Lunch was quite simple.
Gu An'an made pancakes, and although she originally said she wasn't planning to cook, she ended up stir-frying some shredded potatoes.
There weren't any other dishes at home.
The dough was rolled out very thinly, and because it was pan-fried with lard, it smelled incredibly delicious.
Gu Dalong almost bit his tongue as he ate, saying, "Little sister's cooking is really good. This pancake is even better than the ones our mother makes."
Gu Erhu didn't say anything, but he stuffed the pancake into his mouth and grabbed another one, as if he was afraid he couldn't out-snatch it from the other children.
Eating too fast can easily cause choking, and Gu Erhu soon started burping, which made Bao'er laugh foolishly.
After being glared at by Gu Erhu, the little girl hid in Gu An'an's arms again, "Your Majesty, Bao'er is scared."
Gu Erhu felt guilty for a moment, "You mean this child? I was just teasing her... uh, just teasing her, and she was scared... uh..."
Upon seeing this, Jiang Mingxu immediately clapped his hands, "Second Uncle has turned into a goose, goose, goose, goose, with its neck bent towards the sky singing."
Gu Erhu: "..." He wanted to beat this brat to death!
Gu Dalong, standing to the side, watched with amusement, "Third boy can even recite poems? Who taught you?"
Jiang Mingxu took a small bite of the biscuit. He didn't want to embarrass himself in front of outsiders and act like a grown-up.
After they finished eating, the little boy answered, "My older brother taught me."
Gu Dalong looked at his eldest nephew, who was quite good-looking. Although he was still a young boy, he was clearly a handsome man. It was true that the nephew resembled his uncle.
"Our eldest son isn't getting any younger, shouldn't we get him engaged?"
Gu An'an, who was eating, nearly choked to death.
If this were the 21st century, Jiang Mingyi wouldn't have even graduated from elementary school yet.
got engaged?
Order a shovel!
When this thought popped into her mind, Gu An'an felt uneasy.
Sure enough, an entrenching tool was shoved into his left hand.
They appear and disappear unpredictably and can't stand being talked about.
Luckily, no one saw it. Gu An'an secretly put the entrenching tool under the stool and said with a smile, "No rush. I'm thinking of having him take his younger siblings to school after the New Year."
"Studying is fine too. This child is clever and might be able to pass the imperial examinations and marry a merchant's daughter in the future."
Gu An'an: "..." No wonder so many rich young ladies in ancient times fell in love with stories about poor scholars.
Judging from Uncle Gu's attitude, you can tell that this market is incredibly vast.
"Mingyi is still young, there's no rush."
Jiang Mingyi's previously tense expression softened somewhat, and after a long while, he finally spoke, "I'll listen to Mother."
The way this was said made Gu An'an feel that the child was pretending to be weak while actually being strong.
She's a little bit cunning.
What do you mean by "listen to her"? This is basically pushing her out to compete with Uncle Gu.
But Uncle Gu was a talkative man. “It’s good that you’re filial, but your father is gone. How can your mother, a weak woman, shoulder the burden of the family? You need to take on the family’s responsibilities as soon as possible.”
Gu An'an smiled, and smiled again. If she didn't know that her uncle Gu meant well but did something wrong, she would have really wanted to kick him out.
“These children have suffered since they were young, all because they lost their father. Although I am a weak woman, I can still protect them, so don’t worry, brother.”
Gu Dalong sighed upon hearing this, then took a big bite of the pancake and ate it with even more relish.
After he finished eating the pancake in his hand, he looked at the plate and found that it was gone.
The others were eating with great enthusiasm, seemingly oblivious to everything.
Gu Erhu glanced at his elder brother: Ha, who told you to talk so much? No food left, serves you right!
Gu Erhu, who had originally planned to go home for lunch, felt full and energetic again after eating and drinking his fill. When he went to haul bricks in the afternoon, he suddenly remembered something and ran back to whisper to Gu An'an, "Your pancakes are pretty good. Make a few more so I can take them home for my parents to try."
Under the guise of being filial to his parents, Gu Erhu issued orders.
Gu An'an smiled and agreed, "Okay, thank you for your hard work, Second Brother."
Watching the two pull the cart away, Jiang Mingzhu carefully tugged at Gu An'an's arm, "We don't have much noodles left."
The girl spoke very subtly, but what she really meant was that Uncle Gu's behavior of taking food and goods was extremely vulgar. Besides, if she really wanted to take it back for her parents, why would she need to lower her voice and hide it from Uncle Gu?
It's clear they're trying to line their own pockets.
"Silly girl, do you think I can't tell?" Gu An'an poked the girl's cheek. It's not good if there's not much flesh. A little girl should have plenty of collagen.
"If I don't agree, will he work properly?" Gu An'an said as she walked home. "If you want the horse to run, you have to feed it grass, understand?"
Jiang Mingzhu seemed to understand but not quite, "What will you do if he asks you for something later?"
Gu An'an shrugged. "That'll require some brainpower. Use your clever little head to think about how we can protect our food supplies."
Should she just say no? Jiang Mingzhu felt that wouldn't work, since she had already agreed to it.
After thinking it over, the girl suddenly had a bright idea. "I'll have my brother beat up Mingxu and say that he stole the cakes you prepared for Grandpa and Grandma."
Jiang Mingyi: "..." A gentleman uses words, not fists.
Jiang Mingxu: "..." Is she my older sister? You don't feel bad hitting me?
The two brothers, who were reading, both shivered involuntarily, not understanding why they felt a chill down their backs.
Gu An'an was amused by this and said, "Great idea, let's do it that way. But you can tell those two guys about this method."
That's too mean, she doesn't want it.
The girl's smile froze. Had she dug herself a hole?
