Chapter 138
At night, the Ghost Doctor led Fan Xiaoxiao into the carriage shop. His skillful manipulations captivated everyone in the shop.
Then, the two of them furtively attached the prepared carriage to the two horses, and under the cover of night, they moved all the belongings onto the carriage.
Finally, the Ghost Doctor fed the two horses some more medicinal powder. Then, he opened the gates of the carriage shop. After doing all this, he led Fan Xiaoxiao out of the shop and headed straight for the city wall. They chose an inconspicuous corner and waited in the darkness for their opportunity.
Because of the activity during the day, this place is now under heavy guard. Many soldiers patrol back and forth, and the surrounding area is brightly lit by fire.
"It seems the princess really wants me dead."
Hiding in the bushes, Fan Xiaoxiao observed the extent of the security measures in the area, her voice betraying a hint of melancholy.
"I guess your sudden disappearance completely enraged her. After all, these people who keep saying 'I am the Empress' all day long are a bunch of lunatics. Alright, that's enough."
The Ghost Doctor took out a whistle from his pocket. He had just given the horse a frenzied powder, and calculating the time, it should take effect soon. As soon as he blew the whistle, the horse would charge towards them like a madman.
But just as the Ghost Doctor was about to blow his bamboo whistle, a flickering light appeared on the city wall, suggesting a faint commotion. A person clad in armor led a petite figure up the wall. Just as the Ghost Doctor was about to make his move, the figure tilted her head slightly towards Fan Xiaoxiao and the others, revealing a pair of phoenix eyes beneath her cloak.
It's the princess! Fan Xiaoxiao was startled and quickly stopped the ghost doctor's actions.
"Which city tower is the princess waiting for us on? There are probably more than just these people this time!"
The Ghost Doctor tensed up, then clicked his tongue in annoyance: "This girl is nothing like a royal descendant; she's really going against us."
Fan Xiaoxiao stared at the figure on the city wall for a while, then seemed to remember something, patted the Ghost Doctor and whispered something in his ear.
"We'll do it like this..."
A moment later, the Ghost Doctor rubbed his hands together, his eyes shining: "Good! Good! Good! Kid, you're really ruthless! Oh! You wait here! I'll go take care of this!"
After saying that, the Ghost Doctor vanished in a flash, leaving Fan Xiaoxiao squatting in the bushes, completely bewildered.
"..." This old man?!? He just left like that?! He just left her here like that?! What if she gets arrested?!
"Ptooey, ptooey, ptooey!" Fan Xiaoxiao shook her head. She tried to shrink herself into an even smaller ball, constantly reassuring herself that everything was alright, but then the treetops above her head began to rustle.
She froze, then slowly looked up at the tree. Two large, bulbous eyes stared straight at her.
Cat... owl?
...
Half an hour later, several red flames shot into the sky and exploded.
Renle, atop the city wall, stared at the color of the firelight and cursed through gritted teeth, "That direction leads to my residence! How dare this lowly commoner!"
As soon as she finished speaking, bursts of fire erupted from the south gate.
Ren Le narrowed her eyes, drew a sword from a nearby soldier, and held it to the soldier's neck: "Didn't you say they were going to leave through this gate? You actually lied to me!"
A cold glint flashed, and just as the sword was about to fall on the soldier's neck, a scabbard that had not yet been drawn just happened to block the sharp sword.
The soldier was so frightened by this turn of events that he fell to the ground. If Fan Xiaoxiao were here, she would definitely recognize this soldier as the one who had questioned them about where they came from and where they were going when they entered the city.
"Princess, you must not kill soldiers indiscriminately!"
At this moment, the soldier was so frightened by the enraged princess that his legs were trembling, and he begged for mercy with tears and snot streaming down his face: "Your Highness, they, they must have been afraid that we were on guard, so they went through another gate!"
The princess tilted her head slightly and stared at the soldier for a long time. After a moment, she raised the sword and swung it next to his head. The soldier felt a chill on his ear, and then something fell to the ground.
He looked at it shakily, and it was an ear... his ear.
Blood flowed freely down half his face, and the pain belatedly struck, but the soldier could only stare palely, not daring to utter a sound.
General Yu frowned, about to speak, when the blood-stained sword was thrown in front of the soldier. The princess glanced at him sideways, her domineering gaze sending shivers down the soldier's spine.
"You useless thing, I'll cut it down for you! For General Yu's sake, I'll spare your life!"
After saying this, the princess led her entourage down from the city wall.
Fan Xiaoxiao hid in the darkness, trying her best to keep her breathing as low as possible.
Renle was helped onto his horse by the guards, and the horse pawed at the ground restlessly. The princess, seated on horseback, glanced at the tall figure below. She frowned, then, as if struck by a sudden thought, a wicked smile spread across her face.
Then Fan Xiaoxiao saw her dismount and walk up to General Yu, saying, "I think it's better for you to go to the south gate, General, and I'll stay here..."
"Your Highness! Your Highness!"
The sound of horses' hooves came from the darkness, drawing everyone's attention.
A guard dressed in red rode up to the princess, dismounted, and knelt awkwardly before her.
Renle frowned when he saw that Renle was dressed in a disheveled manner. The servant behind him immediately stepped forward and scolded, "What kind of behavior is this, all flustered and disorderly!"
The man, barely catching his breath, slammed his head on the ground and cried out in a deep voice, "Your Highness! The City Lord's Mansion! It's on fire!!"
Fan Xiaoxiao was far away and couldn't hear what the people were saying very clearly. Because of their awkward positions, she could only see their shadows.
Maintaining one position for so long had made her legs numb. Just as she was about to move, she felt a weight on her shoulder. Fan Xiaoxiao shuddered and heard a familiar voice behind her.
"It's me."
The Ghost Doctor returned, placing a hand on Fan Xiaoxiao's shoulder as they watched Ren Le and his group hurriedly mount their horses and leave.
Fan Xiaoxiao looked at the Ghost Doctor with some curiosity: "What did you do?"
The latter chuckled: "Heh, I burned her mansion down! And I even got them two crazy horses! They're gone! Heh!"
The Ghost Doctor rubbed his hands together, and after watching the group walk away, he took out a bamboo whistle and put it to his lips.
"Chirp chirp chirp!"
After the whistle blew, the two horses pulling the carriage charged towards the city gate as if they had gone mad.
"Grandpa! The horses are here!"
Fan Xiaoxiao quickly got up from the ground. The Ghost Doctor nodded and, with her in hand, leaped into the carriage.
The city gate was in complete chaos, but the horse had been given a maddening drug by the Ghost Doctor and was moving at an astonishing speed.
"Close the door! Close the door!!!"
It was too late; the carriage had already left the city gate.
Fan Xiaoxiao's heart was pounding. Just as she passed the city gate, she saw General Yu.
He had sharp eyebrows and bright eyes, and a rugged look; I felt like I'd seen him somewhere before.
