Chapter 120
When Fan Xiaoxiao and the others returned to their lodging in town, it was already getting dark.
Two simple-looking carriages were parked in front of the house, each with two chestnut-colored horses in front of it.
Upon seeing strangers approach, they all snorted. Their hooves paced restlessly on the ground, emitting low neighs.
The entrance that Fan Xiaoxiao and the others wanted to enter was completely blocked by the two carriages. Just as they were wondering what to do, Xiao Bao's voice came from the other side of the carriages: "Is that Mother?"
"Xiao Bao!" Madam Fan responded, somewhat worried that the horse might trample her son.
"Don't come any closer, or the horse might trample you!"
"Mother!" Xiao Bao obviously didn't hear what Madam Fan said afterward, and ran out of the yard with his short legs.
Everyone watched with bated breath, but thankfully the horse seemed to understand human nature and did not trample the children.
"Mother! You're back! Auntie! You, you're injured?"
Before Xiao Bao could hug Fan Shi, he saw Fan Xiaoxiao next to him with bloodstains still on her forehead.
"Does it hurt? Xiao Bao will go get you some medicine!"
After saying that, Xiao Bao didn't wait for anyone's reaction and ran into the yard like a little whirlwind.
Fan Xiaoxiao sighed and carefully followed the others around the carriage in front of the door.
As soon as they entered, everyone in the courtyard looked towards the entrance. The Ghost Doctor removed the needles from Gu Zhongtai's head and walked towards Fan Xiaoxiao with a wronged expression.
"Oh! Little girl! You're finally back! This old man is starving! Hey, what's going on here?"
Upon hearing the Ghost Doctor's words, Gu Chongtai slightly turned his head towards the door.
Head? What's wrong with this girl now?
"Oh dear! Let me see this quickly, tsk, who hurt you like this?"
"Uh, something happened, but I accidentally fell and hurt myself. It's nothing serious, Xiao Bao has already gone to find some medicine for me."
Fan Xiaoxiao didn't intend to go into details. She walked to the side, put down her basket, and planned to go to the well to fetch some water to simply wash the wound on her forehead.
Seeing that she looked a little unwell, Aunt Wang quickly came over and said, "Girl, let me help you wash."
Fan Xiaoxiao nodded, and the two carefully cleaned the wounds by the well.
"Auntie! Medicine!" Xiao Bao ran over hurriedly, holding a small medicine bottle. But as he passed the Ghost Doctor, the Ghost Doctor snatched the medicine away.
"Hmm? You're going to use this? When will you get better? Use my medicine!" With that, the Ghost Doctor pulled out another medicine bottle from his pocket without further ado.
Bai Hua, standing to the side, raised an eyebrow in surprise. This was the first time he had ever seen an old man offer medicine so readily. He glanced at Xiao Hei and quietly asked him what was going on.
The latter winked at him and said, "You don't know yet, do you? That little kid is really favored by your master these days."
"What are you two whispering about!" The Ghost Doctor glared at them and handed the medicine bottle to Xiao Bao.
Then he called out to Fan Xiaoxiao, "Baby! You have to get better quickly! This old man is starving!"
"Yes! Auntie, you need to get better quickly! You can't have a scar! Auntie is beautiful, it would be such a pity if you had a scar!"
"Pfft!" Fan Xiaoxiao couldn't help but burst out laughing.
"Where did you learn all this nonsense?"
"Grandma, apply the medicine."
Xiao Bao didn't explain; he simply gave the medicine to Aunt Wang and then ran away.
Madam Fan walked over with a smile: "This child. By the way, sister, you're injured. We'll cook dinner tonight."
"Ouch!" The Ghost Doctor's powder stung her wound. Before she could speak, she heard Xiao Bao shout from the other end, "Yes, Auntie! You should rest! Mom and Grandma's cooking is delicious too!"
"Rest? No, I can't rest. But I do need to trouble my sister and aunt to cook today. I need to go and grind the konjac into powder. We have to set off tomorrow, so I need to get all the grains sorted out before we leave."
When she mentioned that they would be leaving tomorrow, Aunt Wang's hand visibly trembled, and the medicine powder in her hand suddenly splattered onto Fan Xiaoxiao's wound.
"hiss."
"Ouch, little girl, I hurt you!"
"I'm fine, Auntie, you and Sister go make dinner first." Fan Xiaoxiao knew that Aunt Wang was still thinking about what happened during the day, so she sighed slightly, patted her hand, stood up, and called Uncle Wang to help her remove the gate of the house.
The Ghost Doctor asked, somewhat puzzled, "Girl, why do you want to remove that thing?"
Fan Xiaoxiao smiled mysteriously: "Of course, it's for making konjac powder!"
"Konjac powder? What's that for?"
"Well, let's keep this a secret for now." Fan Xiaoxiao smiled and turned to direct Xiaobao to help.
"Xiao Bao, go and get the gauze we bought earlier for your aunt."
"good!"
After giving her instructions, she began washing the konjac jelly, then peeling and crushing it. But when it came to crushing it, Fan Xiaoxiao encountered a new problem.
She was too weak, and there was just too much konjac to mash; she couldn't finish in a short time. Gu Chongtai listened to her struggling and stood up silently.
"Xiao Hei, you guys go help. With this girl's strength, she won't be able to finish even if she works all night." After saying that, he turned and walked into the thatched hut.
Fan Xiaoxiao stared at his retreating figure, slightly stunned. Only when she realized that Xiao Hei had come to take over her work did she understand that Boss Ye had sent someone to help her.
With the help of two strong people, the work was naturally completed quickly.
Fan Xiaoxiao found two tree branches and tied them together to form a filter-like structure around the gauze. Then she started adding water to the konjac residue to filter it.
This process needs to be done twice to thoroughly wash out the powder from the konjac.
While waiting for the starch to settle, Aunt Wang and Madam Fan had already prepared their evening meal. They then invited everyone over to eat.
"Hmm? Isn't Young Master Ye coming out to eat?" Fan Xiaoxiao sat down and was about to pick up her chopsticks when she realized that Boss Ye didn't seem to have come out.
"Ignore that guy, he doesn't really want to eat." The old ghost doctor waved his hand dismissively, picked up a piece of stewed beef, and put it in his mouth.
"Hmm! This one isn't bad either!"
Fan Xiaoxiao glanced subconsciously in the direction of the thatched hut, and Xiao Hei noticed her gaze. He smiled helplessly and said, "Don't worry about it. That's just how Master is. She usually doesn't have much of an appetite."
"Oh..." Fan Xiaoxiao nodded, picked up a piece of beef, but to be honest, the beef wasn't particularly delicious. It was basically just seasoned with some salt and soy sauce, and the stewing time was a little too short, so it wasn't tender enough. If some chili and pepper were added, it would probably be much better.
After eating a few mouthfuls of rice haphazardly, Fan Xiaoxiao found some crushed peppercorns and Sichuan peppercorns and put them into the still-cooking pot. After stirring it slightly, she ladled out a new bowl of beef and headed towards the thatched hut.
Gu Zhongtai, who was leaning against a haystack to rest, heard Fan Xiaoxiao approaching from afar. The footsteps grew closer and closer, and then a spicy aroma wafted into his nose.
"Here, have some of this. How will we travel tomorrow if we don't eat?"
