Song Jiaren's face froze. She was already upset elsewhere and thought she would complain to him when he came back. She didn't expect him to doubt her like this. She suddenly felt greatly wronged.
Her eyes instantly turned red. "So what do you want? If you want, then let me go. I don't care whether you're the Crown Princess or the Prince's Consort. It doesn't matter if you have three wives and four concubines or you're partying every night. I'll go to Wusun and live a comfortable life with three husbands and four concubines. You..."
Before she could finish, Gu Zhen's teasing gaze turned sharp, gradually growing angry. Even though he was angry about what she said, he couldn't do anything about it. He could only glare at her, glance at her sideways and say, "You are making a false accusation."
A few hours later, soft pleading and tiny sobbing sounds were heard from the couch surrounded by the low-hanging stone-blue gauze curtains. Song Jiaren begged for mercy with hazy eyes, her long hair tangled in a mess. The man who used to be kind to her, now had no idea what had gone wrong.
Song Jiaren covered her eyes and whimpered. She was held firmly in place, shaking like a sieve.
Unable to bear it any longer, she placed her hand on his sweaty head, tempting him to lower his head and press his lips to hers, until he let out a long breath and whispered ambiguously on her cheek, "Three husbands and four servants?"
Song Jiaren quickly begged for mercy and put her arms around his waist. "No, I just said it casually."
Gu Zhen whispered in her ear with a low and hoarse voice, "Just be jealous, but don't say unpleasant things to make me angry. I like you so much, how could I want someone else." After saying that, he kissed her on the face again.
Song Jiaren's heart was filled with sweetness. In fact, she just had some bad fantasies for a moment, so she got angry at him for no reason. Now that he expressed his feelings, she felt a little embarrassed and could only close her eyes and pretend to be asleep.
After he held her, cleaned her, and put her into bed, she continued to pretend to be asleep until he whispered in her ear, "Do you want to know the consequences of pretending to be asleep?"
Song Jiaren opened her eyes immediately, without a trace of sleepiness on her face. She stiffened her neck and argued, "I was just tired and rested for a while. I'm not tired anymore."
Gu Zhen looked at her with a smile and said, "It's good that you're not tired anymore." Then he lifted the quilt, and the red gauze tent warmed her for another night of romance.
A few days later, the prefect was reprimanded by Gu Zhen in front of everyone for his negligence in his work. The prefect knew why in his heart, but he could only swallow the bitter fruit silently. After returning home, he asked someone to prepare a small gift and went to apologize in person.
Song Jiaren was not in a position to come out, so she hid behind the screen and eavesdropped. She saw that he was alone and that the prefect was smart enough not to bring his wife with him.
"My wife came to your house a few days ago and made many offenses in a hurry. She really didn't mean to do that. I hope you can forgive me. These are just some small gifts from me. I hope you and your wife will not mind."
Song Jiaren frowned, and her impression of this prefect dropped drastically. He did something wrong but didn't apologize sincerely. He first made a big deal out of a small matter, and then threw in a sugar-coated bullet in an attempt to get away with it. This routine is really a common practice throughout history.
Gu Zhen slowly picked up the green teacup and took a sip before slowly saying, "Is there such a thing?"
The prefect wiped the sweat from his forehead and said, "...This...is all due to my wife's rudeness."
"I haven't heard of this matter, so I guess she doesn't take it to heart." Although he said so, Gu Zhen didn't even look at him, and his attitude remained indifferent, which made the prefect sitting below look embarrassed. The prince refused to listen, and he had no choice but to say a few more words and then made an excuse that he had something to do and left in disgrace.
Song Jiaren walked out from behind the screen, sat next to Gu Zhen, and asked with interest, "You don't give him any face, aren't you afraid that he will have a problem with you?"
Gu Zhen pondered and said, "Now that you put it that way..."
"How?" Song Jiaren asked curiously.
Gu Zhen continued, "Even if you have any opinions, you have to endure them."
Song Jiaren: “…” is so annoying.
In order to avoid the quiet, Gu Zhen simply took Song Jiaren to a house with hot springs in the suburbs to stay for a few days.
Since moving into the house, Song Jiaren either rode in a sedan chair to enjoy the scenery, or wore a veil hat and picked fruits and vegetables with the farmers. During the day, she would take time to take care of the house's affairs and ask a few questions. In the evening, she would soak in the hot spring water and eat some fruit.
After dinner, Song Jiaren couldn't wait to take off her coat and climbed over the edge of the pool to sink in. The warm water covered her neck. She sighed comfortably, stirring the water and making a splashing sound.
Suddenly the water surface became turbulent, and a shirtless figure in pajama pants entered the water.
The man had jet-black hair and narrow eyes that seemed to be soaked in moonlight. There were traces of nail marks on his wheat-colored skin.
Song Jiaren held her breath and asked blankly, "Didn't you just say you couldn't come?"
When she came, she confirmed again and again that he couldn't come, so she went into the water wearing only a small dress. He came out just after she got in and said that he didn't deliberately lie to her, but she didn't believe him.
"Just now was just now, and now is now."
What he said made so much sense that she was speechless. She could only watch him walk towards her, causing ripples.
Song Jiaren stammered, "You...you...don't come over..."
