Chapter 6 Stepmother Saves People

Gu An'an had no idea that the brother and sister hated her to the core. Even if she knew, there was nothing she could do.

Rome wasn't built in a day; it will take a lot of effort every day to resolve the resentment in those kids' hearts.

She stared at the entrenching tool that had appeared out of nowhere and muttered to herself, "I don't believe you for a second!"

The cross did not appear.

Okay, I'll figure out the purpose of this entrenching tool later.

But... even a skilled cook can't cook without rice.

The rice and flour bins were spotless, so clean that even mice wouldn't bother with them.

In the small kitchen, only a few crooked little sweet potatoes remained.

This family is so poor!

Gu An'an's heart was in turmoil.

Starting with a bunch of small sweet potatoes, who do they think they are, treating her like Zhu Yuanzhang?

Gu An'an took a few deep breaths, thinking of the few tender little cabbages at home. If she were gone, it would be strange if the Jiang and Gu families didn't take them away and sell them for money.

Even if it's just to protect the little cabbage, she has to try her best.

After picking the sweet potatoes into a basket, Gu An'an carried the basket away from the kitchen to get busy.

Roasted sweet potatoes, you know.

The princesses can roast beggar's chicken, and Gu An'an can roast sweet potatoes.

The entrenching tool dug a hole, and the excavated soil couldn't be wasted. It was used to wrap the sweet potato tightly with water and mud before being thrown into the burning charcoal.

Jiangjiazhuang is nestled against the mountains, so it has no shortage of firewood.

Gu An'an didn't feel bad at all when she started burning firewood.

She was humming a little tune as she busied herself, which made the children in the room look at each other in bewilderment.

Especially after smelling those fragrant aromas.

It smells so good, it smells so sweet. The stomachs of the children who hadn't had breakfast were rumbling.

Jiang Mingzhu looked somewhat embarrassed, but remained wary. "What kind of wicked scheme is she plotting now?"

The eldest brother, Jiang Mingyi, slowly shook his head. "No matter what we do, we must remain calm and adapt to any situation."

As soon as he finished speaking, the youngest Bao'er said with a pitiful look, "Brother, Bao'er is hungry."

It smells so good and tastes so sweet, Bao'er really wants to eat something.

The little girl's voice made the two older men exchange bewildered glances; they had nothing to eat either.

They can endure hunger, but children simply cannot withstand it.

"Baby, be good, big brother..."

The roar of a tiger interrupted Jiang Mingyi's words. Jiang's eldest brother instinctively shielded his third brother and fourth sister behind him, saying, "Don't be afraid, your eldest brother is here."

In the courtyard, Gu An'an was also startled.

"Do you want some?" Only then did she realize that the old man was still there.

Gu An'an quickly shook her head, "You're a carnivore, go catch your own food, don't try to take food from me."

Her start was bad enough, so let's not compete with her for this food.

Gu An'an's cold indifference made the little tiger turn away in frustration. As it left, its tail brushed against the gate, causing the gate to tremble slightly.

Seeing this, Gu An'an couldn't help but mutter, "She has quite a temper."

The sweet potatoes in the fire emitted a fragrant aroma, which made Gu An'an's stomach rumble.

After the firewood had burned out and only a faint warmth remained, Gu An'an picked up an entrenching tool and pulled a few sweet potatoes out of the fire.

The outer layer of yellow clay cracked open, and a fragrant aroma wafted out from inside.

The entrenching tool was carefully tapped into the yellow mud, and the mud clumps were quickly peeled off.

The fragrance became increasingly pronounced.

The chill permeated the air, reaching straight into the main room.

Not only Bao'er, but even Jiang Mingyi's stomach was rumbling this time.

However, that woman would absolutely not give them such a delicious-smelling and tasty treat.

Seeing that both Xiao San and Bao'er were starving and their eyes were shining, Jiang Mingyi felt that this couldn't go on.

"You watch over those two, I'm going out to find something to eat."

As soon as he finished speaking, Jiang Mingyi heard the woman's voice, "Perfect timing, I was also planning to go out and find something to eat. Let's have a sweet potato to fill our stomachs first, and then we'll go out together to see if we can find a lone rabbit."

"Those who live near mountains live off the mountains, and those who live near water live off the water. Otherwise, what can you do if there's no rice in the jar and no money in your pocket?"

Jiang Mingyi didn't react for a moment until he saw Gu An'an come in carrying a basket.

Inside the basket were several steaming, fragrant sweet potatoes, their delicate sweet aroma like worms crawling into one's nostrils.

Jiang Mingyi remained silent, and Jiang Mingzhu, standing beside him, also kept her head down and didn't speak.

"So you have guts, you won't eat my cooking?"

Jiang's youngest daughter's stomach rumbled, "I'm not hungry!"

Gu An'an: "..." You little brat, if it weren't for your stomach growling, I would have actually believed your nonsense.

I'm not hungry, you idiot.

She didn't bother arguing with this brat. She picked up a sweet potato, peeled off the skin to reveal the honey-colored flesh, and said, "Baby, are you hungry? Do you want some sweet potato? Roasted sweet potatoes are delicious."

Look at the little girl's bright, sparkling eyes; she would be absolutely adorable if she could grow up with chubby cheeks.

It smells so good!

Bao'er's grape-like eyes were fixed on the sweet potato in Gu An'an's hand, and she didn't even hear her older siblings coughing.

Gu An'an carefully broke off a small piece of sweet potato and brought it to the little girl's mouth, but unexpectedly, the little girl licked her fingers twice as well.

Watching Bao'er smack her lips, Jiang's third daughter, who was slightly older than her, couldn't help but lick her lips—was it really that delicious?

His stomach growled again, and the little boy immediately clutched his stomach and turned to look outside.

Gu An'an found it a bit funny. "Zhu'er, you take good care of your younger brother and sister. Eldest brother, come with me to find something to eat."

This arrangement startled Jiang Mingzhu, who subconsciously looked up at Gu An'an.
