Chapter 7 Me? My surname is Gu.
When Fan Xiaoxiao climbed to a high point and met up with Uncle Wang, this was the scene that greeted her. The bandits and the villagers were locked in a fierce battle, with many wounded and dead. Although she had mentally prepared herself, seeing the actual scene still sent chills down her spine.
She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and tried to calm her heart, which was pounding with panic and fear. There was nothing to be afraid of, nothing to be terrified of. If she didn't do this, it would be these few people who would die. This was the reality of this cannibalistic era.
Fan Xiaoxiao kept repeating these words to herself, but her hands were still trembling. She knew she was just deceiving herself. Uncle Wang saw all of this and sighed, "Girl, there's nothing to feel guilty about. If we didn't do this today, we would all be dead. Besides, those people were no good to begin with."
Madam Fan covered the eyes of the baby in her arms and asked, somewhat puzzled, "What exactly is going on?"
"Yes, old man! What are you hiding from us?!"
Uncle Wang sighed, gazing at the chaotic scene below, and said in a slightly hoarse voice, "Behind that village, outside the woods, there's a large dam. It's still under construction, and most of the people working on it are children around ten years old, along with some elderly people. They're all emaciated, and some even collapse while working. I saw several lost children from the neighboring village inside. There was even one from our village, that simple-minded boy named Gou Dan. Tell me, what kind of good people are these?"
Aunt Wang frowned as she listened and spat out a curse.
"You damned bastard! How is this any different from those bandits?!"
Fan Xiaoxiao's gaze swept past the battlefield in front of the stronghold, then fell upon the forest behind it: "This morning, Uncle Wang and I set up several traps in the woods, intending to lure these bandits there, weaken them, and then find a way to notify the stronghold that bandits were attacking. This way, we could repel the bandits while minimizing damage to the stronghold. But..."
Madam Fan patted Fan Xiaoxiao on the back: "Alright, Er Ya. This is fine too. Since neither side is a good person, let them fight each other."
Fan Xiaoxiao pursed her lips and nodded silently.
What's the next step?
Aunt Wang asked, and the group fell silent again. Madam Fan sighed, her face full of worry: "We can't go home. That village is a heartless place. Where should we go?"
“We need to go to a town, a bigger town. And we can’t let anyone know that we came from Wuxi Village.”
Fan Xiaoxiao spoke quickly, and Madam Fan was somewhat puzzled: "Why can't we let people know that we came from Wuxi Village?"
"These bandits are looking for the children and women in Wuxi Village. None of us know if the bandits below are the last batch, so we should be careful."
After hearing Fan Xiaoxiao's words, the group suddenly understood and nodded repeatedly to indicate that they had remembered. Just then, a soft laugh rang out from a tree not far behind Fan Xiaoxiao.
"Oh, so you're from Wuxi Village."
This casual remark exploded like a thunderclap in Fan Xiaoxiao and the others' ears. Fan Xiaoxiao's heart pounded, and almost instantly her whole body tensed up. She turned her head sharply and stared intently at the source of the voice: "Who!"
A figure tumbled down from the tree. The person looked to be seventeen or eighteen years old, with the appearance of a martial arts practitioner. He was dressed in a red outfit with cloud patterns, and had a handsome face with slightly curled sideburns. What was most surprising was that the person's eyes had a hint of dark green, like black jade.
Cold sweat trickled down Fan Xiaoxiao's forehead and across the corner of her eye. Her hand silently reached for the wood-chopping knife behind her, her eyes fixed on the man as she asked again, "Who are you?"
The handsome young man raised an eyebrow and smiled slightly: "Me? My surname is Gu, Gu Chongtai."
"Click!"
