Chapter 90 End of the Year

Song Jin and his companions waited until it was almost dark before coming out of the police station yard.

The public security comrades are very busy today.

Nine men and one woman were searching the mountain for the "disappeared ones", and Chen Bingkun was also missing.

Those who help abducted children find their families and those who accompany children to the hospital for medical treatment.

There are still those who remain at the police station for questioning...

After recording their statements, the few people did not stay any longer and set off on the road back to the brigade.

On the way, Chen Liang asked about people's well-being, and the people following him couldn't bear to watch.

But I am also very envious of such a beautiful and capable person. I guess Liang Ge’s ancestors must be very happy.

I'm going to go back and light something on fire at my ancestral grave. I wonder if it will produce smoke.

After returning home, Chen Liang forced his mother to go into Song Jin's room and check her thoroughly. He made sure that she was not injured before letting his mother go.

Aunt Chen...

She is truly blessed to have this son...

Afterwards, Aunt Chen and Aunt Hua came together and talked about the preparations for the New Year.

Celebrating the Chinese New Year nowadays is really simple. Almost no preparation is required, or it can be said that no preparation is necessary.

Originally, the factory did not have a Spring Festival holiday this time. However, Director Lin overcame all objections and applied to the higher authorities on the grounds that the factory had developed a new type of machinery. In the end, he secured these seven days for everyone by rewarding them with holidays.

Because of his current special status, Song Jin was favored by Director Lin and left the factory earlier than others.

During this time of the Spring Festival, other workers have almost no holidays and are not allowed to celebrate the Spring Festival.

Song Jin happened to have some knowledge of this history:

At the beginning of the founding of New China, the people carried out a variety of Spring Festival activities, such as launching the Spring Festival campaign to support the army and their families, doing everything possible to ensure market supply, and launching a variety of cultural and artistic activities that were popular among the people.

Famous artists such as Mei Lanfang and Zhou Xinfang actively responded to the call and participated in the local opera and folk art Spring Festival singing competition held in Shanghai.

It is worth mentioning that before the Spring Festival in 1950, the movie "My Life", adapted from Lao She's novel of the same name, was released.

This film, directed by and starring Shi Hui, shows the vicissitudes of Beijing over the past 50 years and fits the atmosphere of getting rid of the old and welcoming the new. It was the best-selling film released during the Spring Festival in 1950 and can be called the earliest "New Year's film" in New China.

However, in 1967, the Spring Festival, as a part of traditional culture, became the target of revolution.

On January 25, the fifteenth day of the twelfth lunar month, when the Spring Festival was approaching, Shanghai's Liberation Daily published a letter from a reader.

The letter was written by Zhang Renxing, a worker at the Shanghai Glass Machinery Factory. He first proposed the "stay home for Spring Festival" initiative and commented, "Spring Festival is nothing! Our grandest festival has arrived!"

On January 29, the People's Daily responded to the demands of the general public and issued a notice to "break old customs and not take holidays during the Spring Festival." At the same time, it suspended family leave and would make it up later.

Just like that, the Spring Festival, which was originally a legal holiday, was suddenly cancelled, and major railway stations and bus stations used radio to broadcast notices that there would be no Spring Festival holiday.

Many people who had bought train and bus tickets to go home for the New Year went to the ticket office to refund their tickets and returned to work after hearing this notice.

In the more than ten years since then, not having a holiday during the Spring Festival has become the norm.

Every time the Spring Festival comes, whether they are government officials, factory workers, or waiters in shops, supply and marketing cooperatives, and restaurants, they all do not take holidays or go home, but actively participate in production labor.

Winter is the slack season for farming, but farmers still have to work, turning the idle time into the busy time.

Since there is no holiday during the Spring Festival, the New Year customs that have been passed down for thousands of years have naturally been cancelled.

Folk activities such as setting off firecrackers, worshiping ancestors, lion and dragon dances, and buying New Year's goods have disappeared since the Spring Festival.

Drinking and playing cards were even banned as bad habits. The only traditional custom that survived was "sticking up Spring Festival couplets."

Even the practice of "posting Spring Festival couplets" is very different from before.

In the past, Spring Festival couplets would read "Green bamboos mark one-third of the scenery, red plum blossoms herald the arrival of spring in thousands of homes."

Contents such as "May wealth come to you every day, and blessings and luck come with spring every year" express good wishes.

In the 1960s and 1970s, the content of Spring Festival couplets was all battle slogans such as "Don't stop the fight on the 30th, continue working on the 1st."

The most common activity for a family at this time is to eat "bitterness-recalling and sweetness-mind-mind-eating rice".

In the modern times when Song Jin lives, people born in the 80s and 90s basically don’t know what “remembering the bitterness and thinking of the sweetness” means.

There are two kinds of "bitter recalling bitterness and thinking of sweetness rice". One is porridge made with rotten vegetable leaves, taro flowers, pumpkin flowers, radish leaves, wild vegetables, rice bran and dried sweet potatoes.

One type is steamed cornbread made from cornmeal, dried sweet potatoes, sweet potato flour, bran, etc.

The biggest characteristic of these two foods is that they are difficult to swallow.

This is exactly what the organizers hope to achieve: they hope that by tasting the common foods of the old society, everyone will remember the "evil old society" and love the new society.

This kind of days lasted for 12 years.

It was not until the Spring Festival of 1979 that signs of loosening appeared.

On January 17, 1979, the People's Daily published two more letters from readers, both of which proposed reinstating the Spring Festival holiday.

The two articles are "Why there is no holiday during the Spring Festival" and "Let farmers have a 'stable year'".

The author of the former article is Liang Yande, a worker at the material warehouse of Jinhe Forestry Bureau in Heilongjiang Province, and the author of the latter article is Guo Decai, a farmer from the communications group of Licun Commune in Huanghua County, Hebei Province.

Liang Yande said in his article "Why No Holidays During the Spring Festival": "The frontline workers in our forestry area do not take Sundays off. They only have a few days off a year, so they should be able to enjoy this holiday well.

If you force it, it may seem that you have to work for a few days, but in fact, the work and rest you have to do will squeeze out other production time.

The gains and losses are the same, and the war of attrition of the superior's will is actually difficult to produce results.

Workers are happy about the Spring Festival holiday and are even more motivated to achieve the four modernizations."

Guo Decai wrote in "Let Farmers Have a 'Stable Year'": "In the past few years, the closer it got to the Spring Festival, the more contentious things became. As soon as the Spring Festival was approaching, the superiors would 'emphasize' and 'demand' that we celebrate a revolutionary Spring Festival... This made the people restless.

Farmers take a break and rest during the Spring Festival. Honestly, if we don't give them a holiday, and if we use fatigue tactics, people won't have a good time, won't be happy, and won't be able to work hard.

These two letters had an immediate effect.

A few days later, some provinces began to announce the resumption of the Spring Festival holiday.

By 1980, my country had fully restored the Spring Festival holiday system.

The long-awaited Spring Festival has finally returned to the general public.

It was only the end of 1973, and she was able to enjoy the Spring Festival holiday thanks to Director Lin's open-mindedness and ability to take responsibility.

Director Lin: ...No, I have the confidence to give the workers a holiday because you do a good job. This is not the Spring Festival, it is not the Spring Festival, it is just a long holiday.
