Chapter 19 Buying a House

After Song Jin came out, he was planning to go directly to the captain's house, but then he thought it was probably dinner time, so he returned to the dormitory.

I went in and sorted out the things I brought with me, took out half a pound of brown sugar, two packs of cigarettes, and put a handful of White Rabbit milk candies in my pocket.

Then he sat on the only chair in the room, took out the bread from the space and started eating, three pieces of whole wheat bread and two packs of milk.

Look at the time, it’s one o’clock.

She walked out of the door with the things she had just taken out. The people in the living room saw her go out, but they couldn't see clearly what she was holding in her hand. Some people started to grumble again.

Song Jin turned a deaf ear and walked out the door directly. Only after he left the door did he realize that he didn't know which way to go.

From a distance, I saw a ditch under the tree on the right, where a few children were playing in the water.

Song Jin grabbed one of the children, a White Rabbit candy in his hand, and looked at the ragged child in front of him and said, "Little boy, do you know where the captain's home is? If you take me there, I'll give you this candy."

The child in front of him gulped and said, "I, I know. I'll take you there, but you have to give me the candy first."

Song Jin put the candy directly in his hand, watched him put the candy into his pocket like a treasure, and even pressed the pocket.

He walked forward and asked Song Jin to follow him, keeping one hand on his pocket all the way.

Song Jin looked both cute and sad.

After walking for about 10 minutes, the child pointed to a large blue brick and tile house not far away and said, "That's the captain's house. Can I go now?"

Song Jin nodded, and he ran away.

Doors are rarely closed in rural areas. The main gate was open, but there was no one in the yard and it was very quiet. Song Jin was probably taking a lunch break, but there was nothing she could do. She had nowhere to go, so she had to disturb him.

I knocked on the door and then stood in the yard and asked, "Is the captain here?"

There was a noise coming from a room on the left, and a moment later a person who had just been seen came out, Chen Liang.

"Hello, Comrade Chen. Sorry to bother you. I have something to ask the captain."

Seeing that Song Jin was holding something in her hand, Chen Liang guessed that she needed help with something, so he asked her to wait for a moment and then went into the room on the left side facing the gate.

After a while, the captain came out in slippers and invited Song Jin into the middle hall, and Chen Liang followed behind.

Song Jin put his things on the table and spoke directly: "Uncle Captain, this is what I want to ask if there is any vacant house in our team. I want to buy it and live there myself. I think since I'm already here, I may stay here for a long time in the future. Having my own house will make me feel more at home."

The team leader was not too surprised. There were many educated youth with good conditions among them. Some of them wanted to live outside, and most of them lived with villagers. However, the girl was the first one to propose it.

"Are you sure you want to buy a house? There are vacant houses, but they're a bit expensive. There are a few families in the village who have vacant houses. You could rent one, and it wouldn't cost too much, and it would be convenient to live with the villagers."

Song Jin had seen many cases of girls getting into trouble while living in villagers' homes, so he had never considered this.

I directly refused the captain: "I've made up my mind, Captain, just buy it. My parents are gone now, and I may stay in our village for a long time in the future. It's better to have my own home."

Hearing this, Chen Liang secretly raised his eyelids to glance at her, then said to the team leader: "Dad, let Song Zhiqing live in my second grandfather's house. It's right next to our house, so you don't have to worry about safety issues. The house was only renovated two years ago and is very new. It's just right for Song Zhiqing to live alone."

The captain pondered for a moment and stood up. "Come on, Song Zhiqing, I'll show you around. This is the house of an elder in our clan. Last year, his grandson got a promotion in the city and took him away. He asked us to look after the house and sell it if we find the right one."

The house was indeed very close to the village chief's house, so close that you could just turn right when you went out.

It was also a brick and tile house, but with only two main rooms, and the layout was somewhat similar to that of a youth educated youth settlement. To the left was a private plot of land, abandoned, and in the corner was a toilet.

On the right was a kitchen and a utility room. A shed was built in the corner adjacent to the main door, with a few scattered sticks on it, probably a place to store firewood.

The yard was a dirt one, but it could be renovated later. Song Jin was quite satisfied; after all, it was still a brick and tile house. The most unexpected thing was that there was a well in front of the vegetable patch, a pressurized well. This was the biggest surprise. No more going to the village to fetch water, and I could wash clothes right at home. The pressurized well device looked crude, but it should work.

"Uncle Captain, this is it. How much do you think it will cost?"

Seeing her straightforwardness, the captain didn't say much. "Just give me two hundred yuan. It's our own house. We'll be close by in the future. If you need any help, just ask."

"But the kitchen stove needs to be rebuilt, and the courtyard wall needs to be repaired. I'll find people to do these for you. Just give each person a dollar as a labor fee."

Song Jin nodded repeatedly, no problem.

Then I asked where I could buy simple furniture. There was a carpenter in the village, and I could go to his house to choose. If he didn’t have it, I could make it custom-made.

While she was asking the question, Chen Liang had already brought a wooden basin and a rag, as well as two brooms, one large and one small, from his home.

The captain looked at his son holding a basin and a broom in his arm, and he began to doubt his eyes.
