Chapter 210 Living Towards Death

After Xu Xiufeng finished speaking, she blinked and lowered her head to wipe away her tears.

However, Ning Wan keenly sensed that something was amiss.

She asked, "Why does everyone think that Grandma is looking for her own child?"

Xu Xiufeng was also taken aback for a moment by the question Ning Wan raised.

Realizing what she meant, she immediately replied, "The old lady is so old. If she wasn't looking for her child, could it be that her husband is the one who's lost and can't be found?"

"Besides, some people asked the old lady where her husband was, and she said that he had his own life in this world and she shouldn't disturb him... Isn't that a remarriage?"

Speaking of this, Xu Xiufeng seemed particularly indignant: "If you ask me, men are more heartless than women. A lost child is a woman's life, a hurdle she can never overcome. But men can still easily start their own second spring... This world is really too unfair!"

Ning Wan's eyes were glazed over, and she murmured, "No, it's not like that..."

Her mind was in turmoil, as if some truth was about to be revealed.

But it was just one step away, yet it just wouldn't let it slip by...

...

When Grandma Chen's wooden coffin was pushed into the crematorium's incinerator for cremation, Ning Yanshu cried uncontrollably in the family waiting room.

He clutched Ning Wan's sleeve tightly, his eyes brimming with tears, and asked, "Why won't Grandma come out? Why did she have to die? Didn't Grandma promise Xiaoshu she wouldn't break her word? She promised Xiaoshu she would watch me grow up, so why did Grandma lie to me?"

With tears in her eyes, Ning Wan comforted him, saying, "Birth, aging, sickness, and death are things that no one can control. Grandma didn't mean to break her promise..."

"I don't want to, I don't want to!..." Ning Yanshu couldn't accept it: "You have to keep your promises. This is a principle that adults teach children. But why do you adults break your promises? Why?"

Ning Wan was speechless and could only hold him tightly in her arms.

Ning Yanshu sobbed, pleading weakly, "Does everyone have to die? Can't we all live to be a hundred years old forever?"

“Fool, how can a person not die?” Ning Wan was heartbroken, but she had to force Ning Yanshu to accept this reality: “Humans are just animals, creatures, so insignificant in this world. No one can be the master of this world. Everything has a beginning and an end, and so do humans.”

“But what’s truly terrifying isn’t death itself, but rather the world’s forgetting of you after you die.” Ning Wan looked at Ning Yanshu and asked, “Will Xiaoshu forget Grandma and stop remembering her after Grandma dies?”

Ning Yanshu wept uncontrollably.

He shook his head vigorously: "No, Xiao Shu will never forget Grandma!"

Ning Wan smiled with relief and wiped away his tears: "So as long as Xiao Shu doesn't forget his grandma, then grandma will live in Xiao Shu's heart in another way."

Ning Yanshu looked at Ning Wan with tears in his eyes, seemingly understanding but not quite.

He asked, his voice trembling with sobs, "Will Little Book die one day?"

“Everyone will die,” Ning Wan said. “Mom will, and so will Dad. It is precisely because life is short and finite that we should cherish every minute of it.”

Ning Wan's eyes were dry from crying.

She exhaled a breath of stale air and slowly said, "Face death squarely, confront death directly. Living towards death is not about fearing life and death, nor is it about resigning oneself to fate, but about living in the present, so that tomorrow will be without regrets and without wasting this life."

Ning Yanshu looked at Ning Wan through teary eyes, choking back tears as he tried to understand the meaning behind her words.

Driven by his out-of-control emotions, he could only bury his face in his mother's chest and sob uncontrollably...

...

An hour later, Shen Fu came out carrying the urn containing ashes.

The box was very light and had almost no weight.

It's only about the size of two palms when you hold it in your hand.

When a person is born, they weigh only a few pounds. They are held in the palm of someone's hand, filled with the hopes and love of their family, and are born into this world.

I never imagined that things would be like this even after death.

The only difference is that the loud cries of the deceased have been replaced by the mournful wails of their loved ones after death.

That small, square wooden box holds the weight of a person's short life.

Finally, it was held in the palm of its loved ones' hands, carrying their affection and remembrance, before returning to dust.

It is where we came from, and it is also where we are going.

Ning Wan looked at Shen Fu holding the urn and staring blankly, and couldn't help but feel a little worried.

From the time he discovered Grandma Chen's death this morning until now, Shen Fu's expression has not changed much.

Compared to Ning Yanshu's sadness and Xu Xiufeng's grief, he remained as quiet as if nothing had happened.

But he hung his head and didn't say a word, his empty eyes numb and sorrowful.

The black suit exuded a solemn and dejected air, and the atmosphere around him was so oppressive it was suffocating.

Ning Wan slowly walked over and said softly, "Let me take it."

She reached out her hand as if to take it.

Shen Fu did not refuse.

However, when she received the urn and felt its unusual weight, Ning Wan stared at Shen Fu in disbelief.

She didn't make a fuss; she simply held the urn quietly and left the funeral home...

...

After burying Grandma Chen's ashes in the cemetery and completing all the procedures, Ning Wan and Shen Fu returned home.

Ning Yanshu cried herself to sleep, resting her head on Shen Fu's shoulder.

Her eyes were swollen and red from crying, like walnuts, and she was still sobbing in her sleep.

Ning Wan took Ning Yanshu from Shen Fu's arms, carried him back to the room, and carefully placed him on the bed.

Ning Yanshu slept restlessly. His brows were furrowed, and tears were still sliding down his cheeks.
