Seeing this, Aunt Gu covered her mouth and chuckled. She loved seeing Old Lady Gu get her comeuppance.
In a village where people meet every day, it's inevitable that there will be some unsavory things.
The conflict between Aunt Gu and Old Lady Gu stemmed from a dispute last year.
The two families' land was next to each other, and they usually kept to themselves. But then Old Lady Gu went crazy and started planting vegetables on the ridge between their fields.
This immediately angered Aunt Gu. "Aren't you taking advantage of me?"
Without saying a word, she pulled up all the seedlings.
The two of them were arguing with their hands on their hips. If their children hadn't been holding them back, they definitely would have pulled each other's hair and started fighting.
Although more than a year has passed, neither of them has any intention of reconciling, and they inevitably exchange barbs whenever one of them has the upper hand.
Aunt Gu Liu wasn't genuinely pitying Gu An'an; she was just trying to annoy Gu's mother. "What? Four children mean four pairs of diapers, right? Speaking of which, An'an, you don't know how to take care of yourself. You're still a child yourself."
Upon hearing this, Old Lady Gu glared at Aunt Gu Liu with a sharp look, saying each word clearly, "An'an is the child I carried for ten months and gave birth to. Do you think I don't know how to cherish my daughter?"
She packed up her belongings and took Gu An'an home.
Aunt Gu shouted at the top of her lungs, "An'an, your mother loves you so much and married you off to such a good family. You must be filial to your mother."
The other women covered their mouths and laughed when they heard this.
This Gu family member is truly ruthless; they always bring up the very thing that shouldn't be brought up.
"Why do you think Gu An'an came back?"
"Who knows? She even brought things back with her. How could this girl be so silly?"
Gu An'an wasn't stupid. She saw her mother's ashen face, pretended not to see anything, and started talking about how big her children's feet were and what size shoes they wore.
Old Mrs. Gu was getting annoyed. "We don't have that many scraps of cloth at home. We might not be able to gather enough to make you shoes until after the New Year."
"It's alright, Mother." Gu An'an picked up the cloth bag in her hand. "I just happened to get some scraps of cloth, which is perfect for making shoe soles."
Old Lady Gu: "..." You actually brought scraps of cloth back to your parents' home?
Gu An'an, however, looked like she wanted praise. "If you really can't find the time, Mother, I'll trouble Aunt Liu. She's always been very kind to me."
Should we ask Lao Liu's wife to make shoes?
Then won't she be constantly criticized and gossiped about by that shrew?
Old Mrs. Gu was furious. "No need, it can be prepared before the Kitchen God Festival."
"Mom is so skillful, that was really too much trouble," Gu An'an praised.
She can make clothes, and they can make them quite nice, but making shoes is too hard work. If the stitches are rough, the shoes will be uncomfortable to wear.
Everyone has their own expertise, so of course we should entrust this glorious and arduous task to Old Lady Gu.
Sister-in-law Gu was sweeping the yard when she suddenly heard a familiar voice outside the door. Her heart skipped a beat, and for some reason, she remembered the slap she had received before.
toothache.
My toothache is terrible.
When she saw the person behind her mother-in-law, Sister-in-law Gu felt a sharp pain in her back teeth.
She felt a sour taste in her mouth and her face was burning. How dare this brat show her her face!
Before Sister-in-law Gu could speak, Gu An'an stepped forward and said, "Sister-in-law, I hit you last time when I was angry, but we are both parents. Anyone would lose their temper if they heard that someone was going to sell their daughter, right? If you're still angry, just slap me twice, and I won't fight back!"
Sister-in-law Gu never expected that she would bring this up in front of her mother-in-law, especially since she had tried to cover up the slap mark on her face when she got home that day...
Upon seeing her mother-in-law's unfriendly gaze, Sister-in-law Gu quickly spoke up, "Then..."
"So that's why my sister-in-law had two slap marks on her face the other day. It turns out it was you, An'an, who slapped her."
Gu Ersao, speaking in a sarcastic tone, slowly emerged from the east room. "An'an, what you did was wrong. An elder sister-in-law is like a mother. How could you lay a hand on your sister-in-law?"
As soon as Gu An'an entered the door, she saw Gu Ersao standing at the door, so she decided to take the initiative.
As expected, the two sisters-in-law in the Gu family didn't get along at all.
Gu An'an was very satisfied with this, but her face was full of fear. "Second sister-in-law, you are right. The eldest sister-in-law is like a mother. Even if you wanted to sell my Zhu'er to raise money for Xiao Biao's tuition at the private school, I wouldn't say a word!"
Just as I thought!
Gu Ersao was a shrewd woman, and upon hearing this, she immediately sneered, "Eldest sister-in-law, you are truly good at scheming."
"I didn't! Don't listen to this little hussy's nonsense!"
The two sisters-in-law immediately started arguing. They didn't get along to begin with, and now that Gu An'an had exposed Gu's eldest sister-in-law's little scheme, how could Gu's second sister-in-law let this opportunity pass?
When the two of them argue, their voices rise higher and higher, almost loud enough to sing a folk song.
Gu An'an found a safe spot to watch the commotion, choosing to stay out of it. But Old Madam Gu couldn't stand it any longer. She immediately grabbed a large broom and slammed it on the stone table in the yard. "Enough!"
There is an order of seniority and hierarchy.
Old Lady Gu's shout silenced the two sisters-in-law of the Gu family. Like roosters with their beaks tied, they stared at each other with wide eyes, wishing they could shoot flying knives from their eyes and stab each other to death.
Old Mrs. Gu was too lazy to pay attention to her two daughters-in-law. She looked at her daughter, who was far away from the battlefield, and said, "You came back this time just to have me make shoes for you?"
This one does have a temper; she seems to have guessed what I was thinking. But Gu An'an wasn't afraid. "That's not it. I originally planned to come and see my second brother and sister-in-law. If I hadn't happened to see Mother making shoes, I wouldn't have troubled you."
When Gu Ersao heard this, she raised an eyebrow. What did her sister-in-law want?