Gu Zhen looked her over slowly, then took a step forward, trapping her between the pool wall and his chest. His dark, playful eyes pretended to be serious. "What are you so nervous about?"
Song Jiaren's face was rosy from the steam from the hot spring, like a ripe tomato.
"Then get up." He pushed twice but it was of no use. Under his palms was a wet and strong chest, which met his dark pupils, and her appearance was clearly reflected in them.
Gu Zhen stared at her, and with one free hand he stroked her soft long hair and wiped the water droplets off her face. "Do you like it here?"
Song Jiaren felt her head getting hot, perhaps because she had been soaking in the hot spring for a long time. She replied in a daze, "...I like it."
Gu Zhen put his arm around her waist and said, "Since you like it, then stay here for a few more days." Then he picked her up and said, "Even if you like it, you can't stay here for too long, or you'll feel dizzy."
Before Song Jiaren could react, he put on his coat, wrapped himself tightly in the quilt, and carried him back to the couch. He spent the next two days on the couch and in the hot spring.
After finally making it back, Song Jiaren slept soundly in the carriage on the way back, and only woke up when the carriage stopped.
The accusatory one said, "You are too unrestrained."
Gu Zhen recalled what he said when he was inspecting the village, "Soaking in hot springs is indeed good for your health. Now you can..." and held back his request.
Song Jiaren covered his mouth in anger and said, "Stop talking!"
She would never dare to say she liked taking a hot spring bath again.
When I got back, it was time for dinner. The maid brought the dishes and left.
Song Jiaren saw her favorite sweet and sour fish, picked up a piece with chopsticks, but before she even put it in her mouth, she started to feel nauseous. She covered her mouth, bent over, and retched twice.
Gu Zhen quickly put down his chopsticks and patted her on the back. "What's wrong? Did you eat a fish bone?"
There were still tears in Song Jiaren's eyes from the dry heaves just now. She shook her head without saying anything. Suddenly, her stomach felt like it was in a knot and she felt so uncomfortable that she didn't want to eat anything.
She took the tea he handed to her and took two sips. She finally suppressed the feeling of nausea and wondered what was wrong with her.
"I'm fine, I just felt a little nauseous just now."
I used to love eating this sweet and sour fish, but just now I felt nauseous when I smelled the fish, and my stomach still feels uncomfortable when I think about it.
After staying in the carriage for a whole day, she was hungry and had to give up the sweet and sour fish and eat something else. After she had finally eaten something, before she had time to digest it, she saw a plate of incense burning on the table beside the couch, and a faint and light fragrance wafted over.
She used to like the smell of this fragrance, but tonight, as soon as she smelled it, her stomach started churning. She immediately got up and ran out, vomiting into the soil in the garden outside.
Gu Zhen also hurriedly chased after her and saw Song Jiaren squatting beside the flower bed and vomiting out everything she had eaten that night. In the end, when she had nothing left to vomit, she vomited yellow bile in pain.
He took out a handkerchief and wiped her mouth. "When you feel better, go back and lie down. Drink some hot water and let the doctor take a look."
After a while, Song Jiaren leaned weakly in Gu Zhen's arms. She was so uncomfortable that she couldn't speak, so she nodded.
Gu Zhen looked at her weak appearance with a complicated expression, a mixture of heartache and faint joy.
"When was your last period?"
Song Jiaren said weakly, "Why are you asking this?"
Then, thinking of that possibility, he looked surprised and said, "You mean I'm pregnant? I can't remember when it was last time. I always can't remember. Maybe I just had an upset stomach."
She might have become a little nervous because of this.
"Let the doctor take her pulse and you'll know. Let's go back first." Gu Zhen picked her up, feeling excited.
Although he wasn't entirely sure, based on the gossip he'd heard in the past, this reaction was quite consistent.
Soon the doctor arrived, took Song Jiaren's pulse for a while, and congratulated Gu Zhen with a happy face, "Congratulations, Madam is indeed pregnant. According to my diagnosis, it has been more than a month. Madam has a weak constitution and must have had a serious illness before, so she reacted so strongly and needs to be taken care of."
Gu Zhen was overjoyed. He sat down beside the couch and looked at her belly tenderly. Then he asked someone to give the doctor a generous reward.
Before Song Jiaren could digest the news, she was attracted by Gu Zhen's bright eyes, which were filled with excitement, joy and anticipation.
"Is it really true?"
Song Jiaren also lowered her head and looked at her flat belly. She was not very surprised. She had never had the courage to ask Gu Zhen to give him some preventive medicine. She had forgotten about this matter and let him act like a fool all day long. It was normal to have a baby, but it was a little difficult to accept it for a while. She was afraid that she would not be able to raise this child well. There was no milk powder and diapers here, no vaccinations and early education centers.
Gu Zhen took off his coat and climbed onto the couch quietly. He held her in his arms and softly shared his joy. "It's been over a month. If I had known, I wouldn't have been so reckless some time ago."
"You still have the nerve to say that. Fortunately, the child is fine." Song Jiaren scolded him for being like a bitch during that period of time. His eyes would glow green when he saw her.
Gu Zhen coughed lightly with a guilty conscience. "Don't worry, now that I know, I won't do anything rash. Don't be afraid. Having a child is a natural thing."
Song Jiaren didn't show it on her face, but she didn't care at all in her heart. The seeds of uneasiness had been taking root in her heart.
