stubble on his chin stood straight up, making him look extremely unkempt.
Through his long bangs, Ning Wan could barely make out his eyes.
Those were long, narrow phoenix eyes.
His eyes were sharp, as if he could see through everything.
But when Ning Wan blinked and looked at him again...
The man's eyes, which had been filled with hostility, faded, and his gaze became clear and innocent.
It looks harmless.
Ning Wan scrutinized the other person several times.
She asked Ning Yanshu, "Where did you pick up this homeless man?"
“He is my father,” Ning Yanshu insisted.
Ning Wan frowned.
She immediately ruled out the possibility that the man in front of her was Chen Fu.
How could the rich, handsome, and fastidious villain in the novel possibly be the ragged, unkempt man in front of me?
If it weren't for the fact that he was someone Ning Yanshu brought back, Ning Wan would most likely have mistaken him for a homeless person on the street and left, covering her nose.
Ning Wan was speechless for a moment: "Xiao Shu, he's not..."
"He is."
“Okay, since you insist that this is your father…” Ning Wan paused, then asked, “Do you have any evidence to prove it?”
"Evidence?" Ning Yanshu frowned. "Mom, what is evidence?"
"It's evidence that can prove you are father and son. For example, photos, identification documents, or a DNA paternity test report."
Ning Yanshu lowered his head and remained silent for a long time before saying dejectedly, "Xiaoshu doesn't have these things..."
"So he's not your father." Ning Wan shrugged, then reminded him, "Xiao Shu, remember this: don't pick up strange men from the street and take them home. At best, you'll end up like Li Chengyin; at worst, you'll end up like Fu Shenxing, understand?"
Ning Yanshu didn't quite understand what her mother meant.
He didn't know Li Chengyin, let alone who Fu Shenxing was.
He had never even heard of those strange and tongue-twisting names.
But he's not stupid.
He could tell that his mother didn't like this "father".
Ning Yanshu was getting anxious.
He grabbed the man's hand and shook it hard, pacing back and forth: "Dad, quickly call Mom, quickly explain to her that you are Dad!"
Ning Wan looked at the man with a puzzled expression.
Waiting for his explanation.
The man pursed his lips, his gaze beneath his bangs fixed directly on Ning Wan.
He opened his mouth, then slowly uttered two words: "...Mom."
Ning Wan: "?!..."
It split open on the spot.
...
Ning Yanshu choked with emotion: "Dad, 'Mom' is what I call Mom. You should call Mom my wife, my dear, my sweetheart, or... or Wanwan."
The man was silent for a moment, then obediently called out, "Wanwan..."
Ning Wan choked.
She suspected that the man might be mentally unstable.
Otherwise, how could he so readily and shamelessly call a woman who looks younger than himself "Mom"?
It took Ning Wan a long time to slowly recover from the shock of those two words.
She turned to Ning Yanshu and asked, "Where did you find him?"
Ning Yanshu answered honestly, "Next to the trash can."
Ning Wan: "..."
"I think I need to calm down..."
Suddenly, Ning Yanshu ran home.
He quickly brought Tiga out again and placed him in Ning Wan's arms: "Mom, believe me. He really is Dad!"
Ning Yanshu's little face was flushed with excitement.
Her eyes still sparkled.
"Daddy really saved Little Book. Just like Mommy said, he appeared in the light! He's a hero of the light!"
Ning Yanshu gestured wildly, trying her best to recreate the scene from that time...
...
After leaving kindergarten, Ning Yanshu made up her mind to find her father.
He wanted to prove to Wang Zihao and the children in the Sunflower Class that he wasn't a liar, and that he really did have a father!
...
However, after the brief impulse, the brain is left feeling lost and helpless.
Ning Yanshu was too young to know where to find her father.
So he began to wander aimlessly through the streets for a long time.
Following the endless stream of people, Ning Yanshu arrived at the park. He sat on a bench, lost in thought, staring blankly at the sky.
Then someone came to the bench on the other side.
He was a well-dressed man in a suit.
The man held a briefcase in his left hand and was on the phone with his right: "I'm so tired of being looked down upon. Every job interview I go for tells me to go home and wait for a response..."
