Chapter 25 Chen Ergou

Chapter 25 Chen Ergou

As night fell, Chen Ergou stealthily disembarked from the dock. The weather was unbearably hot and humid; it was likely about to rain. The flickering candlelight in the distance reminded him of what he had seen at the mass grave earlier that day, and goosebumps instantly rose on his back. He clutched what he was carrying tightly and ran home.

The lights next door were already off, and Chen Ergou carefully opened the courtyard gate. Only when he was home did he breathe a sigh of relief. Touching the bundle in his arms, he grinned and muttered to himself, "Damn, I'm exhausted! At least this trip wasn't a waste!"

Having said that, he hurriedly carried the items back to his room, lit a candle, and spread them out on the table. By the dim light, the items on the table were revealed—a gold dragon and phoenix bracelet, a pair of jade earrings, and loose silver pieces worth about seven or eight taels.

"Hehehe! We're really going to make a fortune!"

A greedy look appeared on Chen Ergou's face as he kept wiping the jewels with his dirty sleeve.

Suddenly, a clap of thunder flashed outside. Startled, Chen Ergou's hand trembled violently, and the thing fell to the ground. He was terribly distressed and rushed to pick it up, exclaiming, "Oh my god! Don't break this!"

After confirming that the items were not broken, Chen Ergou breathed a sigh of relief, put them in his pocket, blew out the candle, and lay down on the bed fully clothed without even washing up.

In the middle of the night, a fierce wind howled outside, and before an incense stick could burn, the rain began to pound down. Chen Ergou, awakened by the sound of the rain, frowned and slept restlessly. A short while later, drops of liquid landed on his face.

Chen Ergou jolted awake by the chill. Touching his damp face, he muttered irritably, "Damn it! It's leaking again... Ahh ...

Upon realizing that what was on his hand wasn't a clear liquid, but a foul-smelling red substance, Chen Ergou screamed and sat up abruptly. He kicked his legs several times and frantically wiped his hands on the blanket.

Another drop of blood fell, this time from Chen Ergou's neck. Startled by the cold, damp touch, Chen Ergou jumped off the bed and scrambled to the table, where he picked up a flint and lit a candle with trembling hands.

By the dim light of the fire, Chen Ergou finally saw clearly that his house wasn't leaking water; it was blood leaking out! The bed, the floor, the walls! Everywhere was stained with mottled crimson. The stench, combined with everything before him, relentlessly assaulted Chen Ergou's senses!

He felt like he was going crazy. His brain told him he had to run, but his legs were so weak and trembling that he couldn't take a single step. The slightest movement caused him to collapse to the ground. Just then, a cracking sound came from the roof, like someone had moved a tile. Chen Ergou shuddered, his neck stiffening, his face pale as he looked towards the roof.

It wouldn't have mattered if he hadn't looked, but the moment he did, Chen Ergou's soul seemed to leave his body. On the rooftop, a pale, ghostly face, its features contorted with rage, stared at him. When he looked over, the face twisted in agony. Chen Ergou felt the last thread of reason snap in his mind. A heart-wrenching scream escaped his lips, his pants became soaked, and his eyes rolled back as he lost consciousness.
