Chapter 2 Liu, the First Wife

The Yun family had three branches. After Grandfather Yun passed away, the family divided. The second branch moved to the county town early on, leaving the eldest and third branches to live next to each other.

Everyone in the village said that Yun Dalang was lucky. He married Liu and had three sons who were pillars of the family. After they grew up, they each married and had several grandsons. The family was very lively and prosperous.

As for the third wife, Pan, she only gave birth to one son and two daughters. After the son grew up, he married Zhang and had two granddaughters. The house was full of money-losing goods, and they would have plenty to cry about in the future.

"Oh, Ling'er is awake! Thank goodness, Bodhisattva, you haven't missed the day you were supposed to move to the county town."

The speaker was Liu, but Yunling ignored her and continued to shovel the mushroom porridge in her bowl.

Yun Chu called out, "Grandma."

Zhang stood up and smiled, "Auntie, you're here. We've discussed it, and we won't move to the county town for now."

Liu's smile froze, and she anxiously moved closer to Zhang, "Why aren't you moving again?"

"The constables in the county town are still searching for the human traffickers' hideout. It's not very safe in the town, and we'll have to find a new place to live, so we won't go for now."

Liu rolled her eyes inwardly. What safety? These money-losing things are gone, but they're being treated like precious gold nuggets.

Liu took Zhang's hand, pretending to be concerned for her, "What about Shenghua? Aren't you going to take care of him? Goodness, he runs between the county and the village every day, he's gotten so thin. He's your man, you have to cherish him and take care of him, so that others won't gossip about him."

"Let others say what they want, it doesn't bother me, why bother taking it to heart?"

Liu felt as if she had punched cotton at Zhang's words; they were unsatisfying. She had no choice but to try to persuade him in another direction:

"What about you? Weren't you thinking of setting up a food stall in the city? With your skills, making money won't be difficult. You might even become a cook, and your whole family can enjoy a comfortable life."

Zhang knew exactly what the person in front of her was up to, but as an elder, she couldn't very well sweep her away with a broom, so tears streamed down her face.

“I know what Auntie is saying, but Chu’er and Ling’er are two pieces of my flesh. I can’t lose them again. As long as they are alive, we can make money. There’s no rush.”

What's the rush!

The villagers all said she was lucky, having given birth to three good sons, who then married and had grandsons. No one in the village could compare to her, and Liu thought so too, often taking pride in it.

But now that his grandson is grown up, where can the house hide so many people?

Every day, the first thing we do when we open our eyes is eat. We only have about ten acres of land, and there are more than a dozen mouths to feed in our family. Where are we going to get enough food to eat?

The original plan was that if the third branch of the family moved to the county town, the first branch could then rightfully cultivate their land, and everyone could have more food to eat.

And their house, she'll just have to tell the village chief and buy the passageway between the two houses, then open it all up, and her precious grandson will have a place to live.

But now Zhang says she won't move, how can she agree to that?

Liu glared at Yunling secretly. It was all that damned woman's fault. She was just looking at the lanterns, but she still managed to get separated from them and be kidnapped. What a debtor!

Seeing Zhang's attitude, Liu disregarded everything else and only wanted to use her elder's authority to suppress her. Her face turned cold.

“Shenghua’s wife, don’t blame your aunt for scolding you. As a daughter-in-law of the Yun family, you can’t just think about yourself. It’s one thing if you can’t give birth to a son, but what about Shenghua…”

Before he could finish speaking, a loud noise came from the next room, and a low stool with a broken leg was thrown out.

"Some old things just need to be dealt with."

Yun Ruochun came out of the house, casually picked up a broken foot, looked at Liu Shi at this end, and exclaimed in surprise, "Oh, Auntie is here."

When Liu saw her, she felt a chill run down her spine. Her eldest niece was naturally strong but lacked any sense of romance. She was like a rough and uncouth man, and she had broken the perfectly good stool into pieces. No wonder no man in the village wanted her.

Although Liu was dissatisfied, she didn't say anything, but just nodded at her.

Yun Ruochun walked over and said happily, "My sister-in-law hasn't slept a wink these days, taking care of Ling-jie. If you have any questions or anything you want to say, Aunt, I'll go find my mother and let you get the answers."

"No need, I just came to see Ling'er. That child is really something, but thankfully she's awake."

"That's right. If it weren't for your beloved grandson dragging Ling'er to buy candy, she wouldn't have been kidnapped. That grandson of yours is really something. But thankfully, Ling'er is back."

Liu was so angry at Yun Ruochun's sarcastic remarks that her mouth twisted in anger. If Zhang hadn't been so easy to bully, she wouldn't have come to their door. The mouths of these three families were all incredibly sharp.

After Liu left, the family closed the door and reenacted Liu's anger, laughing incessantly. Liu, who was on the road, heard their laughter, and in her anger, she didn't watch her step and tripped and fell flat on her face. She was furious!

Yunling rested in bed for a few more days. There was no other reason than that her current body could not withstand wood-type supernatural abilities, and she needed to adapt slowly.

In the past few days, she has also seen the rest of her family—her father, her grandmother, her father-in-law, and her second sister-in-law—and they are all very kind and genuinely care about her.

Especially her grandmother, Yunling, was afraid that she would develop a chronic illness, so she would go to the fairy godmother every day to ask for a bowl of talisman water. Yunling couldn't refuse, so she had to accept it and secretly pour it out after Yunling left.

As the weather warms up, the villagers begin to prepare the land and cultivate the fields. Old Man Yun takes a bag of seeds out of the house, pours them onto a winnowing basket, and bends down to carefully select them.

Yunling squatted down beside him, picked up a seed, and saw the seed flash with a bright light before becoming plump. She quickly tried two more seeds, and they were all the same.

Yunling was overjoyed. This must be a wood-type ability, and the fact that she didn't feel dizzy this time meant that her body had fully adapted.

"Grandpa, play with me."

"Get out of here, you silly boy. If you mess up the farming and cause a food shortage, we'll just take it out of your mouth."

"No, no."

Taking the opportunity, Yunling sorted through all the seeds in the winnowing basket. Old Man Yun was both amused and exasperated, so he picked Yunling up and held her high in the air for a while before putting her down.

"Alright, you silly boy, go play with your older sister."

Old Man Yun picked out the seeds again and saw that each one was plump. He quickly rubbed his eyes and then widened them to see clearly. He realized that he must have been seeing things. He chuckled and slapped his thigh as he took the seeds to soak.

Yunling ran excitedly around the yard. The vegetables she touched became lush and tempting, and the trees she hugged became even thicker, with new buds sprouting from their branches.

Of course, she wasn't satisfied with that. She wanted to go up the mountain. Zhang disagreed, but she couldn't resist Zhang's persistent pleading. In the end, she had no choice but to let Yun Ruochun, who had just returned from tilling the fields, accompany her.
