Chapter 49 The Struggle for Status

"Even my mom couldn't coax him just now, how come he listens to Wanmei so much?" Gu Bei asked Lu Feng, turning his head to the side.

"When they first met, Tuanzi was very considerate and didn't cry. He used to only let his aunt and my mom hold him. He would cry whenever I held him."

"Ah, it seems Wanmei is really amazing. She's good at coaxing children and my parents. I lost favor as soon as I got home," Gu Bei said, shrugging.

Lu Feng chuckled, and Lin Xiaohai, as if sharing the same sentiment, immediately complained, "Yeah, yeah, I don't know what kind of spell my sister cast on my parents, but now they listen to her so much that they even leave the task of disciplining me to her."

Lin Wanwan came out of the kitchen and heard him accusing her. She smiled and replied, "Is disciplining you such an important thing? Even if you turn into a piece of mud, it won't affect us. At worst, my parents and I will disown you. If you still want to go out and be a scoundrel, I'll call my parents and tell them to pretend you don't exist."

Upon hearing her say that, Lin Xiaohai immediately smiled obsequiously, "No, sis, I haven't broken any laws recently."

Turning to Gu Bei, he asked, "Brother Gu Bei, when are you going back to Beijing?"

"I'll take you back with me at the beginning of next month, and we can visit Uncle Lin and Aunt He while we're there."

"Really? That's great! I've already talked to my sister. Tomorrow I'll train with Brother Wang Lin, and she'll buy me a tape recorder."

Gu Changfeng looked at him and said with a smile, "The training is very tough, can you handle it?"

Before Lin Xiaohai could speak, Gu Bei said in a strange tone, "My dad, you didn't treat me like this before. It's true what they say, there's no harm without comparison."

Gu Changfeng glanced at him sideways and said to Lin Xiaohai in a friendly tone, "Training is fine, but you have to be careful and avoid getting injured."

Lin Xiaohai stood up and saluted him. "Yes, sir. I will be careful."

Gu Changfeng chuckled and said, "The military salute is quite standard."

"You and my mom are really two different people. Aren't you afraid of hurting me by treating me like this?"

Xu Zhang came out and said, "That's perfect. You always said when you were little that your Aunt He was gentler and better than me. You go be Aunt He's son, and I'll just keep Wanwan."

“You said it yourself, I’ll go back to Beijing and recognize Aunt He as my mother.”

"Go to hell, Wanwan is already my daughter."

After chatting with Gu Bei for a while, Lu Feng realized that Gu Bei wasn't so bad after all. He was a person with ideals and ambitions, and they even shared some of the same views.

The two chatted happily, and Lin Xiaohai went to the kitchen to help. His sister had injured her hand, and he had to go and help her.

During the meal, Gu Changfeng was very happy. "Today, our whole family is finally here. We're just missing your parents. When we have the chance, let's go back to Beijing together for a meal. Lu Feng, bring your mother too, and we'll all have a good meal together as a family."

Lu Feng nodded, "Okay, I'll treat you then."

Gu Changfeng said with a smile, "It's your turn to host. You're our only son-in-law. Our precious daughter has married you, so you should treat us to a meal."

Xu Zhang served Lin Wanwan a bowl of soup. "Eat quickly. Wanwan got injured today while saving me. She needs to recover properly."

"Didn't we say we're family? Why are you being so polite? Are you treating me like an outsider?"

Xu Zhang kept putting food on her plate, saying, "I'll find someone to buy you a pigeon tomorrow to help you recover. Come here for lunch tomorrow too."

"Mom, please stop putting food on my plate. I can't eat it all. You should be more considerate of my brother Gu Bei. He'll get jealous soon."

"Hey, thanks to my sister for remembering me."

The family finished their meal chatting and laughing. Sitting on the sofa, Xu Zhangcai asked her, "How was work today? You're injured, are you going tomorrow?"

"Go ahead, I've only worked one day, it's not good to take leave now. It's just a left hand injury, it's fine. I've been writing the articles of association these past few days, it won't affect anything, and I usually don't have much to do."

"Where do you work?" Gu Bei asked.

"I'm temporarily working at the Women's Federation. Today is my first day at work. Xiao Hongjun and his three family members came to cause trouble again. I came up with a bad idea, but I hope it'll be okay."

"What's going on? Are they causing you trouble again?" Xu Zhang asked, frowning.

Lin Wanwan recounted what happened that afternoon, saying, "Will there be any problems if I say this? Will they come after me if their family gets into a fight?"

Xu Zhang remained silent with a strange expression, while Gu Bei smiled and said, "What do you call this? Going against the grain?"

"I just feel that she won't listen to anything I say. I really don't know how to describe her. There's always a reason why someone is pitiful. I'll just say whatever she wants to hear. Anyway, it's always someone else's fault, and I'm not at all wrong. If she listens to me, maybe her tantrums at home can change the situation."

Lu Feng put his arm around her and patted her back reassuringly.

Lin Wanwan looked up at him with a smile, "You won't hit me, will you? I'll go crazy too."

"Ask around here, who would dare to hit you?" Lin Xiaohai looked at her strangely.

Lu Feng chuckled, "I'm too busy spoiling you to bear hitting you."

“It’s alright, it’s her own business. She can’t figure things out herself, and no one can help her. Just ignore her and send her away,” Xu Zhang said, frowning.

"It would be better if we could mediate, but for someone as stubborn as her, we should just get rid of her," Gu Changfeng said, worried that she might suffer a loss.

Lin Wanwan laughed and fell onto Lu Feng, "I thought Uncle Gu was going to scold me and tell me to do my job properly."

"When my dad met you, he had no principles left."

Gu Changfeng scolded him with a stern face, "Stop talking nonsense. Your sister was injured today, didn't you even say anything?"

"I want to express my appreciation. I brought back a gift, but I didn't have a chance to give it to you."

Gu Bei went back to his room and took out four bags. "One for each of you. They have your names on them. Lu Feng and Tuanzi were going to test you out, but since you've been nice to my sister, we're giving them to you. If you ever bully my sister again, our whole family will never let you get away with it."

Lin Xiaohai opened the bag and chimed in, "That's right, that's right. If you dare to bully my sister, you're finished."

Lu Feng sat up straight and looked at him very seriously, saying, "I will treat Wanwan well. I, Lu Feng, mean what I say. She is the only one for me in this life."

"Ugh, so cheesy!" Lin Xiaohai rubbed his arms.

Xu Zhang and Gu Changfeng both laughed, and Gu Bei also smiled and said, "Talk is useless, we'll only see what you do."

Lin Wanwan opened the bag and saw a very beautiful pearl necklace. Each pearl was round and shiny. "It's very beautiful. Thank you, brother."

"You calling me 'brother' really touched my heart. It seems that gifts do work."

"I'm just afraid you'll think I'm too familiar. If we get to know each other a bit before I call you that, it won't be so awkward."
